How do you guys feel about people copying your custom themes/chip names/designs/etc? (3 Viewers)

Chipping up some, not first break yet

Things not looking good for the home team. Flopped set of 7’s but couldn’t shake the straight draw

Second break. Still 12 in, 13 started. Blinds 1000/2000 after break.

Moving Day is coming soon

I’ve asked folks for font info, color details, and inlay .ai files and everyone’s been awesome. I’ve considered, leveraged, and incorporated ideas and concepts from customs, casino chips, and other works of art shared. That’s the beauty of this forum- helping inspire folks to design and build better stuff for a more enjoyable game, and there’s a TON of great material here.

And yes, I’ve operated both ways on that. Folks have asked about design elements and I’ve been glad to share. Someone saw my topper and asked if they could design something similar. I said go for it! (And it looks great.)

I know some folks don’t share… some things we keep to ourselves; that’s totally cool as well.

I have given permission to anyone who wants to use my Casino Royale art for chips or plaques, but they come with conditions.

It is impossible to argue copyright here, so I won't bother. If you want to replicate someone else's designs, then be a reasonable person and ask permission or talk about some parameters.

Better yet, come up with something at least semi-original yourself.

How about this:

I saw a relabel set recently and the labels look just like vintage labels just remade. I messaged the person who posted if I can use his label design, but they’re not very active. Since the labels are actually from an original casino design, do I need this person’s permission to make similar labels?

I recently had some bounty plaques made. I had a pretty good idea what I wanted, so I did a Google image search for some of the elements of what I had in mind. A picture pops up and it's dead on what I wanted to do. I attempted to contact the guy who had them made to see if he was cool with me making my version of them for my home game use. Never heard back from him, so at some point I just decided to proceed. They are not identical, but very similar. Again, had I designed them from scratch it would have been pretty close based on what I already had in mind. But if you put them side by side I'm sure people would consider mine a ripoff of his.

I would have rather had his OK, but again he never got back to me. I don't feel like I'm being an asshole because I'm not selling them or otherwise trying to make a buck off of them. I won't post them here or anywhere else, I don't want to step on anyone's toes. They aren't going to pop up in any poker magazines, and outside of the guys who play in my home game pretty much nobody will ever see them.

Ah shit missed your PM too, go ahead no sweat.

That looks like the CA flag bear and some standard font. Don’t see why not, that bear isn’t original art.
Yeah these are replica California card room labels. But I’m asking if I need permission to replicate replicas

My personal opinion is that you need permission from the original artwork owner/artist, not from the replicator.

You don't know if the replicator gained permission or not, and either way, it's unrelated to your issue.

So in my case. I should be free to make these right

The old Vegas California Club has a different bear and design. The core art here is from the California flag, so…
