Anyone has any idea at all about how big is the home market for high quality($1+/chip) poker chips.

So something around a few hundred thousand dollars?

Home chip market is there, absent a decent manufacturor for premium chips.

Micro, micro, micro. I believe it’s limited to the folks on this forum. You won’t even find enthusiasts on a Reddit, which says a lot.

Hence the guys with big stockpiles should have an interest in preserving the community and fostering it.

That completely depends on the chips themselves. High quality TRKs at their justifiably premium prices have a fairly small market (probably fewer than 100 buyers). Casino used Paulson RHC chips for ~$1 ea have a market that swallowed up about $500k worth of chips in a few months. However, if mint Paulson THC chips were available to all for ~$1.25 ea, it would probably sell $1 million worth of chips in one week.

Thanks! Very interesting. Is it a personal estimate or you got the numbers from somewhere?

This thread needs some pictures

LOL, no. Way too low. Some personal collections are worth that much.

Total value of chips in the current market is in the millions.

Not large enough to generate a 12 step program for chip addicts anonymous. Although my wife wants me to attend such a meeting.
My wife is an enabler. She's always telling me to buy more chips when I show her pics of ones I want. She still can't believe I didn't pull the trigger on these S&Ks lol.

Mostly curiosity.

What else besides curiousity? Are you seeking proof of concept/market size before jumping in to the high quality (+$1/chip) market?

I don't think the question is well-defined, and without knowing what information you seek, providing an intelligent answer is almost impossible.

Candidly, even with your purpose in mind, the answer is elusive, but at least we could get in a ballpark...

BTW, that is the emoji for 'watching.'. I think @ReallyGoodUsername is saying he's watching the post and responses with interest.

This might help although I'm not sure it will entirely answer your question...

Last summer I did some research on eBay. Here were the highlights:

Sold eBay listings containing the keyword 'poker chip set' (851 total) (included small quantity purchases):
  • 602 were under $50; 356 were 'new' and majority included a case.
  • 30 transactions between $200 and $300 in last 30 days
  • 100 transactions between $100 and $200 in last 30 days
  • 106 transactions between $50 and $100 in last 30 days
  • 10 transactions between $300 and $500 in last 30 days
  • 17 transactions over $500 in last 30 days
82% of the transactions were under $100. What this tells me is that while poker's popularity is strong, the poker chip market is primarily comprised of consumers who don't want to spend a lot of money on their equipment.

Obviously, eBay isn't the only source of information, but the best selling products on Amazon are also similar in price point. You could also take this further by analyzing more keywords.

Are we discussing the size of the 'new' premium chip market? The challenge with this question is that the numbers are skewed by the secondary markets. For example, the old Paulson Classics retailed for around $1-$1.20 a chip when they were new - but now these same chips are selling in forums and on eBay for 100%+ premiums. So prices on some products are severely inflated due to scarcity - but that doesn't mean that the size of the market in terms of participants has grown.

We call them "meetups", and various members host support-group sessions multiple times each year at various locations around the world. At least that's what I think these gathering are for. There is a nominal participation fee involved, which is typically dependent on your level of poker acumen. :D:LOL: :sneaky:

Does she have a sister?

I’d be curious to know if, whatever month you used, is indicative of sales throughout the year. In general, I believe online sales drop some in summer months. So, I would guess the number is at least not inflated.

So, by my conservative estimate, you’re looking at over $800,000 per year on eBay alone, maybe more, and 20 percent of the dollars spent (at least) are on sales of $300 or more.

I don’t know what that necessarily means, but it seems like, overall, there is some significant cash thrown around at all levels of sale.

This is the key point... As both the commodity supply and the ease of purchasing shrinks, the market shrinks with it, down to the most dedicated, well-funded and fantatical core of the potential market.

When Sriracha sauce was produced in small batches and hard to find, very few people knew about Sriracha, and even those who knew about it used it sparingly, as it was a pain to purchase. Now it’s in almost every supermarket in my rural area.

If high quality poker chips were still readily available at ~$1/chip, and you didn’t have to lurk on forums and eBay and Craigslist to find the colors or denominations you wanted, that would expand the market enormously, I think. Likewise if you had companies actively promoting and marketing top-quality chips.

Instead this has become an extremely niche market, where self-motivated individuals have to work hard to build sets... while the few retailers who carry “high-end” sets pawn off dice chips in mahogany boxes wit paper cards to consumers with no clue.
