When you host a game, does it impact how you feel about your chip collection, in that it makes you want to own more or fewer chips than you do?

Every single time I host...it makes me want to sell most of my chips. That's weird, right?

For me it's not that it was a bad experience...quite the opposite. It's such a great experience, I think, "why do I need all of these chips...tonight was a f*cking blast and these chips were perfect.". I guess if I hosted more often, lots of sets would make sense -- variety. But I host only once/month at most (and before this year, more like once/year!). I dunno, hosting just makes me reflect on it, I guess, and really appreciate the chips.

You need moaaaarrrr

Especially matsuis

I host every Friday with the same set lol.... why because the players I have don’t have the same appreciation for chips like we do!!! If I played in games where there’s multiple PCF members like how I see in all these meet ups I’d want more and more and more

If I hosted I’d probably want less.

Right now it’s 4 different locations and I want to put one set in each location then once in awhile swap in a set to take one back to clean. That’s why I’ve been gobbling up sets.

Ever since nice chips arrived we play a lot more often too, which is a plus (I think?). A bunch of degens with full time jobs playing 3x a week.

I wish I had more, but I also have local PCF friends with great sets, and I’ve asked them to bring them whenever they want. New set in play at my next game, which is awesome.

Mel, I tried but cannot put myself in your shoes and come up with the same result. Are you sure you're OK? The more you host, the fewer chips you think you should own? This does not compute!

I think I understand. I often ask myself if I have a complete AS cash and tournament set (which is all I will ever need) why am I building X set, or why is Y set sitting on a shelf. Neither of these sets are as nice as the AS set anyway, at least to me. The players who do care about chips when I host may even express a little disappointment about the set I choose to put in play on a given night, maybe it’s a Chipco cash set. The players who don’t care about chips, well they don’t care. So more and more lately I have thought about cleaning house a bit and getting rid of chips I don’t REALLY want to put in play anyway.

I agree Mel. I often think of this. I have 5, soon to be six high end sets. Even within the six sets I have my favorites. When I put something else into play other than a favorite set then I'm wondering why I did that lol.

Your worse set that I have ever played with at your house is way better than a lot of other peoples chips lol I don't love the bud jones? chips that you have. Mainly because shuffling them is such a pain in the ass.

I just found out that my wife is leaving for the weekend of June 1st. I'm thinking of trying to host a small cash game that night. I know it will be difficult with you and boother playing golf, and with the league game on SAT. Its not often that I have the house to myself. I'm thinking, this would be a good time to get the Mardi Gras chips into play. Then I think, wait, those hot stamped TRK's are awesome. Or the Poseidons really need to hit the felt, lol. Damn first world chipper problems :)

To me collecting chips and hosting are closely related to each other. I was a CT member but stopped hosting (and playing in general) for some years. My three sets just sat in a shelf but I knew I wanted to keep them.
About six months ago I revived my old group of players and we have been playing monthly since then. At the same time I began to watch this forum again - and started buying more chips.
I just can't help - when I'm involved in hosting and playing on a regular base I want to get more chips because there are so many nice sets out there. ;)
But my collection is not that big, so there might come a point of "saturation" at which I feel the same as you...

I don’t host regularly, but I want to and aspire to do so. In the meantime, I have more sets than I “need,” and some of them are larger than I’ll ever likely need (which in reality makes the other sets superfluous). But I’m a collector and aficionado, and I appreciate each set for what it is (and most of my sets have significant historical relevance). So, while I don’t feel the need for additional sets, I also have trouble trying to decide if I should pare down my collection (currently at 11 sets). Maybe I’ll auction them off to @GIANTDustyCrab....

Variety is the spice of life.

When I host twice a month or so I like having lots of sets to rotate through. When I go through stretches of only having a game every 6 weeks I feel like I have too many sets and want to use the same 1 or 2 sets then.

This!

For me it's actually a little of both. I really enjoy having multiple sets and getting them each into play, but that wasn't always the case.

I mainly host 2 different groups, a monthly tourney ("my game") and a micro stakes cash game that I share hosting duties with 1-2 others. For my tourneys, it took me a while to build, but once I built up my PNY set sufficiently, I was very happy with using only that set for that game. We've played with that set for several years - very few in the group were chippers, but most appreciated the fact they were playing with really nice chips. This was also during the "downtime" in premium chipping ~8 years ago, where very few new set options were coming up (especially for tourney sets) and ASM was in the throws of the vegas era. With a "grail" set already in hand and nothing new popping up that I really liked, I was very content with using just this set.

For the cash game - entirely different group. These guys love the bright & colorful options, and enjoy the rotation through different sets. They typically prefer ceramics over clays. So I've picked up several different sets over the years based on the group's preferences that we rotate through for this game - American beauties, crystal oysters, boardwalks, black sands, and eventually a starburst/mixed $1s set. Nothing on the super premium end, and the group enjoys putting each set into play.

Once CPC arose from the ashes of ASM vegas and PCF helped re-spawn the chipping market, I started looking for opportunities for additional tourney sets to add to the PNY only tourney rotation. It took particular opportunities / sets to break in (CPC Rounders and the super cool dia de los muertos design), but now I have 5 sets available for that game as well.

This is similar to buying 2 video games at the same time. You're always going to favor one game over the other and one will get significantly more playtime than the other.

Right now I'm in that boat. Got the Matsuis and just love playing with them so I'm not sure if or when I'd ever get my other set in play so I'm considering selling.

It’s like I don’t even know you anymore, Mel.

uhhh yeah...

No...you do. I played my Nevada Lodge upper denoms tonight for the first time. It was love confirmed. It made me think..."why the hell do I have all these Paulsons?" You know me, @gopherblue ! :p

Mel checks list (TRK, Paulson, CPC, wait for it...

And yet you’re buying a Matsui set....  :ROFLMAO:;)

I'm not even surprised a bit.

Schrödinger's Chipper. The only explanation...

I like to have a different set for each of my blind structures. In my mind, it allows the players, at a glance to identify which structure we will be using that night. I also have 4x6 cards that have the structure printed on them, but differing chips is another reminder - like playing in a different casino. Same game, but sometimes it will play differently.

But Mel, if you ever feel that way again, host a meet-up. 20-30 people, each with a pile of cash and a love of chips. And you won't have to worry about shipping!

Honestly. Hosting is the reason I have so many sets. I'd have a hard time keeping 11 sets and never using them. The joy I get is my players enjoying the different chips and seeing them get into the pot.

Which is why I have two different sized Pelicans.

Nope. I love chips. Moar chipes is better. Hosting (or others hosting) gives me an opportunity to play with them. More hosting means more opportunities.

Weird, indeed. If you're looking for buyers, see above. :)

I guess what I mean is that I love chips too, and between games, it's all about the chips. I love them, I want them all. More more more.
But when actually sitting at the table, hosting an event, it switches to enjoyment of the experience, loving the chips on the table, and I just get a weird feeling come over me, like "this is what it's all about...and you don't need 20 chip sets to achieve this".

Then the next day comes, friends have gone home, and it's back to all being about the chips. :)
