I've been on this site since October, slowly buying small sample sets here and there, trying to get a feel for things. I've been hesitant to declare that I'm working on a specific project for fear of being restricted to that project alone. I didn't want to commit, because I'm also thinking about a CPC set, maybe space-themed, and I'd also like to do a hotstamped tourney set, and those starbursts are really cool, and man, I really like those Bud Jones V7s, maybe I should get some of those, and and and...

But that's over now. I'm committing.

Introducing the High Desert Cardroom mixed-mold relabel set!

My goal is to create a set inspired by and dedicated to Northern Nevada, my home. We live in Reno, in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada range, in the desert. I love it here. I'm proud to call it home and to raise my children where I grew up. But it's not a traditionally beautiful place. Instead of lush greenery and vibrant flowers, we have dust and sage. We have snow in the mountains which feeds a river in the valley. We have rainbow trout, and mule deer, and red-tailed hawks. The colors are muted and blend easily. That's the idea for this set.

I got the idea after seeing @fish72s's post selling a really cool set of RHCs which sort of revolved around the brown spots on the Chips $25. Included in that set were some Garden City $5s, which I fell in love with. I liked the idea of using non-traditional colors to make my set stand out. (I've since learned that lots of people like the GC $5. That bothered me a bit, but of course they do! It's a beautiful chip.) I love the light brown base, but to me, what really made the GC $5s stand out was the light green edge spot. Those colors look just like our state flower, the sagebrush I've lived near all my life.

So I bought some! They were my first real purchase on here. Soon after I picked up some Cleveland Horseshoe $1s to go with them. And just like that, I have a nearly playable set. Next step is to find a quarter, which will make the set playable, although a bit limited. Then I'll get some $25s, and maybe even a hundred, although it will never be used in our game.

Please visit the links below to find out more about the set. I'll keep those posts up-to-date over time. I intend to be as transparent as possible, showing in-progress mockups, cost breakdowns, timelines, and more. This has been a fun project so far, and I'm very happy to have found such an enthusiastic community.

Thank you for reading! I hope you decide to follow along. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

January 2, 2019

Purchased 120 Garden City fives. Official project start date.

January 11, 2019
Purchased 200 Cleveland Horseshoe ones. Got really pumped and decided to tell everyone about my project.

January 17, 2019
Told everyone about my project.

January 24, 2019
Purchased 100 yellow THC solids with the starburst pattern. I'd been thinking that I didn't want to go with yellow and that maybe green would make a unique frac. I also was trying to avoid hotstamps so I didn't have to mill anything. Then I saw the chips and that all went out the window.

February 14, 2019
Purchased 40 charcoal Ambassador Plaza $100s. Decided to get double what my breakdown called for in order to have extras and eventually offer samples. Will anybody want samples of a used-condition, mixed-mold relabel set? No clue. But I'll offer! I know at least I'd like to give a set to a few friends who have helped out with the project.

Just looking for tester barrels -- or even singles -- right now, but if you have any of these laying around, I'd love to hear from you! I'm not sure if the stuff below even exists, so maybe this space can just serve as an open-ended-question sort of list.
  • Ambassador Plaza $100s in casino used condition. Must be charcoal, not black -- the idea for this chip would be smoke and fire. @rimmerryan is currently selling some mint barrels here, but I think they'd stand out too much in a heavy-use set.
  • Garden City $2s with small inlay
  • THC Garden City $5s -- obviously these wouldn't actually be GCs. Is there a chip with the same color scheme on the THC mold?
  • Empress $25 Primaries

It might be difficult to find solid Yellows in quantity. Luckily for you I will have some coming in soon, but it's the last batch available before they're gone forever. Reserve now! :)

I'll be in touch. Using a solid from you for the frac is the leading option right now.

Our local casino, Catfish Bend, has solid yellow RHC fracs. A friend of mine who works there said I could probably just buy a rack from the cage, although she didn't make me any promises. If you're interested, I could try to grab some next time I play there.

I would love a rack of yellow RHC fracs.

I don't play there very often, and so far, only tournaments. I've never even touched a cash chip, so I'm not sure how the cage would work, but I'd be willing to give it a shot.

LMK when you are ready for the $100s ;);)
They're so nice. Why did you do this to me? The quality is actually a bit of a concern, though. I wonder if these ever crop up in slightly more used condition?

I am interested. No rush, obviously. Maybe just let me know if/when you go again? I'm not even sure a solid's what I want or if yellow is the way to go, but they do look kind of good in that mockup!

I'll see what I can do. @arch3r also is interested, so if I can grab a couple racks, I'll do it. Worse case scenario: you guys decide you don't want them, the casino closes, and I got 2 racks of Paulsons for 50¢/ea. :D

Just realized something. If I'm mixing molds, I'll have to use different size labels for THC vs RHC, won't I?

I like these GC $5.

Also, your thread is really well organized. Regarding the breakdown, I think, you shall add more $5 to get something like 100/200/200/100 or maybe 100/200/200/80/20.

Also, the first iteration of your label looks great. I see where it's going and I like that !

Congratz !

About the breakdown, I think traditionally you're right, but I'm not sure my game will play that big. We usually play .10/.20, but I didn't want to worry about two fracs, so I'm thinking we'll play .25/.25. Do you think we'd need that many fives? I'd thought about $50 starting stacks of 20/20/5.

For a .25 / .25 game, probably less $5 are required than for a .25 / .5 game ...

A little more inlay work. Still just a sketch. Fonts are just whatever font Inkscape selected by default, but I sort of like the layout. Thanks @Kid_Eastwood for the tips.

And here it is on a lineup.

I spent part of the morning looking for inspiration and came up with these. All were either found in the Chip guide (all Reno chips) or via the thread from a few years back trying to choose a single best inlay of all time. I tried to make notes of what I liked about each and how it might influence my own design. Seems like I like red denoms, which I didn't know about myself. Of these, the Bourbon Street is my favorite.
