Help requested: Looking for a name for my poker room (3 Viewers)

Outside the box visuals could fit right in too. There was something of an artist who lived in the house before us, probably back in the 80’s who left some of their work. I painted over it, but I did make sure to document it beforehand

New one,

"Graffiti Underground"

Cool, but are you sure you have written to the right Greek? :)
I have proposed any number of oaks.
Cheers
Nik.
That's a fair point! The Fallen Oak would make me too nervous that I was courting disaster. Our neighbors had a few of their trees topple in a storm a few years ago.

On the other hand, the room may get a quick name change sometime in the future should something like that happen.....

I kinda like the idea of a number of oaks. There are five of us that live here. The Five Oaks could be cool

"Oakenshield". For that dwarf vibe. Consult @Anthony Martino
I’m one step ahead of you!

"The Bosque" (bose-k)

Bosque is spanish for forest, woods, woodland, etc.

You could also do "Bosque del Poker" (aka Poker Forest but it sounds cooler/fancier)

I presented the cream of the crop to our poker group, and Oaks and Aces was the unanimous choice! I’m playing around with options and small changes, but that’s going to be the winner.

Kudos to @GreekRedEye for throwing that one into the mix!

Side note: The first comment on the Facebook poll:

“as much as I like alliteration, I like The Oaks and Aces Club. It's gotta be something fancy. Cuz y'know... it's gotta look cool when you get the house poker chips made.”

So apparently I need to get house chips made. So much for best laid plans

Hello all!

After 8 years living in my wife's condo, adding 3 kiddos along the way, we finally moved into a home of our own. most of my stuff was in totes tucked away for that whole time, including all my poker stuff, new and old. I have commandeered the basement for myself and have hosetd more in the last 3 months than I had in the previous 8 years. With another game on the books for January, it's about time I start setting things in stone. First and foremost: My room needs a name!

A few things that could lend a unique feel to things:
- We live in a neighborhood called Forest Park (It's a real forest! See below)
- We have over a dozen 200-300 year old oak trees on our property
- Because of the numerous trees in our yard and neighborhood, we have lots of wildlife wandering around our yard, including a plethora of squirrels
- Our home is in the American Colonial style. It'll be blue once we get our painters here in the spring. Our front doors will be yellow (Go Brewers!)
- Our neighbors call our house "The Big House" (Admittedly, this isn't my favorite description of our house, but under the right circumstances, I might be open to incorporating it)
- I've always liked tall, wild type grasses, and the house already had some planted when we moved in. I'll be adding more of this over time, maybe even using it as a natural fence
- We started playing every Thursday night at my parent's house almost 25 years ago. Their address # was 1012
- Our current address # is 6740
- I have a sign above the door to the basement read's "Ben's Den" which was given to me by my grandparents when I was born
- The previous owners loved flagstone and used it for the retaining wall flanking the driveway and at the front of the yard, as well as for borders to the gardens around the property.
- Puns are always a plus

I've had a few ideas rolling around in my head, but nothing that has grabbed me enough to run with it. That's why I'm turning to you fine folks! If you've got something you think I should consider, let it loose below. If you want more info, or if pictures would be helpful, let me know. Thanks in advance!

You'll be very big in Sheboygan. (I am Sheboygan North HS Class of 2000, FWIW.)

Technically, ChatGPT gets credit for the name. Is this a first on PCF? Not sure how I feel about it!

Just hire a human to do the design work!

Well of course you are going to get house chips made.

You knew that the moment you posted this on PCF :p.

I honestly was trying to avoid it. I’ve got a few sets coming down the pipeline that are forever sets for me, so I’m not really sure how much use a different custom set will get. So maybe I’ll just keep this one as a small 300 chip set, just to have something to show off.

Although, 300 chips only gets me 3 different denoms from CPC. So 500 would probably look better…..

Then again, 500 chips won’t look right in a box from @alecnetwoodworks, so it’s got to be a minimum of 600……

On the other hand…….

Don't forget to get secondaries in addition to your primaries! And a tourney set to match!

Seriously, though, maybe you could get a small 300 to 400 STT set with a base you don't normally use (e.g. high roller) so it feels special when you pull it out.

I feel like AI is a good springboard, but to really make anything shine, you’ve got to have someone spruce it up and really give it personality. I think that’s especially true for artwork. Besides, I’ve got too many talented friends to not turn to them in cases like this

I’m probably going to make this set the keystone in a lot of ways, so I’m going to let this one simmer for a while. Once I get these other sets completed and in play a few times, I’ll have had time to really think about what I’m missing, or what will be “special” for our group. It may just be a nice cash set and the box is what makes it pop.

If we need to have any tree trimming done, I can guarantee you that wood is being saved and prepped for a box/cabinet. I’ll definitely need to get in touch with Alec to see what he would be looking for if/when that situation arises

Cool if you can swing having the box made from a tree at your place. In any event, the box MUST be made from oak.

So now that the name is decided, I'm bouncing between a few variants:
  • Oaks and Aces
  • Oak and Aces
  • Oak and Ace
A couple things to know before casting your vote:
  1. All three options would be preceded by "The" and followed by "Club" officially, but one or both may or may not appear in every use.
  2. I'm going to add "at Forest Park" to at least some of the items customized for the room. There was way too much positivity about that option to leave it out entirely. Besides, it sounds fancy as shit!

Perhaps a new thread using the poll option would be in order :).

That said, given you plan to use "The" before and "Club" after, I am leaning toward #2, but all 3 seem to work well.

Why not Aces & Oaks
One of the players asked the same thing. Personally, I just don’t like the way it rolls off the tongue as much

I had another player vote for Oak then Ace and said ”I come to the first looking for the second”, which I like a lot. I’m not sure I need a slogan, but that one might have legs if I go down that road

One of my players just made a suggestion, and it's so Wisconsin, I'm not sure I can say no

Oaks and Aces Supper Club at Forest Park

For those outside the midwest that haven't had the pleasure of experiencing a supper club, from Wikipedia:

"A supper club is a traditional dining establishment that also functions as a social club. The term may describe different establishments depending on the region, but in general, supper clubs tend to present themselves as having a high-class image, even if the price is affordable to all. In the 2010s, a newer usage of the term supper club emerged, referring to underground restaurants.[1]

In the United States

In the U.S., a supper club is a dining establishment generally found across the United States, but currently concentrated in the Upper Midwestern states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois and Iowa. These establishments typically are located on the edge of town in rural areas.[3]

History

The first supper club in the United States was established in Beverly Hills, California, by Milwaukee, Wisconsin native Lawrence Frank.[3] Supper clubs became popular during the 1930s and 1940s, although some establishments that later became supper clubs had previously gained notoriety as prohibition roadhouses.[4]

Traditionally, supper clubs were considered a "destination" where patrons would spend the whole evening, from cocktail hour to nightclub-style entertainment after dinner.[5] Featuring a casual and relaxed atmosphere,[5] they are now usually just restaurants rather than the all-night entertainment destinations of the past.[6]

Typical menu

Supper clubs generally feature simple menus with somewhat limited offerings featuring typical American cuisine.[5] Dishes may include prime rib, steaks, chicken, and fish. An all-you-can-eat Friday night fish fry is particularly common at Wisconsin supper clubs, as are brandy old fashioneds.[6] Relish trays with items such as crackers, carrots, green onions, pickles, radishes, and celery are typically served at the table on lazy Susans.[5]"

Supper clubs traditionally come with some sort of live entertainment during and after dining hours, which is often musicians and bands with and without singers, or an abbreviated stage performance, perhaps a comedian. Most venues offer a dance floor in lieu of extra seating. Usually menus are table d'hote with a small a large carte component, something that can be cooked up en masse with little room for error.

I have never been to a supper club. My first reaction to "Oaks and Aces Supper Club at Forest Park" was "that's too long." But just did a little reading, and this supper club thing sounds really cool. If you are going to provide food and drinks in your home, then maybe it fits. And I also found this photo of a roadside sign of a historic supper club, which, c'mon, totally has casino vibes:

I don't know how much space you are dedicating to this venture, but if you have a bar/lounge area, you could theme that as the "Forest Park Supper Club" and the poker area as the "Oaks and Aces Poker Room" as kind of like a back room in the Supper Club?

If you can't dedicate that much space, then I agree, shorten it to "Oaks and Aces Supper Club"

If you go the "supper club" route, you are now commit to at least getting a hot dog roller.
Suffice to say, you have brought a nuclear arsenal to a water balloon fight. :)
