The usual "long time lurker, first time poster", etc.

Very excited to be a part of the community here! I've consistently seen a lot of great discussions and helpful people.

I am mostly an online poker player, but love my local home games and have been researching starting my own game for a while. I've gone down the rabbit hole and really fallen in love with the aesthetics of different chips, tables, and cards.

I am currently getting acquainted to my new surroundings near Charlotte, NC and working on my poker network.

Good luck, everyone!

Great username (lmao) fantastic community here indeed. I always recommend when it is possible to try and join another choppers established game. Often other members have lots of chips and samples already that you can go and check out for free! Rather than spending a ton of money on stuff that will otherwise likely sit around until you give it away on here! Haha

A good friend of mine is not very far away, I hate calling people out as some are cautious about new users... but for the most part I think the majority of us would love more friends that actually enjoy and appreciate the efforts we put in to chip collecting. @Statesvegas is his tag here, fantastic card room and chip collection.

Welcome to the forum, any chips catching your eye so far? Any established budget? As you will find out... you can build a decent set for a few hundred dollars, or easily over 5 digits, we have had single racks here sell for 5 digits... one bit of advice would be to skip the lower entry level stuff if you can afford it. Many people start with the lower end stuff and catch "the chipping bug" start going after higher end stuff that holds its value well, but get stuck trying to sell the cheaper stuff that doesn't hold its value and have to take a decent sized loss to move them. There are "wise ways" to invest into this hobby, this means doing your research and not paying top dollar (sometimes more as people will tell you that you are getting a "deal" that is not a deal at all!)

Know that there are folks around here like myself that would be happy to "review" said deal and let you know if it is or is not actually that. Again if you invest wisely and in quantity chips, they hold their value well. It takes some time learning the language, but if you are trully passionate about the hobby you will pick up on things quickly!

Best of luck on your chipping journey!

Thank you so much! I'd love to get more connected around here.

I'm really blown away by some of the beautiful sets I've seen browsing this forum. I hardly even knew some of these existed besides browsing some of the old casino chips available on eBay.

I think my first introduction to nicer chips was the Nevada Jacks skull set. When I saw someone with them and how much better they were than the random clays I had and the dice chips I'm used to, I was stunned that I could have paid some more up front and gotten something I actually enjoy shuffling and playing with. When I found that there's so much more available, I felt like I was in way over my head with what's around! I really like the feel of ceramic chips, and was tossing some ideas around about designing a custom set for our home games but got lost in the all the options...

I've been researching some of the posts on here about home cash game sets/starting stacks and sets that would work for a few different home game buy ins. My ideal range would be something like 25¢/25¢/50¢ up to 50¢/$1/$2. With my current setup we have tried 10¢/10¢/20¢ but we haven't run that game enough for me to get a feel of how well it plays over time. I'm hoping to spend about $1.5k between the chips and the table, though I'm hoping to build the table myself so it doesn't take up too much of the budget.

Well lots of folks that do play "micro" (most here use this term for anything less than $.25/$.50) seem to play $.05/$.10 with a $20 buy in... I am all for micro but this even plays too small for me! A $40 buy in for $.10/$.20 (try to keep your buy ins over 100 BBs, imo 200 is perfect!) That game plays perfect as we typically play pot limit circus games. It is enought to keep the gamblers invested but also not go broke learning new games like Drawmaha or Scarney...

Playing regular Holdem I would fear that a $.10/$.20 would be too small, ut again that is for everyone to figure out with their group! I try to base a game off of the # of rebuys your players are willing to loose. So for a $.25/$.50 game with $100 buy ins, you would want to players confortable in the $300 per night range... not saying everyone has to be comfortable with that, but a majority. If everyone is comfortable with $100 - $120 max... then we are back to $.10/$.20. All depends on the group!

You mention Nevada Jacks Ceramics... we recently bought a set of the Super Poker World ceramics from @rjdev7 a site vendor here and absolutely love them. I even went down to a penny denomination

I built this set to cover our regular 2 table $.25/$.50 game... but also my family enjoys "family poker night" we typically only play $10 tournaments that get chopped at 3 players, we buy everyone else back in and start over... it's not about the $$, just time together. Many of them are well below the poverty line, so cash game and family can be a slippery slope there, but my hopes are for one day to get a $.02/$.05 cash game going for the same $10 buy in and hopefully get them interested in something other than holdem/pineapple. Mostly the pennies and nickles will sit, but they are there if we need them someday!

$1,500 sounds like a good budget... I hope you can find what you need and run away! I recently paid $3k for a single rack of chips! Lol the sickness is real here!

The above chipset was about your total budget, but again built for 2 tables. Even if you go with $.10/$.20 and a full table of 10 players you could get away with
(100) $.10/ (100) $.50/ (200) $1/(150) $5/ (50) $25 that's 600 chips, I like more of each but you could definitely make do with that.

Welcome to the site!
I visit family that live (kinda) near the Charlotte area every summer, so maybe we could have a game or two when you’ve finished settling in your new area!
Good luck and hope you find your ideal chips here!
You‘ll find good people and good chips here!

I'm similar to you. I spent years playing with whatever my friends had as chips. Now I moved and have been trying to get a game off the ground. I ended up buying Majestics which to me are just fine for a "I'll use these until I figure out my *real* set." Anyway, let me know if you're in Wilmington we can see about a game.

Welcome to the PF. As you mentioned, I started my chip set using Casino Ace chips for my home cash games.
I just recently ordered clay chips (Cash Club) which is a small step up from my starter chips. I spend most of my $$ on my table, which has a custom
cloth, overhead NHL clock/Light, undertable sliding snack trays, with raised rail with FCOB LED lights inside 1/2" White Pex, behind custom plexi with suit cutouts around the rail. Still a work in proress, but liking it so far.
My friendly cash game is a $20.00 buy in, with blinds at $.25-$.25 and $20 in chips.
8- $.25
16 - $.50
10 - $1.00

The rebuys are with 4 $5.00 chips.

With my more experienced players, we play $.25 - $.50 blinds

We play for 4 hours (7pm-11pm), then a final time around the table, then cash out.

We play mostly No Limit Hold'EM but with the occasional 3 card Pineapple chucked in to change it up. It is dealer choice of Hold'em or Pineapple.
