I've seen threads about pros/cons for the general choice of whether to use a $25 or $20 chip in a cash set, but none about the chip color.

So what I got was standard colors are green for $25 and yellow, gray or black (cali) for $20s. I've seen Key West even has a very green-ish $20 chip (well DG saturn and lots of green) and there's Dunes too but that seems to be the rare exception overall. Cali is already out of the discussion as my set is going with classic colors for everything else that is widely standardized, e.g. white-ish $1, red $5, black $100, purple $500, gray is already in use and a chip with a charcoal base will likely be too hard to distinguish from black in less than stellar lighting conditions.

Initially I had a $25 in my set plan, but the arguments in aforementioned threads did convince me I'm better off with a $20 for the kind of games I'll likely run most often (not that high stakes, and possibly adding some more $1s for limit games in an addon order down the line).

However, yellow really doesn't fit in my set's theme at all. It's not like I can't make a yellow chip that looks really good on its own, but it simply looks crappy next to the others. So my current compromise is going with a $20 denom but still green color. I do not have any plans to add a $25 denom later on if going with a $20, so no chance of mixing those two up during a game.

I would like to hear some opinions on the color choice, from the PoV that it's not your own set but you have to play with it during someone else's home game. Just to be sure I know what I'm getting into with that.

Does it bother or irritate you? Do you just not care? Do you actually like green $20s? Do you like $20s over $25s in general in cash games or vice versa?

A yellow $20 is certainly not going to happen in this set (green fits the theme far too good!) but I consider going back to a green $25 if the resonance is negative overall.

(This time please keep the "ultimately you have to like it", that's imperative anyway, but I still have to make sure others will enjoy playing with it or this set is going to be very useless :p)

Personally, I don't really have a problem with it at all. Yes, green has become the de facto standard for "Vegas" $25s, and thus spread all over the place, but I like non-standard colors too. True, some of your players will have an ingrained view that green=$25, but they aren't trained seals--they can figure it out. The same argument against green $20s is an argument against Cali black $20s, and I don't know anyone who confuses a black $20 with a hundo when using Cali colors. I say, go with what pleases you.

I like both $20s and $25s, and slightly favor $20s just because they are different. I say, go for it! If you like green $20s, get green $20s!

Again, as for colors, don't worry. My Riverside set has blue $5s, brown $25s and pink $100s, for cryin' out loud. no one has any trouble with them.

Good luck!

Go with what you feel! If a specific, non - traditional color works best with your theme or what-have-you it shouldn't matter. However if your crew is used to a green $25 it may cause count errors. But as the value is not that big a difference it shouldn't be a huge issue.

But I prefer a yellow one.

Non standard color for denoms don't bother me. I have a couple of $20's in sets that are green and it's not a big deal. If the chip has the denomination on it and your players can't figure out that the chip is a $20 not a $25 after a couple of minutes then I'd say they have a problem.

My avatar pretty much sums up my thoughts on the issue, but I'll use some words.
I thought $20's were odd when I first heard of them, but I quickly warmed up to the idea, especially in a low stakes cash game, where people are always using a couple or a few twenty dollar bills for rebuys. and they work great like that.
None of my players have ever complained about it being a $20 instead of a $25, or said they got confused. I've read about it here but I don't have a lot of sympathy - I think that's more of a whiny thing from people set in their ways, than a legitimate complaint.
As far as color goes, personally I think $20's SHOULD be green. They're essentially the same chip as the $25 - they're the chip between the $5 and the $100, and as far as I'm concerned, that chip should be green.

Go with what you like. Your players may bitch and moan a little in the beginning until they get used to a green $20, but if it is mostly the same group they will adjust.

Or go something completely different like I did for my set. :D

Ultimately you have to like it.

But seriously, chip color is just a design aspect. If someone is uber-OCD, non-traditional colors may irritate them and mean that they don't like the set. This is kinda the same thing... green is usually a $25 color. If you aren't using a $25 chip and you're substituting a $20 chip instead, green is at least an option.

Nothing wrong with it. If it doesn't affect your appreciation of the set, go for it.

I'm a stickler for standard colors, but I can let this one slide pretty easily.
  • It sounds like it's going to be a top-end chip, not a workhorse, so the risk of confusion is marginal at best. People tend to remember where the "monster" chips are.
  • Yellow and Green are neighbors in the color spectrum. I would probably prefer a lighter green vs a dark green or turquoise-green to keep it close to yellow.
  • Green isn't going to be confused with any other chip in play, unless you are using a greenish frac.
  • If your game gets nuts, the green $20 frees up yellow for use on a $1000 chip later

I just made a cash set recently that uses a green $20.

I have had pretty much the same view on this, but could not find any good words on how to express it. Glad there's other people thinking like this too!

Not exactly top-end, but far from being the work horse. They are going to be used for late rebuys in the smaller games (which likely will be what's played 90% of the time) but I have $100s and $500s planned as well for the remaining 10%.

My green design is an overly dark one though :p

That was exactly my reasoning for going with a green $20 instead of a green $25. I don't need a rack of them and the $20 green chip works better with the $20 bill.

i have the old standby plastic with metal slug set and use $1 white, $5 red, $25 green, $100 black, $500 blue, $1,000 purple.
$1 and $5 used for cash games

$25-$1,000 used for tournaments.

sometimes we use $5 chips for bounties in a tourn.
