Decided to do this out of boredom and curiosity last night. I didn't realise chips used to be this cheap; these Casa fivers being my fave example...

This isn't me moaning about current prices, btw: they are what they are.

I just found it genuinely interesting to see how much things have changed in such a relatively short amount of time — crazy hobby!

That outpost listing breaks my heart. I got into it just a little bit too late and some sets were never seen again or they were only seen with crazy ass prices.

I guess it's just the demand that grew so quickly that caused the prices to shoot up. Indeed it is crazy... But are we in a lull? Will prices ever go back down? Or will they grow even higher?

This is all relative isn’t it?

I can almost guarantee that there’s some way old school chippers here who lament about being too late because they just missed out on the original Pharaoh GB haha

Edit: for those who aren’t aware, the Paulson Pharaohs GB was how Chip Talk got started

Sure, free money had nothing to do with it. Let’s see how the chips fall when people have to sell chips at a discount to buy other chips. April will be interesting.
What's happening in April, out of interest?

Yup, I think it is all relative (unless you joined in 2014). I think my point was that there are a very few select sets/casinos that are my absolute favorites and they were only here, for those prices, less than 2 years before I joined. And their likes have never been seen again (or only for insane price increases over the original listings).

I would like to see some kind of line graph showing the trends (maybe correlated with things like PCF member sign-up, casino closing, WW joining (j/k) :) )

This is what I would have expected to see; some kind of ebb and flow. When something big is about to hit, people sell (sometimes at a loss) to raise funds. But it hasn't been that way. Instead, chips gets sold at current prices, and then in between big events, chips prices go up, and then when people need to sell again, they sell at the new highs.

2014 is late to some too.

I’ve been around since 2012 and fell like I was late too. TRK was already gone and I was too broke to get a custom BCC set although I did get a tiny amount of chips in the last BCC GB before they shut down

But yeah, I get what you’re saying

I would also say that I joined too late.
But sometimes I realize that the set I have right now would not have been possible for me if I joined now for example.
Also I didn't have the funds in 2012 so joining back than would not have done anything for me at least lol.
So in a way, I joined at the perfect time. Not too late, not too early :)

I don't see how a couple $1,600 stimulus checks change this hobby... ok so some were or have been out of work due to the pandemic and agreed the increased unemployment wages due to the pandemic has increased the amount of "free money" floating about... but some racks now are selling for $3k plus each. I highly doubt anyone buying those racks saw one penny of the free money in their bank accounts. I surely did no get one red cent.

I for one don't care what chips sell for, even if its $100 a chip for something I paid. $3 for... when it's gone it's gone, you are not getting them back for $3 so I will not be selling my chips. Just hoping eventually things calm back down and that prices fall back to the realm of normal.

But we still have what seems like record book numbers of new members joining the hobby weekly. Sure they will grab a cards mold or ceramic set, but it doesn't take very long to see the posts that are getting 25 likes and the chips that the veterans rave about. Pretty quickly they will be on the prowl for compressed clay like everyone else. A few will be satisfied going the custom route but many will turn their attention to "hats and crowns" seems like harvesting has been cracked down on and honestly even if you grab some $1chips, that doesn't make a set.

There is no where near enough supply to feed the demand of what this hobby has become even in the last 3 years since I have joined... and people like myself with massive collections hoarding up what little supply there is definitely isn't helping. Lol

I personally don't see prices plummeting anytime soon! We all have regrets on oppritunitys we had back then, but personally happy with what Brie and I did manage to accumulate!

Cool post @jr8719

Great input, as ever — cheers @Ben8257!

Speaking from personal experience the covid lockdowns has been a big factor in having time on my hands to indulge in these types of hobbies.

Is there a way to see how registered members had changed over the years? I’d imagine membership has gone up dramatically over the past few years.

chipping is his retirement plan
That's what everyone says... but you trully don't understand the nature of Hoarding. My grave site is going to be a city block! I used to tell my Ex what certain things were worth and she would literally just say "STOP! we both know you are never selling a damn thing! It doesn't matter what it is worth so why say anything at all?"

She wasn't wrong! Lol

But never say never! I don't look at chips as an investment even though that is exactly what they are. I more so use it to prove to my family and friends that I am absolutely capable of inflicting self induced poverty! But anyone that has know me for longer periods of time are already well aware! Lmao

Yeah same here. I started to get back into poker and hosting games right before the lockdowns so when everything shut down I shifted my attention from hosting to collecting until things got up and running again.

These are the chips that got me into this hobby. Wish I had bought more but then again, I never bought any chips expecting them to become an investment.
Originally just wanted a nice casino quality chip for my home game. Had no idea that my poker journey would lead me into such an interesting hobby with such passion.

First time the WSOP ever hosted a $1000 buy in NLHE event and it was the only one in the series that year. $1000 got you $3000 starting stack.
Much in poker and chips has changed. ;)

For some reason those links isn’t working for me. Do they have any left?

I remember. I hated the mold then, and I hate it now. Hahahahahaha

This always make me a little sick to my stomach that I didn’t buy more… part of my order from June 2012. Jim offered the Terribles St Joe $5s for 39 CENTS!! Fracs and $1s both 99 cents

If it makes you feel any better, I decided to spend part of my first student loan on a set of 500 Nexgens — even though I was tempted by these:
