Serious question:

To determine a trend there must have been other polls of this nature, unless this is the first poll you intend to take on a regular basis. I like that you have added "2025" to the title, which will help in future years.
Yep that’s why I added 2025. This is a poll we see every year no doubt.

It’s more tournament than I would have guessed, but I’m also considering those that run “both” is a tournament selection in my eyes.

You're catching some flak for this poll, but goddamn does it pale in comparison to me drunkenly defending Springsteen's honor against Shaq.

@ekricket trolling with his morning coffee but almost 100 votes isn’t any flak!

But the Springsteen Shaq debate…that was a top tier awful take but loved you defended it!

Sometimes you know you're wrong, and that's okay. Perfect gif, I wasn't gonna win and I look good in leather.

To me it depends on how many players you have. I think the goal of a poker night is to keep the most players playing together as long as possible. That's what makes it fun.

With that in mind, I like tourney's when you've got enough players for multiple tables. Bust outs tend to be closer together which means the earlier bust outs aren't waiting as long to play more poker via the cash game.

I prefer cash when you got just one table. If you get felted early you can rebuy. Also a bit more relaxed in terms of when people can get to the game and when they need to leave.

I used to run tournaments, but that group broke up well before the 'vid hit. I always preferred cash over tournaments but most of my friends were the other way 'round and I just wanted to play some poker. Since starting hosting again last year it's been all cash. If I've got to build a new group up any way it might as well be the format I prefer. Plus then there's not so much worry about arriving on time/etc. Game starts once enough people show up (5 or 6 usually) and ends whenever we all get tired. Buy in when you get there, leave when you need to, no huhu.

The poll seems totally legitimate to me. It has teased out a trend I would not have suspected.

And anyway, it’s interesting to know what the overall community is doing.

Carping over a poll seems kind of childish/bitchy TBH. Just skip the threads you don’t care about, it costs you nothing to do so.

Cash game on a consistent first Friday of the month schedule with a few tournaments thrown in on Sunday's here and there. Dudes like the cash game cause they can come and go as they please. Drink, socialize be chill. No clock pressing them.

Cash is the only true form of poker.
Tournaments were invented in Vegas, for advertising reasons, in order to have a "championship" and a "champion".

Still, tourney has some merits, like being ideal for training and recruitment, as well as combining players of different playing and spending capabilities, since you have a guaranteed maximum loss.
The cons is that you may have (a) friend(s) disqualified early on, but those friends will have booked the evening, getting a hard-earned written permit by the Wife's General Staff, signed by the mother-in-law. :)
Edit: hosting tournaments AND then cash game is pointless.
:)

I'd like to host more tournaments, but even among my more casual crew cash seems to be the preference. I think people like being able to show up a bit late or dip out early if they need to. Also going busto right after the re-buy period ends can be a bummer for people too.

Voted! I started hosting tournaments back in 2021 and was hesitant to switch to cash. It was an instant hit with my group once I did. I host weekday nights, so cash games offer a lot more flexibility with people coming late or needing to leave early. I would definitely agree with tournaments being an easier, less intimidating option for new players.

Since I can play cash at the Elks Lodge three days a week, I've mostly only hosted a "both" night once a month. Cash from noon to 8 followed by my league tournament.

My hardcore cash players have also started to attend the Elks cash games.

Maybe cause for cash I think there are established starting breakdowns. Where as tournament there are various Tx set up and starting breakdowns combos?

Like cash there is the established below , where as there are different answers for T100 tournament breakdowns.
It's
100
200
300
80
20
Not enough $5s.

This weekend I'm organizing a cash game followed by a tournament (for the first time). That way the first player eliminated will still have played a few hours of poker.

Tournaments made poker more popular. It‘s the only legal form of poker here in public.

Time poker was ‚invented‘ - cash game with tourney structure (Time limited, 1-2 blind steps, 300max buy-in)

For me, poker is not for the money, even when it‘s all about.
Would love to play 2-3h then cash out and start again. Maybe with another set up of chips & cards : )

Cash game is more action imo.
And way easier to handle as a tourney.
As long the blinds/stacks are fine for every player.
This is why we skipped the tourney many years ago.

Usually have 20 people in our neighborhood that play regularly, so when I do a tournament it takes forever. Starting at 6 and often ends at 2am. Cash game let's me cut it off when I choose

Sounds like the structure could use some tweaking. No need for a tourney to last 8 hours. Could be cut in half and still be good.

We host 2-3 table tourneys and always wrap up in 4.5 - 5 hours. It's not a shove-fest, but you do have to open your ranges a little more than you might for a 8 hour tournament.

We used to do tournies a lot more when we were younger but now we stick to home games !!! I think two factors come in to play why we choose cash games 1 the headaches of planning and second the longer commitment required for tournies !

Is there such a thing as a cash game league?
Although we usually run tournaments in our league, cash games are pitched occasionally.

I won't get too deep into how they are scored (unless asked) but suffice to say the player that cashes out with the biggest profit is the winner, and points awarded according to a formula that takes into account the cash on the tables and how that compares to a tournament buy-ins/rebuys.
