I looked for previous posts on this but couldn't any so if you know of one please let me know.

Just starting process to design a set of custom chips. I've looked at hundreds of custom sets and got a lot of great ideas. One question I have is there a strong preference for having two different inlays (one on each side) or making both sides the same. I've seen sets both ways. I'm a little OCD and wonder if i would always want to stack my chips with one side up.

Also is there a cost difference other than extra design cost?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Personally I like them the same on both sides, but I've seen a few with different inlays that I really like. @Ronoh 's Pillage and Plunder set is the first that comes to mind.

It really depends on the set. Some work really well together and it makes the set much better. Others are just blah.

I'm not a big fan when one side is black background and one side is white background. They just don't compliment each other well I think.

I bought the Soapy's Parlor chips from @AK Chip because of how well done the 2 sided label was done.

I'm a big fan if it's designed well, and don't think I'd want to align them in stacks any more than I want to align edge spots (for chips that have an orientation.)

That said, @Rhodeman77 makes a good point - a good design will consider how they look in a splashed pot, as well as individually.

Ya, on the fence here. I think I tend to prefer the same inlays on each side, but this is design specific. I've seen some sets that shine, and they've used different inlays. I also agree that if the inlays are going to be different, I might prefer not to have one white, one black.

The correct answer is....

It depends.

You can make a fantastic chip either way.

By the way I love having a heads and tails on mine. It's let me give non answers at the table a few times.

"Will you show if I fold?"

"Let me flip on it, heads I show tails I muck."

I love 2 sided inlays.....its almost like having 2 chip sets in one set.

Off the top of my head

Pillage and Plunder
Hitching Post
Soapy's
Fast Cash Club
Casino Royale Tourney
Suicide Queen
A song of Ice and Fire
Varsity Poker
Donkwoods
Copperhead Road
Chateau De Noix (new)
Magini's Card Room (old)

There are more

Thanks for the thoughts. Very helpful. Sounds like when I work with the designer I can give him my ideas and see if it works better with one side or two. I don't have a clear two side design so hopefully I can get some options and get some feedback on the mock up thread. I'm guessing I'm a month or two out from asking for design help. Just ordered the color samples and different mold samples from CPC so I will need some time with the chip tool.

I have a tourney set where each denom has four different inlays, but each chip has the same inlay back to back.

I have a custom ASM set with different and another one with the same artwork on both sides. I have a slight preference for having different inlays, it's just something cool to have and adds to the set. But I agree that if the designs are too different, pots could become an eyesore. I solved my OCD by repeating the elements and color scheme, as well as keeping the denom the same size on both sides.

I went with a 2-sided chip design for my ASM set, but I think it worked with my design.

The front of the chips all had the same basic design, with the demons on the back; however, instead of going black/white with the inlays, I had them roughly color-matched to an edge spot.

(Pictures to be posted when I'm not on mobile, but I'll look to the original thread.)

I like two different labels if done right. My all time favorite label design is the Samurai Palace by Elijah Muse. He did an AMAZING job, but sadly is nowhere to be found in the chip world these days.

The design is almost flawless. That was the time when BCC color quality control was an issue. I literally had three different shades of blues and two different shades of edge spots in the 200+ SP's that I owned.

Yes sir. The old 3 shades of blue bonus plan:ROFL: :ROFLMAO: I also recently picked up some $1000s from a European seller and realized that the edge spots are different. The ones I bought from Holdem... (on the left) have brown and tanish/yellow edge spots. The European ones (right side) only have 2 brown edge spots. The excitement continues ;)

I went with different designs each side with my first set, same both sides on my second.

Different designs annoyed me, ever so slightly.
