I understand and get the same questions being answered hundreds of times. Again the “new members start here” I agree is helpful. But also how many of those threads we want them to search have 400 comments that have nothing to do with the original question… or 35 different opinions for answers of that question.Easy answer.
Some are simple - question, answer, done.
Others regarding certain chips, manufacturers, breakdowns, etc. aren’t.
They’ll ask a common question, people will start answering, there’s a discussion (that mirrors the same previous 100 thread conversations), eventually the other/original thread will be necroed, both will simultaneously run, then the necroed will be the primary.
This will happen again. And again. And again. And again.
Unless there’s been a change in “the best breakdown for xyz” “where did that design come from” or whatever the topic is, by doing this we’ve now 1) made the search tool less effective, 2) made the similar threads functionality less effective, 3) made it more difficult to change and update the hierarchal structure and organization for future PCF updates.
Is it a big deal? No not at all. But figured I’d share that there are some reasons to do a cursory search (and I do really enjoy the organization/management {nontechnical} side of communication/membership management platforms - it’s what my last company did).
I think we all remember walking into this community and they say “you have to make 10 posts before you can participate” well if I use your search function, weed through 400 comments and maybe come up with a version of the question I had… how is that helping me get to 10? I didn’t make the rules… and I am
Ok with it to help reduce scams… but it can definitely be intimidating walking in here and trying to find a place in the pecking order of life.
But instead let’s say I ask my question! Hey that’s one post! Someone responds, I thank them for their input, that’s two post!
Them some (insert what ever seems fit) person comes along with the proverbial “dude we have a search function” okay… thanks for that high quality thoughtful response!
The thing is someone absolutely every single time WILL take the time to come up with a thoughtful answer, of course their opinion and we all have them, nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with responding that you think someone else’s advice is crap! It’s a discussion! I would much rather post there personally than making the 4.987th post about “paper gate” and how wrong it was and what should happen for restitution! Everybody gotta comment on that drama!
But man it is painful to stop and say 100/200/300/80/20… God what an awful amount of effort that took right there!
