Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (15 Viewers)

I think if it wouldn't have been Moneymaker, it would have been someone else.
Although it would admittedly be different. It was the MM win that moved me from Paradise Poker to Stars more quickly than I would’ve without him winning the Main.

Would things be so different ? Don’t know - but they would be different.

I agree. MM was perfect for the time.
  • Turn $86 satellite into a Main Event win. Even with the poker boom and 20 years, nobody has turned a satellite win into a satellite win into a WSOP main event win. Online poker went from degenerate gambling to a respectable online pastime.
  • Be personable. If MM looked a degenerate, online poker would have accelerated, but it would have been by degenerates. TV might not have seized on the opportunity. All the big characters (DNegs, Helmuth, Brunson, etc.) were already playing poker, and TV did not care. MM cracked the barrier. It had to be someone clean cut and mild-mannered to get Madison Avenue to think "We can market this".

Having labels colormatched to the base color of a chip for all denoms in a set, except for one chip where the label is colormatched to a spot color makes zero sense.

Wait… shit?

logic in this case was that some of my graphics were limited based on choice, i.e yellowtail or green mahi mahi, so consciously wanted contrast so they stood out.

Yeah, anyone that has attempted a color matching set knows there are reasons for this to happen sometimes.

I do agree it’s better to avoid it, but it’s not always better to avoid it.

U get 50 ncv chips each one is $0.1 or $1 lol and blinds are $.1/$.2 or $1/$2. Everyone limps until someone has a pocket pair and then they squeeze, at which point anyone with two overs calls, and you either double/triple up or you get another 50 chips lol. Is so silly.

>25BB home games are some of the most unfun games to ever be in even if it is profitable.

Maybe the wrong symbol? What you said is antithetical to original post.

I have predicted poverty for myself and my group, as retired guys (chaps in British English), so I haven't put any currency signs on my custom chips.
So, 1-5-20-100 could mean dimes in the near future :)

I think all $20 chips should be destroyed and all evidence of them should be stricken from the records.
They are not the standard and never will be. You confused your players by introducing an odd unpopular chip to them. They were perfectly fine with the $25 chip they were used to until They were introduced to an odd denomination chip.
If it was standard for there to be a $20 chip for many many years then it would obviously be the other way around. And $25 chips would be B.S.
And the whole $20 chip for a $20 bill argument is just stupid to me. You are not going to cash people in by matching chips to dollar bills one by one. You don’t do that with your ones and fives etc. No you count up the total value of the chips and then count out the appropriate amount of money that matches the total no matter what the chips have printed on them.
The only time this would make sense or would be easier is if you were using nothing but $20 chips.

Absolutely $25 chips!!!!

I like how some are yellow and can be relabeled as 1k chips.

Interesting. I figured that he meant what he wrote because of the thread we are in. The corrected version is not so controversial!
Iirc there are some states where stakes are limited due to state regs. When a game starts people go all in dark for an orbit to get money on the table. I guess maybe then the straddle goes on?

Edit: it might be countries and not states. I googled briefly and didn't find anything.

my other controversial opinions about Poker and stuff which i realized after i hit post reply.

Is that: there is nothing wrong playing with Chips that aren't circles (i wish someone would make, Triangle/Square/Pentagon/Hexagon/Octagon shaped chips

Is that: there is nothing wrong with heavy chips 14-18 Grams

and there is nothing wrong with inventing new poker variants and using your friends as test subjects

There are some strange things in this world, for sure.
