Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (33 Viewers)

I think this is a fantastic point.

But…not everyone here is a “collector”. A not small number of folks are here because they enjoy hosting and want to host better - which includes better chips. I think that was my biggest gap in understanding - the number of folks here that collect poker chips and how opposite our motive/reasoning/chipping is.

Agreed, I'm more of a poker player that turned into a chip collector. But I have an OCD type of personality that ends up collecting things once I start down a path. It started by just bringing home singles from places I visited, then went down the path of learning about the old illegal casinos (and gangsters) from around here, then learned from playing in games and meeting a lot of other player that everyone didn't play poker with cash. Small groups of weird/strange people bought/found/even created sets of chips like in the casino to play poker games. And this place (and the blue wall and a couple of others before it) has pushed me deeper down the rabbit hole to where I am today.

You'd be hard pressed to find 2 people that are trying to get the exact same thing out of this place.

And then you have to put all the labels on… In my case nearly 3,000 of them.

3080 for my roulette sets alone.

My thoughts on relabeling is I think at 30c/chip for a label or 47c/chip for a BR chip encourages new people to get thr BR chips. Nothing controversial about this one just my 2c.

Or maybe the controversial part is spending 2/3rds of a cost of a BR chip on stickers instead of just getting an actual BR chip.

Depends on YOUR expectations and desires, could be you're in the $1.50 range with relabels or $3 range with RHC.

Your argument is a value proposition where not everyone shares that sentiment; some people are looking for a quality floor, which by its very nature is going to be higher in USD than cheap chips.

Starting to get the sense that many chippers find the continuous buying and selling to be primary point of the hobby, rather than the chips themselves. Not judging, just an observation.
I don't think there's any question that the continuous buying and selling is an addictive part of the hobby for some, myself included. Though, in my opinion, not the intentional primary point of the hobby. But more so, an inevitable outcome of never ending set attempts and ideas.

What is this concept of 'selling sets' that you speak of?
My, man! Agree. If I were to be buying sets I wouldn't be selling either. I don't understand buying sets just to own them a while and then sell them. If I'm buying it is for keeps. Alas, I can't buy sets, the wife will divorce me (she already threatened that in front of young children after the CPC customs order). Trying singles collecting instead... should see the vesuvian rage on her face every time a package arrives. Sets... are too dangerous.

Singles seems more dangerous! Volume of packages increases!

Better to get your own PO Box. They hold it there until you pick it up.
Devil on the shoulder!

Slippery slope with hiding. But living literally next door to the post office does help. Think she just needs to get used to me spending small fraction of my own money. Still regret a few sets that didn't go for. But they aren't as important.

FYP. So do some of you guys actually sell chips? I guess I'm doing it wrong...

Talk to @detroitdad . I think he has the best plan of them all. A couple of "keeper" sets, and other sets that are "for a limited time only". No matter what game you go to, you know you are in for an epic set - and you don't want to miss too many nights because that set you love may be gone by the next game. All for the price of shipping (give or take a few $ for market flux).

If I wasn't married to a collector, it's exactly what I would have done.

I look at it like I am buying large sample sets. Most people sample sets are 5-7 chips. Mine are 600'ish chips.

As a non-seller I think the trick is to have several sets that you can rotate, that way you don't get bored of a set, sell it, and regret it later. I have about 6 MTT sets, a few STT sets, and 6-7 cash sets and think I've got the perfect amount to rotate and not get bored of.

Living in Canada also makes it harder to buy/sell regularly (not that I sell chips).
