Curious what forum members have been experiencing in terms of tariffs/shipping challenges from US to CAN or vice versa?

Virtually every ad these days is CON US only. Without a US reshipper the classified section of this forum is basically read only for Canadians.

What I don’t understand is why sellers won’t ship to Canada? If the package is insured and ends up incurring tariff/duty charges that the buyer is ultimately responsible for why not ship? It really doesn’t take anymore time for me to ship packages to the US so it’s a bit of a head scratcher honestly.

I can understand if buyers are apprehensive about purchasing from Canada since those additional charges would be coming their way but I don’t understand why sellers still apply what seems like the mandatory CON US only on every sale thread…..

Sorry what “risk” are we talking about exactly? Extra paperwork at the post office? Assuming you mean the customs declaration?

That extra paperwork when I ship to the US takes me about 2 minutes and I have never lost a package going to the US so I don’t think there is a major risk there either.

Internationally shipped packages are a multi fold increase in risk for something to go wrong in transit relative to domestic shipping.
 
Not sure if "international" tracking is better these days than when I 1st shipped CA.
The only time I shipped to Canada the package 'arrived' at the border and that was it.
After some time I refunded the buyer who said it was never delivered.
The honest chipper eventually received the package **three months later** and paid me back.

I am comfortable with a US re-shipper, but probably would not deny a reputable Canadian chipper asking to ship even if I listed a sale as CONUS.
I do not sell much, but I have seen many adds here listing 'CONUS only' for some reason, so I played it cautiously with my 1st couple sales here.

Yea maybe I’m not understanding how that is any different if I ship a package to another Canadian or if a seller in the US sells to a fellow American

Am I more likely to have a tax liability on an international sale?

Clearly receiving inbound shipments also introduces tariff woes.

Taxes and Tariffs and missing shipments are my reasons for CONUS.
Please tell me my worries are for naught.
 
I'll ship to Canada or international for nearly every package, but I won't ship international on my chip buys, as I only use FRBs and the 20lb international limit makes it costly as crap. Just easier when selling bulk chips to keep it outside of that.
 
A certain popular Canadian label manufacturer issuing big old tariff warnings to the Yanks. Where do I shop for reshippers / borderMules?

Point of my post is to better understand how it works in the US so a question on your post. Are you charged taxes or tariffs on a package you are selling/shipping? I always assumed this would fall on the buyer?
 
I almost always put CONUS or US.

That said, I’ll probably ship anywhere in the majority of situations. All it takes is a reliable member and a PM. I don’t think preferring to deal with someone more known/trustworthy is unwarranted, and putting CONUS typically weeds that out. If you really want something, it’s always worth a message.

It‘s more difficult or problematic to send stuff to the US than from the states imo!
 
Shipping Canada to USA has all sorts of new uncertainty. The "rules" are more made up than concrete. The postal services aren't set up to handle the regulatory burdens. Who is liable for the new taxes? Well, some say the seller pays. Some say the buyer pays. Occasionally the shipping companies get caught in the middle.

Shipping Canada to USA doesn't seem to have changed much. Perhaps USPS is less cooperative or more expensive - I don't know. It is a little bit more of a pain in the ass to ship to Canada, but it doesn't seem like it should be a deal breaker.

As for reliability . . . I have never been able to make a successful claim with USPS if the package arrives with damage. Can't see how it could be any worse adding in Canadian postal service.

I was just charged ~$20 CAD on a US to Canada flat rate package, total declared value was I think $150-200 USD. I tried to figure out how they calculated that but didn’t come up with much. As far as I know the seller didn’t hear anything about it, I was just informed by Canada Post that I owed money before I could pick up the package.

On the bright side maybe they’ll value a rack of frac at $25? Haha.

In all likelihood the seller declared a value and I’ll have to do that as well?

For very expensive packages using reshipper probably worth it. For something thats $150 or so cost of reship is close to cost of tariff.

From my point of view, it is having to deal with the USPS. I've sent a couple of things oversees and they did eventually get to the intended target, but one sat in LA for a week I believe before it actually left the US. I have stopped shipping chips via USPS in general. FedEx has flat rate shipping that is very competitive to USPS, and it gets there in 2 days just about every time. They give you the boxes/padded envelopes too. FedEx international is ridiculous though. So I list everything CONUS, but I would likely still work with an international buyer. US reshippers is always fine.

I have sold and shipped more than a few packages of all sizes to CA and multitude of continents/countries( and have not had a single issue. IMO, it requires a small amount of diligence in packing + good/accurate shipping label. And use Pirateship. So far it’s given me great options at fantastic prices and automatically prints the labels that include custom information with little effort.

I honestly don’t know why so many have issues. Could it be incorrect or incomplete custom forms, bad packaging, incorrect box size or weight declared or declaring wrong number of items inside the box, etc, but again, with little diligence, I’ve never had an issue.

And regarding shipping cost: not a single time have I quoted a buyer and they said it was too high… I basically send them what pirateship quotes me for USPS and UPS and let them choose (UPS is usually significantly faster at a lower price). And I send them the screenshot for both.

P.S. to each their own, but I try not to use FedEx. Truly despise their software/interface across all platforms.
 
I shipped to Europe not that long ago using Paypal shipping (formerly ShipStation) and was surprised how easy it was. You answer a couple questions about the items and pay the ship cost. But here's the thing...it prints a standard USPS label and the package gets shipped to a mail center in the States. When they get it, they add the international label that you paid for and attach the customs form that was created from your answers online.
It was pretty slick.

Yup…reshipped a couple dozen packages to Europe for PCFers. 100% success rate.

Definitely had a couple “why is it taking so long” moments…
 
If you’re selling for a profit, it makes sense to adapt to circumstances and accommodate your customers.

But if you’re just a hobbiest, selling for what you paid or whatever, then the path of least resistance makes a lot of sense. And the extra paperwork, stress, and risk of shipping internationally is definitely not that.

Doing it on pirateship makes it super easy..the forms at the post office can be maddening, and my post office didn't really help me thru the tricky parts like breaking down weight.

The biggest limit when I didn't do it was I needed to go to the post office during work hours for international, before I figured out pirateship international. I can see why that's a pain if you work the literal same hours as the post office is open. I generally drop my shipments off at the drop box on my way in when it's closed.
