Chipper Confessions (25 Viewers)

I genuinely think that alot of chips are just plain ugly. PNY's, Hotstamps in general, a lot of casino chips just look bad to me for some reason.

When I first came here to start looking for chips and learn about them, I was getting frustrated because I couldn't really find anything that I liked. Before I found out about relabeling and found some paulsons with edge spots and colors that I finally liked, I never thought I would buy clays in general.

I only started making my 2 Paulson (cash and tournament) projects because I hated the ceramics that I initially bought and found someone to begin helping me make custom labels for me.

PNY's and Vineyards are terrible chips owing to their slipperiness, which is not dissimilar to dice chips - I sold two big sets of each for this reason alone. Add any other set with an oversize inlay to this list.

75% of the custom chipsets posted on here are awful - I fully expect others to feel the same about any custom set I own or would make.

The uglier a custom set is, is in direct proportion to how many times the owner will post photos of it at every opportunity.

Almost without exception, I hate any ceramic chipset that isn't a tournament set.

I will never oil a chipset again. It will look great after a handful of games anyway and the oil is just a magnet for gunk.

Paulson's have become overpriced but paying over $2.50 for any CPC chip is the height of madness. They aren't even close in look, feel or quality to Paulson's - even old worn ugly ones (I have two CPC sets:wow:).

A great BCC set feels, looks and handles better than a great Paulson set.

Dice chips aren't anywhere near as bad to play with as people make out.

NAGB chips are the most uninspired overpriced chips ever.

An actual Vegas Casino Paulson set with real history (Dunes, Trops, The Mint, Binions etc.) craps on anything else Paulson and it's not close. In a decade or so, some CA casinos may rival this.

The greatest Paulson fantasy set of all time are the Le Coves - this includes anything made by people on this site or those whose names shall not be uttered.

As a rule, Atlantic City Casino chips are as fugly as Atlantic City. Borgata may be the exception.

Outside of Mapes, Deadwoods and very few others, most TRK's have fugly inlays and spots and TRK's with hot stamps are awful. TRK's may still be GOAT chips.

This site is far poorer post-NAGB and its fallout, especially from a content perspective. In their time here, one banned member probably started 20% of the threads which would go into a PCF Thread HOF.

Everyone has an idea of the holy grail set. The true holy grail sets are real custom Paulson's. Relabelled Paulsons are not custom paulsons.

With enough money, anyone can buy a large set of live casino chips, play with them and return them at any time with almost no effort. The fawning over those that have done this makes no sense at all.

I came here to buy China clays two years ago. I bought them and never hosted a game.

Then, I used this site to build connections to home games because I haven't been playing live in a while. Turns out, guys that collect chips have awesome home games!

I now just stick around for the conversations. I work alone and poker players are interesting.

My tournament set is dice chips
No judgement here. One of my cash sets is dice chips too.

Hmmm ... signed up a year ago to make sure I wasn't getting fleeced on a ~$200 set of China Clays, ended up with a Chanman Table Topper, Sunfly 43mm set, and custom RHC set.

As opposed to listening to those who told me to log out immediately, I confess that I should have signed up a decade ago!

I loathe people who murder hard to find chips. If you want custom chips, then go about customizing and ordering chips. Once you murder an obsolete casino chip, it is gone forever. Yes, I know people can do whatever they want with their money. Doesn't mean I have to pat them on the back for destroying works of art.

Back in 2004 or so, I used the only oil I had on hand - which was 3-in-1 machine oil - on ~2000 Casbah Clubs to hide the hotstamp scuffing before I resold them on eBay for a tidy profit. Apologies if you own any of those horrible smelling chips.

My biggest confession... I haven’t played a live game in 10 years. :wow:
But that hasn’t stopped me acquiring more “just in case” setups. :ROFLMAO:
A while back, my son wanted to play with his friends at another house, and not wanting to lend out the only Paulsons I had at the time, decided I should buy another “less expensive” set. 1,100 DDLMs later, I have a “lend out” set that I’m not crazy about lending out, but I will.

You need a used RHC set. I’ve got a couple that I’ve built that are very very affordable, less than ceramics in most cases if you are diligent

Sounds like a good excuse to justify another set...

Oh, I continued after my DDLMs....after I decided I wouldn’t participate in the HSI sale thread, I ended up getting 950 of them.

Used RHC off my checklist. :ROFLMAO:

This thread cracks me up. :ROFLMAO:

Here are two of mine - I (thankfully) don't get the TRK hype. Especially the chips with the old lady (Jessie Becks?) <shudder> :wtf: There are some very nice sets out there, I've had the pleasure of playing with a TRK Rounders and Deadwood set, and I like the Riversides. I own a small hotstamped monogramed set with my son's initials. And I'd do dirty things for suicide king tourney set. But in general, I don't really find them nicer than the other chip manufacturers.

My other confession is that I generally don't like pink chips, other than snappers. Mounds of BTP snappers are awesome, but IMHO pink fracs and pink tourney chips almost always clash with the rest of the set. There are some very notable exceptions, but otherwise - bleh.

I'll fight anyone who says otherwise!;);)

I've only just started chipping, and I've come to realize that I may never complete one THC set. It's possible I'm painting myself into a terrible corner with my color choices, but it's not like I don't have other sets to play with now, so I guess I can spend the rest of my life trying to get one or two at a time, but God, what a way to live. I don't think I have that kind of perseverance.

It's already been said - but I just don't "get" TRKs. They feel worse, look fuglier - both colors and inlays. Outside of history/scarcity, I just don't get it. To each their own.

They do feel and sound fantastic.

Plus, their fugliness has a sort of old-school charm. Like a plaid suit from the 70’s.

I confess,

I've only ever run 2 cash games. I didn't even use more than 2 barrels of $5s.

I really need only 2 sets of chips.

Not sure why or how this hobby has gripped me, but it really got it's teeth into my wallet, my thoughts, my dreams, and my home in every way possible..

I confess,

I LOVE it. LOVE the chips. LOVE the poker. Not sure about the market anymore.

I confess,

I'm working harder than ever to quit. To try to escape and breath some free air and not think about chips. Nothing has worked so far. Hence, I'm still here posting this gibberish.
