Does anyone know where the phrase "Going South" comes from?
Back in the riverboat days of poker a successful player, Johnny Mack, known throughout the southern states as a successful gambler of sorts (probably would be considered a "professional poker player" in the parlance of our times), had hoodwinked a variety of unsuspecting blokes on numerous gaming boats with a subtle ploy and distraction... he would yell loudly, "look - the birds are all going south for the winter!" and point at the nearest window. The other players at the table would turn and look, and while their focus was drawn away from the table, Mr.Mack would remove a few chips from the table, and place them into his pocket for later cashout.
Over the years players caught on to Mr. Mack's table antics, and this most famous one has forever been known "going south."
