Hi everyone!

I'm new here and this is my first post. I've been playing poker for the past year and heard about PCF but was always a little too timid to register, but after reading so many threads I figured what the heck, let's just send it. I don't really know how I've become so obsessed with poker and poker chips but I guess I can only blame myself. I've been on YouTube looking at chip reviews and watching Jonathan Little tell me things I don't understand for several hours a day. For some background, I'm from Canada and made the classic mistake of ordering chips/case from Amazon that I now hate to look at. I bought those awful MRC ace casino chips... bleh. I really would like to buy a cash game set of the Dias Los Muertos chips from BRpoker. God, those chips are so pretty I look at them every single day even though I haven't even ordered a full set (but I did order a sample set! Hasn't arrived yet). The shipping costs and taxes from US to CAN are pretty crazy but I'm going to assume that that's just part of the game? Secondly, I can't buy more than 500 chips since I can't afford to spend more than $700, I host home games, usually small 6 player tournament games but I want to play cash games since that what I've been studying and what I see online for the most part. I want to play micro-stakes cash games for $20 buy ins (80bb) with a max of 3 buy backs but would also love to raise the stakes occasionally, maybe a $50 buy in (100bb) with 1 or 2 buy backs or whatever I can make do with the amount of chips I have. With that in mind I'd love your advice, my current idea for denominations would be:

150ct - 25c
100ct - $1
100ct - $5
50ct - $20

With these quantities I would play 25c-25c or 25c-50c games for 6-8 players. Do I have the right idea? Am I able to save more money by editing the counts in some way?

Thanks very much and I'm happy to be here (finally).

You definitely do not need and should not get the highest quantity of your lowest denomination chip. Most people will recommend getting more "workhorse" chips. For 25¢/25¢ or 25¢/50¢, your workhorse would be $1s.

8 players with one 100bb buy-in and 2 rebuys would be 2400bb total or $600 for 25¢/25¢. You really don't need more than 100 quarters for either stakes. Each player can start off with 12/12/1 in 25¢/$1/$5 for the 80bb game, or 12/12/2 for 100bb. That means you can even get away with only 100 $1 as well, since you don't need that many lower denom chips on the table, rebuy with higher denom chips.

You can probably get away with a 400 chip set of 100/100/150/50 in 25¢/$1/$5/$20 which is a bank of $1875, plenty for 25¢/25¢ or 25¢/50¢ and even enough in a pinch for $1/$1. Remember that not everyone at the table will use their max rebuys the people who are running good (or lucky) will last a session on their first buy-in, so if you cap it at 2 rebuys for the losing players, you won't really ever need 3 buy-ins per person.

When my regular group plays live, it's 6-8 players like yours, we do 25¢/50¢ 100bb ($50) buy-ins, unlimited re-buys, but we usually don't have more than $1,000 on the table. Rather than hauling a big chip set to the game, I usually bring 300-340 chips. If we have 6 players, I bring 80/100/100/20 in 25¢/$1/$5/$25. If we have 8 players, I bring 100/100/100/40.

This was super helpful thank you very much for the insight, I'll refer to this exactly upon my order! I do have one question though, if my $1 chips are my "workhorse" should I not get 150 of those rather than 150 $5 chips? I guess that would make my bank 5x lower though... I see

Yeah for lower stakes, I do bend the highest-quantity-of-workhorse recommendation. Because a $5 chip expands your bank so much, it's more flexible and helps future-proof your set a little in case you move up to 50¢/$1 or $1/$1 or $1/$2 where the $5 becomes your workhorse.

Also, it really does depend on if your players like to have big stacks of chips in front of them. Personally as organizer/banker, I like to get higher denom chips on the table sooner. Helps at the end of the night counting up stacks.

So for my game, I'd rather get all the quarters and $1s on the table with the initial players and use higher denoms for rebuys. So if I know we only have 6 players coming, I might bring 72/72/128/28, which is a bank of $1,430, and give each player 12/12/7 for a $50 buy-in, and then do rebuys with 10x $5s or 5x $5 and 1x $25.

But if your players like big stacks, you might bring 96/96/108/20 which is a bank of $1,160 and give 16/16/6 to 6 players to get all quarters and dollars on the table right away.

Beauty! Thanks again for your help, all this info will be put to good use :)

Hi & Welcome to PCF

Always plan the set for a full table even if you are only using for 6 at the moment, & 500 is enough to cover that

Option 1
For 500 chipset that can cover 25/25c to 25/50c

25c x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 160
$20/25 x 40

Option 2
For 500 chipset that can cover 25/25c to 50c/$1

25c x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 100
$20/25 x 80 & $100 x 20

In addition, I recommend getting at least 5 more of each chip denomination, for loss, breakage, etc.
I'm anal about this stuff, though. Nothing tilts me more than a rack of 99 chips! :ROFLMAO:
Great idea! Thanks for this one, I'll grab a few spare chips. Oh, I also ordered a sample set so maybe those will come in handy :)

My set of 400 chips is designed for 6 max .25/.25 or .25/.50. I used 3 100 BB buy ins per player per night as a guideline which is a total bank of $900.

If you're on a budget, 400 chips will work well. 100 quarters is sufficient too, although I went with 120 (1 barrel per player) because my group likes to limp/min raise a lot. I'd recommend no less than 30 workhorse $1 chips per player.

Yes, I think I'm going to go with a 400 chip count since I am indeed on a budget, my group does like to limp or min raise quite a bit as well so perhaps I'll up my quarter count. I think 100 quarters should be alright though. Thanks for the input!

What’s your 6-max breakdown?

What’s your 6-max breakdown?
Not optimal as I actually have over 400 chips and only 1 degen in a group of recreational players. If I was going for optimal it would be something like:

100 x .25
200 x 1
80 x 5
20 x 20

You sound just like me for real except I like the Nevada Jacks better but I ordered a sample set of the one you mentioned

I’m confused when you mention ($100BB) what does that mean I’m super new haven’t really played a cash game in person yet

100bb refers to how many big blinds 1 bullet of chips is worth. For example, if the big blind was 10 cents and the buy in was $10, you could get 100bb worth of chips for $10 :)

The way we determine chip count is based on the stakes we want to play for or can find a group of players comfortable playing for said stakes. Then we want to limit or not limit the buy ins based on a few factors, typically how serious you want the game to be, or how 'new player' friendly you want the game to be.

In my case 25 cents for the small blind and 50 cents for the big blind. I prefer PLO (pot limit Omaha) with these stakes the pot can still grow large, and you can have $200 USD bets, although rare. Different types of playing strategies for 'short stack' play or 'deep stack' play. While deep stack play typically puts more money at risk, it often makes for better playing games. Deep stack play is considered 100 - 200 BB (big blinds).

If I were to say 'so there I was with $160 USD in front of me', you might think, WOW thats a ton of money for a .05 / .1 game, or you might say, ugh 160 in a 25/50 game is like 3 bets.. - So a better communication is I flopped the nuts but I was short stacked with 4 BBs. It gives better context and infers more information

Thanks I’m very new I have about 9 other new players Interested and I’m trying to get a game going. I’m in charge of literally everything minus the place to host, so all equipment and make up all the rules, buy in and blinds etc so I’m trying to not get so confused and make it somewhat simple for all of us to learn and have fun but still risk a few dollars for a night I’m leaning towards $10 buy in and .5/.10 blinds and rebuy $5-10 just not sure the denomination’s as of yet and how many chips

With a $10 buy-in, you could do a .05/.10 game with starting stacks of 10 5c, 10 25c, and 7 $1 chips. That's 100bb starting stack. Have some $5 chips as rebuys and those players when they rebuy, give then 2 $5 chips and they can make change with the rest of the table.
With this scenario, a good breakdown (at a minimum) looks something like 100 5c, 150 25c, 100 $1, and at least 50 $5 chips for rebuys.
However, if you ever want to have a .05/.10 game with $20 buyins, get more 25c, $1 and definitely more $5.

You may want to future-proof the set by just starting out with more 25c and $1 in case you want to move the stakes up to .10/.25 or .25/.25

It can be overwhelming to try to do everything, and 9 players sounds like a great start! But often things do go differently than expected, I hope all of you enjoy the game(s).

I would suggest starting with a table topper, you can buy cheap ones on amazon, you can find some in the Classifieds, you could post in the Classifieds, but I would like to reach out to our @rjdev7 and pick up something sexy from him.

I started of with BRPro Custom Ceramics and love a 43mm chip, commissioned custom art and ordered 3000 chips, and most recently picked up about 1200 custom CPCs. If I were to do it all over again, I'd likely, pick out some Apache Royal or Majestics and then reach out to @Gear for some custom labels. I will likely still do that, because well cocaine Pokerchips are powerful drug.

Copaqs aren't great but get the job done, personally I would order 2 setups of @desjgn's cards

We have posts about BBQ, I posted how I do my brisket but there are other posts about food and hotdog rollers.

Keep it simple, you can get some higher quality items without breaking the bank, seating can be a bear but to start off with go for super affordable. In recent posts there are posts of rules which you can print off as a baseline.

I would start with holdem, but introduce crazy pineapple at the second game, and then omaha at the 6th game.

Welcome to the forum!

Here are some existing designs. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss a table topper:

You have no idea how much time I’ve spent looking into equipment lol so I ordered a round 47.25” table and a topper off Amazon a few days ago. May order another set this week because only six people will fit comfortably at one table but the place we’re going to also has one 72X30” table and I ordered a topper that is 70x35 to use with it off Amazon. I bought a double pack of bridge jumbo capag cards and I’m debating on the royals or majestic chips currently I did order sample sets of lucky dragon and Nevada Jack chips from brpropoker but don’t care much for them actually

Welcome. Like you, my first set of chips when I started was also the Ace Casino, using 1/2 blinds $20. Buy in. I had the 10 chip as a 2 by placing 2 decal ro cover the 10. I used a 5 chip and 25 chip as well. I have an 8 player tble.
I built my table, with a custom ice rink cloth, and just recently purchased another custom cloth with the Mirage theme. I just ordered Mirage no-mold chips to fit my Mirage theme for my micro cash game for a $20 buy in.

Have you looked at the group buys for chips? They can be had from .33-.39 per chips and tons of designs to pick from. You may be able to find some chips suitable, well within your budget.

You received some help with what you need for chips.
My new set will have 125 ($.25) 200 ($1.00) 50 ($5.00) That gives me lots for rebuys.
Good Luck with all of your choices.
