Buyer’s market -- I'm no longer thinking so (prices never higher!) (1 Viewer)

Then there are the boat chips which sell for stupid high prices ($3-$20 /per chip)
I never understand these comments. Maybe I’ve missed something but I’ve only seen one denomination of one set that went for double figures and that was exactly $10, and once. Not sure where people are getting the $20 number.

Asking price? Wasn't there a thread with an asking price that high that was quickly changed?

^^ I think that one was originally listed at $15 per before getting changed. Certainly no Star chips have actually sold at those prices. Most selling prices have been in alignment with other similar sets.

by hype I just mean many people saying they like "x" chips. Its not disingenuous in any way.

For example, I used to really like NYNY 1s. After being around a while now I feel Paris 1s are the best eva. My opinion about liking Paris is probably because I saw many other people like them.

Nobody is really excited about Cleveland chips or posting tons of PrOn etc.

Its just interesting how our subjective point of view changes based on a hive mind or group culture.

The reason I prefer THC is because everyone says its best so now I think its best lol

Dice chips are the best!

If RHC chips had textured inlays, I would like them soooooooooooo much better. RHC with textured inlays are quite nice.

what are "boat" chips that keeps getting mentioned?

If you're looking for pictures, look for any Classified ad for "AS" (Aurora Star) or "ES" (Empress Star). They are expensive but seem to be generally available. The story itself is much too long to get into here. If you really want to read the backstory, do a full forum search and have air sickness bags handy.

I was hoping to generate some excitement with the Cavanaughs and the Grouse Mountain samples, considering their composition and rarity. The response so far seems to have been a collective 'meh'.

Probably because we can’t have playable sets.

Might be looking to get a set soon, so hopefully it stays a buyer's market :p

Post a "wanted" add in the classifieds with your budget and any chip preferences and I'm sure you'll get some offers.

before you buy anything search the classifieds and see what those chips sold for previously. This will help you to pay a reasonable price so you don't get gouged. Sometimes posting "wanted" ads can bring people out of the woodwork and the "offers" via PM are steep.

That is a solid point. Definitely do your research.

So its chips used in a casino on actual boats / cruise ships?

I don't think there ever were actual boats, but I don't have any inside knowledge. I think it was a fiction to get an opportunity to purchase from GPI.

That said, Aurora Star and Empress Star are both listed here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cruise_ships. But wiki is open and can be editted by anyone.

It wouldn't be the first chips ordered for a cruise ship that never sailed. https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/official-casino-cancun-pron.30953/

I'd guess the problem is that outside of real chip freaks, most people pursue chips from places they've played at, or from famous casinos. I know that until your post, I'd never heard of either Cavanaugh or Grouse Mountain.

Fair enough, since they are just card rooms inside small resort hotels. I thought that the Cavanaugh's would be a great addition to the active market because it's so rare to see shaped inlays on 1's as well as a base inlay colour of deep gold. I'll be receiving all the Grouse Mountain chips within the next two weeks so I will give them a good clean and a good oil and then the splashed pr0n pics shall start!

I've also scored a large lot of old 1980s roulette chips from Club Cal-Neva, Reno, almost 3000 of them. Right now cleaning and sorting through them to see if there's enough for a decent 6-player set to put up on the market. They are all THC!

Honest feedback here - your price was too high for this buyers market. Those chips are definitely unique and very cool. But cash chips without edge spots are always a tough sell. And the gold inlay that makes them unique also makes them tough for a lot of people to put in a mixed set. But the bottom line is that their condition reduces their value. Look at these beauties - uncommon “80s Paulsons, similar condition to yours, edge spots like you dream about, listed at under a buck a chip, and it doesn’t look like they sold.

Kinda seems like a buyer’s market right now. Of course, highly sought after chips are still in demand, but some really great sets and racks of chips are just sitting in classifieds.
Interesting observation. There is a lengthy thread started in mid-April (just three months ago) about it being a seller's market, with most agreeing with that assessment.

Not saying it's incorrect or invalid, but what has changed in the last 90 days to cause such a major shift in perception?

My observation is probably wrong. Related to price...prices still seem pretty high. It just seems like chips are sitting in classifieds longer, or going unsold. Even really nice chips.
