My wife and I are about to start planning our first trip to Vegas. Our schedules are pretty flexible. Is there a best time of the year to go? Also what's the tips to stretch a budget as far as possible. I haven't been to Vegas since I was in high school. All I know is that we want to stay on the strip. I figure we have a long while to plan this out so I'm in no rush.

I always like late September/ early october... still hot enough to melt your shoes to the asphalt but not quite as bad!!! Very wide range of budgets as far as where to stay... I dont suggest Mandalay Bay they claim to be on the strip but it is a long way to the actual strip!!

What do you like to do? Gamble, see shows, relax pool side, sight see, party/drink?

Staying off strip will save you a lot. Especially if you can avoid the resort fees. Uber, Tram, buses are all very affordable and will cost you less than the $30+ per day the resort fee charges.

Staying downtown is cheaper and the people watching on Fremont Street is the cheapest entertainment you can get!

One of my favorite places to stay is Vdara. Hotel only, so quieter. Smoke free. Kitchens in the rooms. And right between Aria and Bellagio. :D

Decide what you want to do, then decide where to stay. That is my advice.

Also, Cosmopolitan for same proximity as Vdara, but you can get rooms that view the Bellagio fountains.

We will definitely want to see at least 1 show. I remember seeing O back when I was in high school and thought that was amazing. I'm obviously a gambler but she's not so much so Idk how much gambling we'd do. I know it'll cost a little more to stay on the strip but that's what the wife is saying we are going to do so that's what we are going to do LOL. I figure we'll do a good bit of sight seeing so I'm kind of thinking the center of the strip would be the best option.

I've heard there are ways to get discounts on just about everything in Vegas. Any advice?

Do you have a Total Rewards and M-Life card? If not, sign up for them now. Book your hotel directly through the Total Rewards or M-Life website as they offer the best rates. Caesar’s properties are normal less expensive. Flamingo and Harrah’s are usually the cheapest and are decently located.

I'm trying to come up with a reasonable budget for about a 4 night stay on the strip. Including shows, buffets, etc. (not going to include gambling in my budget at the moment) I know we want to see KA and O, and since she's never been to Vegas she'll enjoy just sight seeing in general. Not going to include airfare either since I have enough points built up on my card to fly for free.

Weekdays are much cheaper that weekends. Don't know how long you're staying but you could consider staying on strip during the week and moving slightly off strip on the weekend.

We usually go in March for the NCAA tournament. It gets very busy and the rates reflect that. I'd avoid March and Superbowl if you are looking for lower rates.

I recommend the Peppermill for breakfast. Great Bloody Marys and very Vegas. It's on the north end of the strip, so it could be walkable depending on where you stay and when you go.

In my experience, discounts are hard to get on the strip unless to roll pretty high.

visitlasvegas.com is a good site to check for deals and promotions.

I also recommend the rooftop sports bar at Paris. It's a great place to hang out and people watch people on the strip. They have giant Jenga, giant connect four and other games. No cover, just the cost of your food and drinks.

Unless you are really into buffets I’d avoid them. They are pretty expensive and generally not that great. There are much better more affordable eating options for every meal. If you want to do a buffet I’d vote for one of the Sunday brunch buffets with Bloody Mary’s included.

I could write a few pages on stretching your Vegas dollar, but it isn't for women that say "really....?"

Hotel: Downtown (Golden Gate, Plaza)

Check out "Frugal Vegas" queen Jean Scott online.

If you don't mind pissing off your wife to save money, PM me and we can talk offline.

TI poker room is closed.

Cheapest hotels on the strip are going to be the Best Western inside Casino Royale
http://www.casinoroyalehotel.com/

or using your players card at Caesars.com
Cheapest stays at Caesars properties will be
The Linq
Harrahs
Ballys
Flamingo
and it goes up from there.
If you go between Mar-Oct the pools are open. After Oct. 31 most pools close so check on that if your wife is a pool goer. If she is, I recommend you budget for Flamingo as it has a great series of pools, weekends has a party atmosphere with cover charges that are waived if you are a guest.

If you eat at Buffets then the Buffet of Buffets pass from Caesars will provide the food for two days. It is cheaper with your caesars card but it is now around $50 pp for a 24 hr pass. I wouldn't bother with any up charges to get you into the Bacchanalia buffet at Caesars (it's good but not worth the upcharge IMO) and if you time it with a late dinner the first day, you can get 2 dinners out of it by going to an early dinner the next day before your pass expires. Other than the Bacchanalia I would rank them Paris, PHo, Harrahs, Flamingo but really Harrahs and Flamingo have nothing special but would be ok for breakfast/lunch and the dinners I would either do Paris twice or PHo and Paris. The World Buffet at the Rio is good but it is off strip and there is another upcharge if you want to eat the seafood.

Ellis Island BBQ is another recommended meal. Only one block off strip behind Ballys. If you are into Cajun shrimp then Hot N Juicy is now on the strip in the Miracle shops in PHo.

Le Burger between Ballys and Paris is good. There is also a crepe place if you want that for breakfast right across from the Paris buffet.

Cheapest breakfast around would be the La Salsa Cantina in the miracle shops. I believe they serve until 11 am your basic 2 eggs any way with toast (you can get toast or tortilla) and choice of meat with homefries is $4.79. Anyways breakfast with coffee will run you less than $15 for the two of you.

As far as discounts, show your caesars card everywhere you make a purchase on any Caeasars property, it usually gets you discount/earns you comps. If staying at a Caesars property, I usually zero my comps by using them all on my hotel bill when I check out.

If MGM properties are your thing then also check out the MyVegas app and on facebook. It's free to play and you earn points that can be cashed in for free rooms, buffets, shows, spa etc at MGM properties. It's not hard to get a free 2 for 1 buffet but watch the requirements, some rewards require a night stay at a MGM property. Other than that, over the years I have cashed in tons of points for free stuff through MyVegas.

For me, I don't think KA is worth the price. It's a good concept with a bad show. Neat rotating vertical stage but otherwise...meh. O on the other hand is the best Cirque show in Vegas. If you can take swearing and some bald humor, Absinthe is the other show I would recommend - it is cirque like but isn't a family show like Cirque and the audience participation will leave you rolling in the aisles. You can try for discounts at tix for tonight (they also have a $5 coupon online that you should print before leaving) but if you want to make sure you can go on the night you want (especially if you are going during high season) get your tickets in advance of leaving for Vegas. Honestly the best shows are going to be full price anyways. Also check schedules before booking because the shows will be dark certain days and sometimes they shut down entirely for longer periods.

We head out Sunday and come home Friday. Avoid the weekend rates and the weekend crowds. Caesars properties are center strip and Ballys, Harrahs and Flamingo have good cheap rates. Enjoy.

If you have any desire to avoid resort fees (which is almost impossible to do these days) and say F.U. to the man, The 4 Queens downtown can't be beat. No parking fee either so it's great if you have a car. At their lowest rates, regular rooms (nothing fancy & loud facing Fremont St.) w/tax are sometimes cheaper than just the resort fee w/tax at other hotels (under $40 total). Premium rooms for +$20 are very nice w/fridge, not as loud, etc.

And this is cool too:
