Thoughts on incorporating $10 chips. I have a small 300 chips set of ncv I use as 0.25, 1,5,25,and a barrel of 100s. Some of the other denominations are harder to find...

I'll sit back and let everybody else scream that a $10 is pointless, but the way I see it, it's your game, create a breakdown that suits your games needs - not the opinions of people not in your game!

If you ever get together in SLC, let me know.

I don't mind a ten dollar chip. Especially if it's the biggest denomination in play.

@mike32 post some of those gorgeous blue 10 buck chips

Exactly this! Nothing wrong with a $10 chip if the $25s never or rarely sees the felt. Since they're NCV chips I say try it out, if it doesn't work switch it back (though this may be a bit confusing the first few times).

I have a feeling $10 MIGHT go well in our game structure. We play .25/.25 and will soon be upgrading to .25/.50 I imagine. Our breakdown:

Quarters
1s
Snappers
??10s??

Great for 50c/$1 or 1/2 limit games, where all chips are 50c with a high-denom $10 chip (a barrel of 50c chips = $10). Also make decent re-labeled T500, T2000, T10000, or T25000 tournament chips. Otherwise, there are better choices on how to spend your chip budget.

They are very annoying when put into play. Three of my friends insisted on ordering them (ASM) years ago and regret it. One just put in another order for more $5s. The players hate them and they make cashing out more cumbersome. They are the pointless fifth wheel of poker chips

You are on a poker chip forum so you will hear a lot of “MOAR chips” . But from a practical standpoint the fewer denominations on the table the better. It’s why they are extremely rare in casino and card rooms.

I guess I will let the hunt for more of the denominations I have continue

I have them in one of my sets. I've never used them. I can see the value if you have .50 chips, but that's about it. They don't work well when you have $5 chips in play already.

Put up a dry erase board and list the value of the non denom chips on it

As an owner of a rack of $10’s that have seen play onky a couple of times in 15 years, I think most people don’t need them.
However, if you regularly play $5/$10 limit or $.05/$.10 limit, they are the “workhorse” as mentioned above. If it is not a limit betting structure then they seem to be a waste.
The few times I used them was as a high denom chip in a $.25/$.50 game.
If I had a micro stakes set of Majestics I would consider the $10 but would probably just buy the $20 jetons instead as the high denom instead.

The one reasonable use I can see for $10 chips is in games like .05-.10 as a rebuy chips. Then you could do .05, .25, 1, 10.

Otherwise for any higher stake, it seems getting a 20 or 25 makes more sense.

If you play $5/10 NL they are the workhorse chip ;)

Well this is a good idea too, but file this under games I would never ever feel comfortable hosting.

unnecessary chips on the table
does this exist in the world of chippers? :p

Nothing wrong with a $10 chip... works fine if the large chip in a cash set / substitute for $20s
Mostly depends how your game plays
I don't necessarily seek them out (prefer $.25, $1, $5, $20 for my cash sets), but if I find a set with them or a $10 chip that is really cool, I'd want to use it.

Wouldn't you want to get these in play if you had them?

Beautiful!

I am in the camp of using $5 and $20. I just don't like the aesthetic and non standard approach of using 10s. I like real casino chips and emulating real casino experience as much as possible. If that doesn't matter to you then do whatever you want.

Personal Preference, but if you're putting it out here, it's to hear the other side.

I don't like $5s and $10s in play for the same reason I don't like .25s and .50s in play at the same time. More colors is more confusing. A chip that is just purely double isn't worth the extra color IMO. Get more $5s out in play for MOAR CHIPS, and it'll allow for larger stacks and less confusing breakdowns. I know lots of players that try to stack by color, and having all the colors of the rainbow out there makes eye-balling stacks harder. YMMV

For you guys who complain about multiple denominations, how do you handle tournaments when there is always tons of different denominations?

Usually only 4 denominations should be in play at the start of a tournament and that will reduce to 3 or 2 as the tournament progresses.

I'll add with the exception of T500 to T1000, denominations are 4x to 5x apart.

If you incorporate tens with 25s for example, you can't split a 25 with 10s, only fives. Those are the troublesome issues form a cash standpoint. I've offered a few scenarios where it may make sense, but for the most part a 20 is a better choice than a 10 in terms of setting up cash games.
