You guys are focusing too much on the classified aspect, and not enough on the original content part of it. Simply look at the stickied threads in the off-topic section and see how many were started by @jbutler. When the zealous over-modifictaion started because of the paranoia about the boat chips getting leaked, and guys like butler and bergs who like them or not provided great content got banned (and Courage's DCS meetup threads all got locked), their friends also started posting less frequently, and then friends of those friends started posting less frequently.

Sure, the amount of auctions and maximizing profits have also skyrocketed, but this was probably always bound to happen in a money-driven hobby. But in my opinion, the turning point was clearly when the mods decided to sacrifice long time members and content to protect their wallets.

Great point Bill - Not that it's that major when I look at my life in perspective, but I've never really gotten over the seemingly purposeful exclusion that started happening here a little too frequently for my taste...

Agreed. My BCC CDI's have been in use every three weeks since January 2016, and have been used regularly for 10 years total by me. The 5s are starting to round over a bit. Absolutely love it. They will start taking a back seat and be used mostly for cash rather than tournaments in the next few months here.

Looking forward to getting my CPC chips and the lifetime of use they will get.

Not wrong. I buy and sell a TON of chips. I think that I have only made a few bucks on 1 deal. Most deals, I have either broke even or lost money. Can't speak for others though.

Same story for me - I've sold off a few sets and random items in the past months as I've learned more about which types of chips I like and have changed plans as a consequence. Though as an international chipper, even if I sell chips for the price I paid for them, I still take a loss due to shipping and customs fees - most chips I've actually sold for less than I paid however. I've made a profit on exactly one deal, which involved a rack of chips I wouldn't have sold otherwise... someone just made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

I think the simple solutions—if one is feeling like the ads are too dominant—are to make a point of starting some non-sale threads on the regular, and/or to find old thread topics which interest you and revive them with a new comment. Other people will join in, no doubt.

I don't disagree. It is only one of the programs that we teach. I actually try to talk staff/students into our standard safety/security presentation that focuses on stuff like being aware of your surroundings, safety measures, self defense, shit like that. Everyone wants the Active Attacker training because of the dynamic of such a horrible event.

@krafticus, @Chippy McChiperson, and now that I realize it, my feelings are coming from the fact that the hobby used to revolve around fun, new content, creative design ideas, the people of the community coming together to share.

Now 80% of it is just classified for NAGB and flipped chiproom sales. It's boring.

No need to apologize, you have your opinions, as do we all. Sure there are many contributing factors, but the question was "When did this hobby change", and in my opinion it was when the bannings happened. But again, just my opinion.

With all due respect, I think you are overstating their roles in making this a great site.

IMO, what is missing from this thread is how the Red debacle combined with GPI buying out BCC and Paulson and then pulling out of the the home market reshaped the way people acquire quality chips to build their sets. Custom ASM sets plunged under Red. Relabeling was seen as an affordable alternative. Simply put, escalating Paulson prices and the boat chips are a direct result of supply and demand.

There are many factors. Pointing to the banning of two members, whether right, wrong, fair or unfair ignores how the access to quality chips has dried up. (Remember sidepot?)

Variety is the spice of life. Less variety, less spice. Your left with NAGB's and Chip Room sales.

For group buy chips? “Flipper prices” means they were part of the original group buy?

Lotta people talk about flippers but there are only so many original group buy members.

I don’t really consider someone a flipper if say they got a decent deal on some chips (say $2.5/chip) and resell them for slightly higher or market prices (say $3/chip). The profit is so tiny that it doesn’t matter at all.

I’m not directing this at you personally... just in general. Like how many flippers can there be? There can’t be many, cuz by definition there weren’t many GB members.

I don’t see any other chips that were “flippable” except if you got original sale Jacks.

You’re not seeing the forest for the trees. You came here with reckless abandon, bought chips at insane prices, and you set yourself up to be a target. Of course, it’s not all your fault, but others pounced at the opportunity to sell you chips at crazy, insane prices. It seemed to set off a ripple effect with others as well.

You’re not worried about the flipping, or you’re burying your head about the flipping, because you have an insane amount of money to drop. I truly wish I was in your position, but the reality is that even though there are numerous deep pocketed members in here, there are many just like me that can’t reach too far before hitting bottom.

As for the number of flippers, there were those from the NAGBs, you have the ones scouring the various marketplaces, the PCF classifieds insta-flippers, and some of my least favorite, which are the Chip Room flippers. I play in a small, low stakes game where we only need about 500 chip sets to make it work. It really stinks when you want to buy a set that small, only to look at the classifieds a few weeks after the sale to see thousands of chips for sale at 3-4x what they were offered at. I’ve sarcastically joked about it before. It’s the usual, “my wife is pissed,” “things came up,” “decided to go in another direction,” “realized my game only needs one tack of $5s instead of the 25 racks I bought.” It’s the same old same old. Problem is: there are too many here that just can’t wait it out and HAVE TO HAVE THEM RIGHT NOW, so the greed wins out. I don’t think it’s changing anytime soon.
