Everyone selling chips is part of a private GB (3 Viewers)

I’m sad, can you send me some boxes of free chips? It would make me very happy I think.

I’m in Vancouver right now and this makes me sad. It’s only about 200 feet away but totally unreachable.

Solution is pretty simple, actually.
  • Buy chips you like, at prices you think are reasonable and can afford.
  • Don't buy chips you don't like, or think are overpriced.
  • When selling, treat buyers as you would like to be treated as a buyer.
  • Let everybody else do whatever they want -- chip karma will sort it all out in the end.

@RichMahogany we see eye to eye, but unless we are looking at a change in the rules of this forum, there is absolutely nothing that can happen. I understand your concern and appreciate your concern for others, but outside of threads like this one, (where we can only hope that new comers will come and and read these things before going to the classifieds) there's nothing we can do.

New chippers, with money and impulse will be susceptible no matter what actions are taken.

I agree with this, but ultimately, the entire premise of the classifieds is that people can list their chips for sale and buyers can purchase them for however much money that they want. There is a market for each type of chip in which rarity, condition, and previous selling prices all play a part in the sale price. It's really not my place(or anyone else's) for that matter to critique listing prices or how much someone pays for clay discs.

We're all here because we enjoy or collect chips. I know what I like, what I'm looking for, and how much I'm willing to pay for it. No one should pay more than what they're able to afford. It's a hobby, no one should be going into debt over it. Admittedly, getting my Jack Detroit set cost quite a bit, but those aren't chips that I'm going to hold onto and resell a few months from now. I'm going to overlabel the chips to make them semi-custom and play the shit out of them. They won't be in the same mint condition that I acquired them in when all is said and done, but for biweekly to monthly use when I host my game, they're literally going to last forever. Willing to bet that they'll still stand on edge when my one year old son has his kids.

Anyway, went off on a bit of a tangent there. For mint Paulsons, I was ok with paying the price for the Jack chips with the understanding that I really can't afford more expensive chips (especially when I'm putting together a 1000 chip set), and that this is my personal grail set.

The only advice that I can give the new folks here is to study the classifieds for a week or two to get a sense of what the market is for each kind of chip. When you look at the pron threads and decide on what you like, zero in on the for sale adds for those chips and get a sense of how much it will cost to get what you want. If it's too much, move onto something else.

Definitely a tangent. Not trying to flame at all but your points are obvious and your post doesn’t seem to have anything to do with what I posted

And it has to be said... all the research in the world won't save someone from making a bad decision, or overreacting to emotion.

I bought into the SDPM cash chips at the height of the NobleCountyDanny sales hype machine. Everyone was buying, and I just had to buy some too. I paid out the ass for my massive set of those chips, and if I ever sell them, I'm going to take it on the chin for an enormous loss. They just aren't selling for what they did 3-4 years ago, and that's just the ebb and flow of our little hobby and how markets shift due to demand/new sexiness.

It is what it is.

Wasn't responding to you or @shorticus in particular, but rather trying to build upon your points. My apologies if it didn't add anything of value to the conversation :)

@JMC9389 I actually think that your last paragraph is GREAT advice. I see a lot of stuff in the forums that are over priced to a point where you can actually go look at the vendors and get it for cheaper.

Right. It's a free market that like it or not is dictated by recent biases and availability and popularity of new things that hit the market. The Jack's and custom sets that are hitting the market may end up suffering the same fate as your chips (selling for a loss down the line due to lack of interest or availability of new chips), but it remains to be seen.

The value of a chip is what someone is willing to pay for it. If someone wants to sell chips that cost them $5/chip and they get $10/chip for them, all the power to them. It's not my business since I'll never be in that market, and as @shorticus put it, I'm more than happy to stay in my lane and keep my mouth shut.

Gotcha, my bad :)

It’s a topic that comes up again every few months and it’s been a long time since anyone has brought a new point of view to the conversation is all. I feel that many members are tired of the topic when all has already been said.

Dead horses(donkey?) and all that.

Didn’t mean to comes across as snarky

And I'll say something in situations such as the other day when a poster asked to have a couple of barrels of something set aside as part of a split. Rather than ask for a split, I nudged them in a direction where some of those chips were readily available. It's not to crap on the seller or take away their business, but rather saw an opportunity for the seller to keep the set intact and give someone else a chance at the whole set.

Don't sweat it. I'm sure this has been brought up many times since you've started posting here. I myself am experiencing/observing the first apparent major classifieds sell off since I've started here.

But I feel like if we debate it enough it’ll fix the problem right! :(

it would be nice if everyone could get together in an effort to fix the GPI design tool.

This is something I can get behind. If it isn't something that is going to be hosted by PCF then surely there is other people with coding skill that can make this a reality. The only other option WAS the chiptalk tool but now that is down as well. IF any type of buy were to materialize not having a tool could significantly effect the quality of chips produced.

Someone needs to get on this.

I said this the other day also. Seems dumb we can't just upload the tool to a different hosting website. Unless someone wants to hide in progress group buys that are stored on the tool somehow? Or keep others from being able to easily design chips for a group buy? Either way it comes off as super fishy.
