Hi,
Sorry if this is a silly question. I understand that in PLO you must use two of your hole cards and only three community cards.
However, if you held J8K2 and the board came down 8T97Q, can I disregard the 8 on the board and claim a straight by using my J8 and the T9Q?
Thanks

Might not be the best example. In that hand your JK would make the higher straight with 9TQ.

But I get your point... say the board was 8T972 instead. Yes, you could substitute the 8 with your 8 and have a straight with J8, and 79T from the board.

Doh, so dumb I missed the KJ. Thanks JSD.

Can you do the same with suits?

Kh4h2c5s with board of AhThAs3hJh. Four hearts on the board, but my 4h is higher than the 3h.

A few other items new players often have a hard time understanding:

If there is 3 of a kind on the board you must have a pocket pair to make a full house. But you can have quads. Don't laugh too hard, I have seen a guy fold quads because he "couldn't play 2 cards from his hand" as he put it.

If you don't have 2 cards of the same suite in you hand, you can't make a flush.

Those are 2 concepts that new players seems to screw up the most early on.

I tell new players to physically pull the two cards they are playing to confirm they work with the board. Helps avoid getting confused trying to see a hand when you have 4 cards to look at for the first time (instead of 2).

Thanks for the tips mate.

So in this case, I have two hearts in my hand, so can I use them to make a flush, with four hearts on the board?

Yes, as long as there at least 3 of the same suite on the board and 2 in your hand you have a flush. If there are more in either the board or your hand it doesn't matter.

You always have to disregards two from the board. Just pick the best 3 and 2 from your hand. Don't overthink flushes. If there are 4 hearts on board, it does not matter if you have KJhh or K2hh, you have a king high flush, the second nuts, ignoring any straight flush possibility.

Say you have Kh 8s 7c 6s and the board is Ah Qh Jh Th 8d. You don't have a straight or a flush or a straight flush. You have a pair of 8s with a king kicker.

The other trap is, say you have AKQJ and the board is K3393, no flush. You don't have a full house. You have AK high.

Actually, he has trip 3s with AK kicker. :) Which just might take it down.

Not to thread jack, but I get confused playing O8 when the board has ... lets use A2478 and I have A2xx and my opponent has A4xx. do we chop the low? (give that the xx cards are above an 8) I know a player with A3 would get it for the live 3. Would a player with 68 also beat an A2 on that board with the live 6?.

Figuring the low when there are shared cards confuses me.

Yes and yes if I'm not mistaken. (I don't play Omaha that much)
EDIT: Second one actually no - two cards from your hand, and the forced-use 8 makes it a worse low hand than xxxx7

I'll take a stab, but I too have some difficulty with this... perhaps some O8 guru will chime in and show us the "quick" way to figure it out

I find it helpful to list cards from high to low

A2 and A4 chop... both have 8742A.. A2 uses 874 from the board; A4 uses 872

Editted after other replies... 86 has 8642A beating 8742A

A3 has 8732A and would beat both of you

Hope I'm right :)
:confused:

A. yes, both A2 and A4 chop that board (as would 47, 48, and 78 -- all are playing A2478.

B. Any hand containing a 3, 5, or 6 (with any other low card) would beat A2 on that board.

how does 86 beat A2? I'm missing it.. never mind

86 has 8642A that beats 8742A

The important part to remember when figuring out what low wins is that it goes from worst card, 8 to best card, Ace. So an 8762A would lose to an 87532 low. Even though the first hand has an A in it, it is still a high hand.

68 would have 8762A and you would both beat him, despite his "live 6"

A3 has 8732A and would beat both of you.
Not quite:

68 uses A24 and wins with 8642A (86 > 87).

A3 uses 247 and wins with 7432A.

Hell, this is why I like online poker. Tells you what you have the second the cards turn over absolutely error-free :p
(Didn't help me though I didn't see actual cards but only text. I'm a visual person.)

So, what if there are 4 cards to a low on the board. Let's go with A257. I have A3xx, my opponent has 35xx. No othrr low cards for the xx.

How does this work? Do we have a qualifying low with the live 3? Do we chop, or does my A take the low over his 5?

Your low would be A,2, 3, 5, 7

Your opponent has A, 2, 3, 5, 7

Chop

Always count backward from the highest card. It doesn't matter if the card was in your hand or on the board.

7=7
5=5
3=3
2=2
A=A

Once you find a higher card, the lower hand wins. Here, as @detroitdad said, it's a chop.

You are on the right track. You both only have a live 3 so it's a chop. Your ace and his 5 are counterfeited. Both are on the board and both need to be played for the best low.

You have A2QQ and villain has 76QQ and the board is 2358J.

You lose the low because you only have one live card, the Ace, and your low is 8532A. Villain has both cards live, so her low is 76532.

If the board is 2357J. You win. Now you each only have one live card, but your card is better.

If the board is 237JJ, neither of you have a low.
