Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for a bit and figured I'd introduce myself.

I actually learned poker after moving to a small town in Nebraska for work. There wasn't a whole lot to do outside of work, so I started playing in a free bar poker league. Over time I learned the game, started having some success in tournaments, and eventually became a slightly profitable player—which is just enough to keep my wife supportive of the hobby. I'm definitely not a pro, though.

A few years later I moved to Utah. Finding a regular poker game here turned out to be even harder than in Nebraska. Most of the bar poker scene is more promotional/pay-to-play than what I was looking for. Nothing wrong with that, but it wasn't quite the style of poker I enjoyed.

Eventually I started hosting very low-stakes home games (think $5-$10 tournaments) and slowly built a group of poker friends. Some of them caught the poker bug too, and now we rotate hosting monthly games. It's been a great way to build a little poker community.

As seems to happen with most middle-aged hobbies, we've started getting increasingly interested in the gear side of things. One guy upgrades from Walmart dice chips to an Ace set. Someone else discovers Copags. I bought a nicer poker table. You know how it goes.

My next upgrade will probably be chips, which is what brought me here. I'm hoping to learn more about the different options and avoid making an expensive mistake. At the moment I'm leaning toward ceramics, but I'm still very much in the education phase.

If anyone has recommendations on where a beginner should start—especially for reasonably priced ceramic chips—I'd love to hear them.

Looking forward to learning from all of you.

Welcome to the forum!

We have a thread for new members that has information on chip types, cost per chip, and chip set breakdowns:

For examples of ceramic chips, you could look at two different forum vendors:

ABC Gifts/BrProPoker (here are examples of their stock designs and some custom designs):

Awesome, thank you so much. I'll take a look at all these links to start!

Also, everyone seems obsessed with these THC chips. Do you personally feel they are better than ceramic? Or is it all personal preference?

I like THC Paulsons because they’re the most representative of casino or cardroom chips. I also have ceramic chips in tournament sets and cash game sets.

An often repeated first bit of advice here is to “Get Samples” to see and feel the different types of chips available. I bought a sample set that had a variety of chip types and it helped me decide what looked and felt good to me:

Welcome to the forum!

Clay and ceramic are two totally different types of chips. I do enjoy ceramic chips, but they will never compare to the unique feeling of Paulson chips in my opinion!

There are a lot of cool designs and nearly unlimited options to customzie ceramics. And they are for sure much easier to acquire than Paulsons.

I suggest you to get samples!

I have about 7 Paulson clay sets and 7 sets comprised of everything other than that (Bud Jones, Abbiati, Chipco, Matsui & Tina's) and here's how they rank in felt time:

I probably bought 75% of "ALL OTHERS" before I bought the Paulson chips mostly because they were cheaper. I think there's a lesson in there but unfortunately almost everyone goes down the same path I did.

I think I know in my head that most people like the Paulson clay... but its hard to admit that to myself because the Paulson clay (as far as I can tell) is going to come with a very premium cost no matter what...

Hello and welcome to PCF! I would mirror what @chippitydoodah said on chips. I bought 3 sets of Tina’s and a set of BRPokerPro ceramics before buying my first set of Paulson’s. In the time it took to get the other chips, I’d already played with the Paulson set. When the ceramics and hybrids eventually showed up, I never played them even once. There’s simply no comparison, so I’ve sold my Tina’s and have one brand new set of custom ceramics just sitting on a shelf. Meanwhile, I’ve got 11 sets of Paulson’s and they get rotated through. If I had it to do over again, I’d just skip the hybrids and ceramics and stick with Paulson’s.

Can you give me a ballpark on how much a set of Paulson's (for like an 8 player home game, maybe 500 chips) would cost on average? Like basic paulsons, nothing incredibly rare?

@Jers28 will likely give a more detailed answer, but Paulson sets on the Reverse Hat & Cane (RHC) mold start at $1.50 to $2.00 per chip and sets on the Top Hat & Cane (THC) mold will be more expensive than RHC mold chips

For example, The Chip Exchange (a forum vendor), is offering basic Paulson RHC chips from Horseshoe Cincinnati and prices are per chip: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/horseshoe-cincinnati-casino-chips.144067/

Alright, so definitely a bit of an investment. But one RHC set at ~$1000 still beats 3-non Paulson's, buyers remorse, and then eventually forking out ~$1000 anyway haha.

@FreeBop59 is absolutely right. You can pretty easily keep it under a grand with RHC chips, depending on condition and what sets. There are a number of really nice looking RHC sets and most are pretty easy to come by for your standard home game. When you get into the higher denominations, like $1ks and up, the prices go up, but I don’t know many home games use those as cash chips. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Detroit Jacks, which sell for a bit more (mainly the $5s) in the RHC mold, but there are several excellent options.

Once you get into the THC molds, you can spend significantly more, but there are still sets in that mood to be had at reasonable prices. Even fully customized sets in solids are pretty affordable. I did a huge THC solids set a while back and most chips in that set were under $3/chip prior to milling and labeling.

Beyond that, pretty much the sky is the limit on what you CAN spend. Just depends what you like, if you’re happy with the lineups available or like to tinker with sets, like a lot of us. I don’t own a set that isn’t customized to one extent or another, but I enjoy the tinkering as much as any other aspect of chipping.

PCF is full of folks happy to help in whatever path you choose. Myself included. 😉

Can’t leave a post without some chip pron.
