I remember modeling clay has a distinctive smell from when I was a kid.

As he puts a barrel to his nose and inhales deeply, my son insists clay chips smell the same way. He confirms both ASMs and Paulsons smell like clay.

Am I nose blind? I know I have a terrible sense of smell since I got in a fight in highschool and took one across the nose. I can still smell scents, but I've never smelled clay from clay chips.

Maybe the youngster was sniffing some modeling glue right before you asked him to sniff the chips.

That modeling glue smell lingers on your nose if you’ve been huffing it.

Or so I’ve heard…

That's the thing. I never asked him. He volunteered it, saying, "I can't believe you don't smell it."

And he doesn't do drugs/sniff glue. He boozes a touch (he's almost 23).

Was just sniffing that fresh Lucky’s clay. Smells like heaven to me.

Depends imo. New CPC’s and minty Paulson’s don’t have much odor to me. My Atlantic Maritime’s certainly do have some funk to them tho. Wonder if it’s smoke related.

I've always noticed that leaded paulsons have a smell. It's distinct and it's a smell I've come to love. I've never been sure if other clays have a similar smell because either I've never owned them long enough, or they were always surrounded by leaded Paulsons.
For all the crazy chip topics we discuss here, this one never gets enough attention. I'm curious to hear from others.

My brain says me that CPCs smell less and different to Paulsons.
It smells somehow ‚chalky‘ to me, with a chemical touch.

Dawn dish soap.

In the past I’ve bought many cheaper/worse condition chips then hand cleaned them. It fades over time, but it triggers that response in my brain.

I don't know about 'clay', but when I open up my chip case, what wafts out is way better than my pantry.

Definite clay smell. Well I guess it’s clay.

Lucky’s much stronger than anything else I have when I open the cabinet door, get a waft of HOOO-AAH:

These ancient vintage chips from 2022 still have a clay scent, not as strong as the minty fresh chips though, but a subtle scent of, “HOW MUCH DID YOU SPEND ON THOSE CHIPS!?”

For sure. Dead mint leaded the most of all. Never smelled any quite as strong as the giraffes. It was noticeable even during play.

CPC not so much

You must know. Does contemporary Paulson clay smell similar to leaded?

Similar-ish but not quite the same. Even brand new from the factory they don’t smell quite as strong as a preserved box dead mint leaded.

The giraffes came in boxes similar to the bud jones style so I bet that trapped the smell in even more on those.

I don’t know what they smell like fresh off the press. But my guess is that any smell detected years later is likely something they’ve picked up from handling, play, cleaning, oiling, and/or storage, rather than the odor of “clay” itself.
