Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (22 Viewers)

I find the search function to be awful. I now use ChatGPT to search the site.

Unfortunately it often pops out results where a newbie is asking a question and the response is “use the search function”

Bridge cards are too small for me to riffle shuffle properly, it is a pain. Or it could be the bridge cards I got are bad but I think it is the sizing.

  1. I'd rather play with sets/customs that users have poured their heart into vs a heartless stock casino chip set with pretty spots.
  2. I hate the concept of a standalone "GOAT" - which again will mostly just go to prettiest, but completely ignores set cohesion, themeing, story.
That is all, thank you for listening to my TED talk.

Oh look one of the most creative and artistic set builders on PCF values lineups and his hardwork over singular GOAT gratification. lol! Don’t disagree with your take! Start a GOAT lineup. I think we have had them in the past and it’s fun. Was either cord, pocketaces, can’t recall who ran it tho…could be way off…

I can accept this. I’ve never owned a heartless stock casino set for very long. But sets from casinos that are built chip by chip? Or even mixed sets where it takes forever to find the right racks? Some of us pour our hearts into sets that way

I’m not a customs guy, but if we’re dumping on JACKS and Horseshoes, I’m all for it!

This is why I left the HoF committee, and never go to those so-called GOAT threads. No respect for (one of) the first sets to roll off the ASM production line. No nod to the story of why a set was made. It's all about spot progression and use of colors. It's coddling the uneducated masses, not truly what sets make chipping great.

We just need to have a beauty pageant and a ‘but they have a great personality’ pageant.

Problem solved.

Must an auction run to completion? Can the seller accept the highest offer at any time before the auction ends? Say Im selling a rack of dice chips on auction and someone bids $200, rather than have them wait a day or three can I close the auction and sell it at that price?

All spot progressiom does is make lower denoms look like trash! Also it only exists at all because Paulson and CPC charge more for the better patterns.

The price difference at Paulson for spot patterns is Pennie’s at most! CPC yes but they don’t push for spot progression. Casinos do not have a “set of rules” but for the most part they do indeed follow spot progression for viewing tables from above!

Look like thrash huh… Wanna see spot progression.

(No I don’t use $10s and $25s together it just helps in two table games on a larger bank)

But if you can’t see the beauty in this progression, the simplicity and elegance of a gradual progression. Shame on you

Auctions must run to completion, that's the point of the auction. Once it starts and there's a legal bid, someone has bid knowing there's a set of rules. I know when the auction will end and will plan accordingly. Its different if there's no bid and someone just messages the seller a price, but even then its borderline shady to not do it in the thread/auction.

Otherwise its just "accepting offers".

Ability to define a min/max range would help here.

“my range is 100-150 - I am willing to let these go for 100 but if the auction is not over - and i’m at 150 - end the auction”

150 could be the “buy now” price and 100 is hidden as the lowest your willing to accept.

But other than "family photos", when do you see spot progression? Yes, the $100s look great, but why keep the best chip in the box when playing with non-degens (like family poker on Thanksgiving)?

The best spots should go on the workhorse chips. If they were the most expensive (CPC pricing) that's even more incentive to keep them in play!

I agree, but you also don't want a solid black chip for a hundred if you ever do put them on the table, its hard to balance which is why my black cat set has high level inserts even on the fracs lol

There's nothing wrong with making every chip beautiful, but I feel the higher denoms should have a bit more bling and distinction for when they hit the table. Lower denoms still look great, but they also look like lower denoms.

Just because an insert-pattern is more complicated or the most expensive doesn't mean it will end up being the best chip. I agree the workhorse should ideally be the star of the show, but I don't think spot progression is actually a limiting factor to accomplish that. Most of my favorite leaded THC and CPC sets typically have 3-4d14/3taxx spots for a reason; they are the perfect balance of classy and fire, and allow the surrounding denoms to seamlessly fill out the rest in most instances.

Not saying I'm a purist (i.e. many old school sets use 3d14 twice in a row starting at the $5 and still 'progress' at the hundo), but progression done right certainly elevates a set.

Sure, I like this. For security and game integrity as well, easier to see when a stack is $60 or $600, my apes need all the help they can get.

I've thought about building a fully 3d14 set once or twice. There's something really beatiful and classic about that edge spot.

They are either apes or they are squirrels. My players can also easily get confused, which is why I can't have a Cali color set with a standard sized white $100 lol...
