There was a web series that followed one player from start to end. If they were eliminated, they followed the player that took their chips and continued.

I believe this would be a far better way to follow events. Even complete unknowns would be more interesting to the casual poker fan than a final table with no back-story. You might even get some "away from the table" action that could be shown during breaks or when the main character folds, thus making day 1 more watchable. A lot of adjustments can be made with the time delay. This would probably this would require approval (financial compensation?) from the "stars", but I think it would be workable.

Now, when we talk about huge historical Casinos (Dunes, Sands, etc) I get it.

But any random NV casino chip isn’t any more special than non-NV chips if both are similar chips (THC, leaded, textured, etc).

Or in other words, the history of the casino the chip is from only really matters if the history of casino is significant (I recognize the tautology here).

But I’ll put forth from just my perspective - to me it’s not that they’re from NV/LV/Cali, it’s that the others are from Arizona, Mississippi, Alabama, Boston, Topeka, etc.

I like chips that have a connection somehow.

We vacationed where the Aransas chips were, hell week for football was at Oceanside, we lived right outside Paris, HSI was our “home” casino for me and my wife, I met Adolfo, I grew up with my mom and grandma going to pechanga, cps were my first ever chips, my wife’s fav city and where I proposed is New Orleans (Mardi Gras chips), etc.

I only own and keep chips that have a personal collection to me - it just so happens that LV/NV chips are so much more likely to have a story or string or 7th degree of bacon than some random *ss casino in a flyover state.

To each his own. I remember trying to build my first Vegas mixed set and I ended up compromising and making it a Nevada set. Kinda lame. Like if I had to make another compromise, would it have become a pacific time zone mixed set?

So I agree with you but only to an extent. Even though it seems like every random city has (had?) a JACK or a Horseshoe and even though those places have no significance to me, chips from a real casino will always be cooler than fantasy chips. For me.

Main Character is pontificating about how much his friends and neighbors buy art now simply to buy art and as a form of investment/showmanship much more than out of any respect or love for the art.

I think what we’ll see with chipping is a continuation towards 2 main parties of those folks, and Tina folk.

Neither of which make any damn sense to me when it comes to what they like and how they rate stuff.

I think it’s also an age thing. Chips from historical Nevada casinos will be from the 50’s-70’s. Other states or riverboats probably what 90’s-2000’s?

Could also be related to the fact that most chip collectors/owners are from an older generation with more emotional attachment to places they have personally visited.

If more people traveled to Atlantic City, AC chips would be in demand. Nevada, and more notably Las Vegas, has been a booming tourist destination since 1955. More people with connections, coupled with people wanting that "authentic" feel for their home game, pushes Vegas/Nevada chips into a higher demand.

If more people traveled to Atlantic City, AC chips would be in demand. Nevada, and more notably Las Vegas, has been a booming tourist destination since 1955. More people with connections, coupled with people wanting that "authentic" feel for their home game, pushes Vegas/Nevada chips into a higher demand.

The real question is, do any casinos in Barrie have Barrie branded chips?

Cause there’s at least 1 or 2 chippers that would be all over that.

Not sure how controversial it is, but it's crazy to see how (rightfully) well-received the below relabel set is, yet barely anyone is making relabel sets anymore, despite having basically more options than ever w/ all the Tigers being added to the mix and live Vegas $1s being cheaper than since before my time here in the early Covid days. Wild. I get people rather slap nostalgia on a plastic color-wheel (price:quality ratio is obviously great on those) but come on.

I try my best not to let my chip habit become too much like stamp or coin or sports card collecting.

I’m very interested in all the nitty details, but ultimately I mostly want quality chipsets I can use to host games. Any history is just a bonus.

I don’t understand all the Tropicana and Mirage and Flamingo relabels. And I don’t like relabels in general. But that set is fire. You’ve got the bright colors that all the NAGB lovers love, but since they’re all 312, it looks cohesive.

However @kk405 just dropped a banger relabel today.

For me first and foremost I want playable sets either casino, card rooms, customs, relabels or fantasy, really doesn’t matter. Playable sets that are customs or relabeled provide a big security factor. But all casino, card rooms have some kind of history. There are tons of cardroom chips out there from Cali, Washington, etc and other legal casinos/card rooms. And illegal casinos and card rooms have really interesting appeal/history to some including myself. Hot Springs illegal casino were still a big thing here until the late 60’s so they have a strong history & appeal for me almost more that LV/Nevada casinos.

There are as many areas to chip collecting just like every other collectible. If you think it should be limited to only one thing or another you’re missing the whole point of collecting.

So completely not worth it. You pay a premium (often huge) for clay chips. You pay somebody to mill them well (or buy the tools to hack them apart yourself,) then you pay for labels. Lots of costs there that are tough to ignore, when Tina hybrids are such a decent product for so much less money.

I’m surprised at the number of people that are on board with relabels tbh. I do not have the pockets to have this opinion, but the labels just do not replicate inlays in a way I find satisfying.

They are great for people on a budget, or for getting chips that would never see play to work (like roulettes). I can’t believe people with deep pockets go for them, though.

Maybe it’s just an exercise in creativity, not about the collection. In that case, whatever floats your boat.

Less relabels.. feels like there's a few additional items at play (above already mentioned):

• The current pricing of Paulsons make CPCs as affordable if not more so in many cases
• CPC closure, likely a short-term drain of financing from those pursuing a custom set (relabel or otherwise)
• Designer availability.. not many seemingly around right now IMO, or those who are are slammed
• Effort/complexity.. generally not geared for the new folks

There was a time…..
When there was no Tina
When no NAGB had ever happend

So relabeling arose.

But there was also a time…..
When all the major chip manufacturers sold customs to the public
When there was nobody that printed labels for poker chips

And relabeling wasn’t a thing

I see it as a way to reuse,recycle, and add value to otherwise unusable stuff or stuff of limited use.
Sounds crazy, but there are three of my sets I’d probably never sell and two of them are relabels, lol.

I’ve bought quite a few old unused/unplayed customs from others to repurpose with relabels and believe me the cost including new labels worked out a lot cheaper than customs or building a set of casino chips and a whole lot less time waiting for customs. It’s not a deep pocket endeavor. And it puts chips back into use that would just sit and go to waste in some dark drawer or closet.

I think this is a fantastic point.

But…not everyone here is a “collector”. A not small number of folks are here because they enjoy hosting and want to host better - which includes better chips. I think that was my biggest gap in understanding - the number of folks here that collect poker chips and how opposite our motive/reasoning/chipping is.

Yup! That’s me. I think collecting is weird. But I’ve seen headlines that suggest that it’s an expression of the human condition, so what do I know?
