Anyone else crawling back in the hole?

So I started up my monthly home tournament when the 7-day average in my state dropped below 200.

My wife and I are fully vaccinated. There are no vaccines for the others members of my family that live here. Numbers are creeping up like crazy now. Current 7-day average of 312, well north of my previous line.

Anyone else skip their game lately due to this current wave? Or should I be YOLOing it since I'm vaccinated? Or putting in stricter anti-SARS-CoV-2 procedures like vaccination proof? I'm currently on a temperature check at the door system, and "please don't come if you are sick, or have symptoms, or had a known exposure" system.

What are you guys doing to stay safe?

Staying home. I even have most of my groceries delivered. I don't remember the last time I bought gas! Yes, I've been vaccinated. School without masks is making me nervous.

I will be venturing out next month for the Angel Fire (NM) meetup, after which I'll be back in seclusion.

Jigsaw puzzles FTW!!! I had forgotten how much I enjoy doing them. The harder, the better! :)

Numbers are surging in germany again as well.
But since my wife finally got her first shot 3 weeks ago and is about to get her second, we're not that concerned anymore. My parents, her parents and every high risc relative or friend of us has been vaccinated by now and we think it's time to move on.
Yes, infections can still happen, but the chance of severe illness is - as far as we know - very very low.
Like the WSOP, we have a mandated vax policy at our game and I've been hosting again for a few weeks now.

The home game I participate in has fully vaccinated participants. I think this is probably necessary since many participants have families that have children that are too young to get the vaccine at the moment. I expect more home games will open up soon, though I don't know how easy/practical it is to require vaccination proof to participate.

And I'm sure everybody saw it coming, but there have been increasing cases of fraudulent vaccine cards and passports out there.

Most of my players are guys from work. Here in NY, the state reimbursed employers for paying the employees 4 paid hours so they could leave work early and go to their vaccination appointments. I know who has been vaccinated and who has not. It has affected the invite list.

At my home game, I ask everyone to be vaccinated as my daughter is not eligible yet. My players all agree. Games definitely don't fill up as quickly as they used to. With the uptick in positive cases, I have definitely thought about postponing another game until it gets to a more reasonable level.

I’m not back in the hole yet, but definitely heading back in that direction. As several others have said…it’s the “too young to be vaxed” kids I have at home that cause the caution. I completely get the sentiment of those who are vaxed and don’t have this situation, but that doesn’t change mine!

Yeah. I stopped going to poker rooms once the delta variant started wreaking havoc and I still haven't resumed hosting. I'm not usually an overly cautious guy, but there's very little lost by giving it a few more months and reevaluating

We're vaxed, expecting a booster in about three weeks. No poker around these days unless you do Anthony's thing at the casinos.

The best part is that where we live, Lakewood Ranch, is 20K+ mostly older people, mostly vaxed. So we play tennis at our club six days a week within a pretty tight group of around 40 players, and then have lunch every day seated outside at the associated country club. Suppers at home, no going out for music, etc. Bummer.

Other than grocery shopping, that's about it.

We are flying up to DC for a week later this month, our first travel since the pandemic's start. Staying downtown, that will be more of an adventure...

We're still playing, but in the last month or so, I've gone back to asking people wear masks. I have a young son that isn't yet eligible for vaccination and a pregnant wife, although vaccinated, at a higher risk for serious illness if she catches it.

I'm also a Pfizer recipient, and the evidence out there currently is that Pfizer vaccines aren't as effective as the others in preventing illness as the others, and that immunity wanes after 6 months or so from the second dose. I will be accepting the booster dose when offered. It still however does a great job of preventing serious illness, which is what it's supposed to do, so still well worth it in my mind.

I've pretty much gathered from the beginning that COVID vaccines would be like flu vaccines (new one every year tailored to the most common variants circulating around), so this isn't much of a shock.

Yeah, over the summer I played live in a few non-casino games, and hosted once myself (all players vaxxed).

But with the Delta variant running wild even as people stop taking precautions, I’ve retrenched. Wearing my mask in public and limiting outings to bare essentials. No poker.

My vaccinated niece returned to college and within a week tested positive. So she has to spend 10 days in quarantine. The campus is 95% vaccinated but there is still a major outbreak. 50 the first week, over 300 by the end of week two.

I'd say it's a mixed bag for me.

I've been travelling quite a lot lately, mostly for work. I've gone on five out-of-state trips since mid-June, and I've got two more coming. One is another work trip this month, and the last is a small family event (wedding) in October.

Other than that, my whole family is vaccinated, we've been avoiding unnecessary trips out of the house and masking up when we do go out. And I still haven't hosted a game since early 2020. :(

Tonight's game cancelled - one of the guys just tested positive yesterday - :cautious: (had Moderna Vax).

Don't get discouraged. Breakthrough infections will happen in the fully vaccinated - it doesn't mean they aren't useful. Those who test positive after full vaccination are most likely to have asymptomatic or mild disease, and their chance of requiring hospitalization is at least an order of magnitude below those who are unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated, which is the key to not overwhelming your health infrastructure. Once the 5-12 age group is cleared for vaccination, it will make return to "normal" a much more tangible thing.

Hosted a few games with vaccine passport when numbers were low, but shut it down for now. Once my kids are vaccinated I'll start back up even with current numbers.

There are no vaccines for the others members of my family that live here.

Then I wouldn't go out. You might be protected from the virus but they are not. Until they get vaccinated they are at risk. Remember the vaccine teaches your body how to fight the virus. It doesn't teach it to stop spreading. So while you may get the sniffles they can can get the full brunt of the virus until they are vaccinated.

It's not all doom and gloom. It is (and has always been) a measured risk. Just take what precautions you can until the vast majority of persons around you are fully vaccinated. Distance when you can. Mask up when you should. Limit your closest/frequent contacts to fully immunized people when you can. Quarantine for the prescribed length of time if you turn out to be positive. This is not acting out of fear. This is acting out of prudence and compassion, which is the exact opposite of fear. You have not given up an ounce of freedom when you do this. In fact, you are enhancing the freedoms of others around you.

Nothing, even full immunization, can entirely remove a virus' ability to spread. It is also a function of the virus' inherent infectiousness. But immunization can reduce the chance and frequency of spread on average by reducing their viral production capacity if they happen to have a breakthrough infection.

Laugh it up, @HaRDHouSeiNC
One of our own is dying from this crap as we speak, but go ahead, laugh it up.
Yah ok Sure
You wana start a fist fight because people wana be uninformed sheep have at it.
Pretty fkng scummy dude.
first off toolbox I wasn’t laughing at anyone in the hospital.
there is a difference in being in the hospital and being a sheep.
my buddies wife is in the hospital too.
guess what. Living in a hole didn’t help.
a few here I’m fine if they covered the hole in honestly.
And if masks work why aren’t they working for everyone catching Covid here.
you can’t piss in your back yard without a mask and you get 100 a day catch Covid with an 85% vaccination rate.
Funny I don’t see talk here about what helps ACTUALLY like be healthy
Get exercise.
take your vitamins
Know where a medical center is with therapeutic treatment like regeniron in case you are high risk or get a low oxygen level. It’s what likely saved his wife not your stupid fkng masks.
but keep living in fear uninformed.

i was actually laughing at how cavalier people are with such little safeguards in their life. I mean really.

I for one wear a life jacket in the shower now
And now have seat belts on all my lawn chairs
Never can be too careful

If you come in my house you must wear a helmet in case you trip

Cars in my driveway can only be driven at idle speed, any Accelerator use is not allowed

We’ve had more deaths here in Guam by suicide than Covid in the past 7 moths, 18 so far. But no one says a word about a seriously concerning trend thats happening across America now thanks to people livelihoods ruined and people turning to drugs right now.
but stay in your hole. No one has ended the flu in 100 years but if you think you are smarter than the flu in a hole good luck to you. You might wana get some knowledge to be ready for Covid. Cause like the flu eventually everyone will get one form of it or the other. My 103 year old grand mother got Covid. She was also healthy and slept through it after given therapeutics for being at risk. Have fun in your hole.
And no I’m not like ANTI vaccine I got it even though I know at 40 and with zero issues it’s not needed. And not slowing down the spread here either right now with nearly 85% vaccination rate here it’s as many cases or more a day as in the Peak last July

You are right my reply was doom and gloom. However I was mostly trying to point out that vaccination does not prevent spread as your last few lines stated. And if OP fears that they could give it to their unvaccinated family members, IMO then OP shouldn't go out.

If there weren’t a pandemic on, this is just the type of person I’d want to play against.

Well…actually…

Most studies find little to no benefit from taking multivitamins.

I’ll admit…I’m kind of shocked that someone as learned as you with respect to health and wellness during a pandemic would make such a statement.
