State of the Current Union/Chip Buying Advice (1 Viewer)

Well, I went and read up on Bergs, but in my search, came across this thread and this specific post:

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/when-did-this-hobby-change.52144/post-988440

It looks like this place ebbs and flows and has drama like any online community in which a relatively large number of people share similar interests/passion, but are from all over the place and different walks of life. PCF has its core that mostly gets through all of this and trudges on. I suspect that will continue being the case.

**Just wanted to thank y'all as a newbie. I get PMs from long-time members and send off PMs as well, and have only had extremely positive experiences there. I am learning a lot, meeting new people, and having a great time while doing it. I appreciate you all.
There is some (much) truth in that post you cite, but there is some (much) revisionist history in it as well. I’m not slagging the poster, but it was not wholly objective.

Someone (@BGinGA you seem to like them so chime in here) give me the pros and cons of these hybrids before I jump onto the Post Oak Poker Club thing when it happens please

My opinion, and I’m probably not alone here, is that those 39mm hybrids handle very similarly to regular ceramic chips.
The 43mm hybrids (with the smaller recess) are the ones that impressed me. These 39mm hybrids don’t. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with them - there isn’t. But they just don’t stand out to me as at all noteworthy. They’re good ceramic chips.

This is a pretty good assessment. I'm not a fan of 43mm chips in general, so that plays into it for me as well. That said, one advantage for the hybrids is that you can change the label to personalize them after they are made. That's not the case for full face ceramics.

The hybrids are nice, but they are simply not for me. Sometimes, the way they are hyped here, the small-label hybrids are presented as being vastly superior to other non-hybrid ceramics, and that's not the case for everyone. I have (or have had...damn you, Moscow) samples of the various hybrid chips, and they didn't impress me enough to make me want to buy them (in fact, they solidified my personal preference for Chipcos and ABC).

To be fair and as objective as I can be, that post is my honest assessment of what happened. But there probably were no two people on this site more at odds with each other than myself and bergs, for a variety reasons. So my viewpoint of him is unquestionably biased. There are several people here who have many great things to say about him. I'm not one of them. But they've also met him in person. I have not.

For the record, I love my regular 39mm ceramics (gotten through OWPS, RIP Sal) and they have served me very well over the last 7+ years.

What a loss to the community. OWPS was a great place. I didn't know Sal personally but it was very sad to learn of his passing.
He was great at what he did, I always felt the Tangiers set was just lights out awesome.

@BarrieJ3 love the new avatar. But sadly, you are no bergs.
In some ways...you remind me of Bergs
I had never really noticed PCF had this stuff for insta and facebook and whatnot. So I clicked on Facebook just to see what we post out there and who comes across it.

Bergs continuing to troll all the way through FB is either really sad or hilarious, but either way garners a chuckle.

Am definitely a new chipper. Can confirm it’s a weird spot to be in right now. Paid what I felt was a pretty penny for a set of new majestic, but rushed the order a bit because I was worried prices would go up.

now, a yearish later, I’m struggling to want to pull the trigger on something really fancy and unique because I don’t know how long it’ll be before people will feel safe having regular home games again. But, at the same time, feels like prices are constantly going up and I’d hate the fomo of missing out on a good deal (like the big ceramic group buy that I somehow only found out about yesterday :((((. )

TLDR: hard to want to buy chips when everyone wants to stay home and socially distance.

I have no problem with sellers trying to get the best deal they can, particularly because that means they’re probably offering the chips for sale to the whole community. Yes that drives up the price, but at least it gives people like me a chance as opposed to when awesome chips/sets get dealt via PM and the wider community never even gets the opportunity to buy them.
It seems like sort of a circular thing. If you're on record as somebody who thinks all chips should be sold for top dollar, then yeah, nobody is going to want to sell you chips at cost. I'm not anti-american or anti-capitalism, but I wouldn't mind some sort of a club with restrictions - Wouldn't you agree not to resell chips for a profit, if it gave you access to all the chips in the world at cost?

Many folks wont want to sell to you either if you carry on and on about pricing/profiting/community, and make a point of detailing that every sale of yours is, at most, what you paid for it. You have some nice people that'll respond and help out privately because of that, but also others who won't respond at all because of that.

You calling me a commie, Frenchie?

What I’m saying is most new or even intermediate chippers dont have people offering to sell to them at cost, because they haven’t built the connections and relationships with people yet, so the only chance they have at accessing quality chips is when they get posted for sale here.

It could go the opposite way. Once hosting home games is safe again, the demand for MOAR chips may go up.

Note: I have not hosted nor played in any home games for a year. I don’t understand why anyone would have been doing so.

It won't plunge but I'm fairly confident demand will decrease as people become able spend their disposable income on alternative goods/services that weren't possible during the pandemic. It may also cause supply to increase as people start viewing the $XXXX they have in chips as giving them less and less utility compared to say going to concert/restaurants/vacations. How much that will affect prices and when though is a toss up.

We quit playing for a couple months because of the hysteria, but then got right back at it when a lot of things reported didn’t seem to be adding up. We’ve been playing for almost 10 months now. Not a single issue whatsoever. Had a hell of a lot of fun too.

You guys play with masks on? How do you prevent risk?

Maybe they all work from home. That’s what I have Done for 11 months now. Not much risk when your daily commute takes 1 minute.

I meant the game... thought he meant right back at it as in they started playing home games again.

They are home games. Some guys in my group play three to four different games a week (there are several old, retired guys). I play once or twice (on occasion) each week. My only regret is that we stopped for the two months.

Ah, so "fake newz" huh? Why am I not surprised?
