Need quantity but will take any that are available. Don't have a whole lot to trade but I'm open to any discussion about $$ and can be very flexible with anyone who has racks available.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a sense of how many PCA secondary $5 are in circulation?

@jpietrella you are absolutely right to be persistent - putting a set together from scratch is the best part. At the end of the day there is so much you can do - I am sure you will eventually find what you need :tup:
Allow me to be cynical for a moment though...indicating a price context for the chips you are looking for is useful (I often do it in my WTB ad) when there hasn’t been any activity in them for a while, but you are always at risk of getting your bid shopped when stuff is in high demand. When stuff is hot I wouldn’t expect people to play nice.

Now this is more a general comment...Whether this is the best $5 or not is debatable (remember taste is a personal thing) but when I read about chips “relative $ value” to others, I think the hobby is in a bad place :(

That's what was ordered at Paulson (data given by TCR after sales were done).
Most of those will have been sold via TCR sales BUT I presume 50% or more of the chippers back in the day are not active anymore.
Who knows how many racks reside with these former chippers (but I think a lot since most had the tendency to build big sets)

How many chips did we see posted in the classifieds (let's say in the last 12 months) ?

I’ve been thinking over this a lot lately and haven’t really come to any resolution. I’m also looking for $5s I’m also the one that offered $750 for a rack of secondary fracs. I’ve wondered how that affects the community and what the overall community consensus is on offering higher prices. Still processing it but I do like hearing other people’s thoughts.

In any case I do know @Ben8257 always makes some great points and has the good of the PCF community in his sights. :)

I bought a set that had 3 racks of them. I bought it to keep one rack of 5s instead of two, like a moron. Sold all the rest.

It appears demand is higher than supply. Defining supply is hard - are we counting chips sitting in a set? There aren't racks of PCA secondary $5s in the classified section. How about Ebay?

If we are at the point that a new buyer has to pry chips out of a set to get what she/he wants, then the prices should get ouchy. We might debate if this is "good" or "bad" but it is entirely predictable. As others noted, extracting the five dollar chip from a set breaks the set.

I wonder if a buyer would have better success if they offered replacement chips plus cash. Two racks of PCA primary fives plus cash for two racks of PCA secondary fives for example.

There have been almost a thousand members visiting PCF in the last day. 350 racks hardly makes a splash in that crowd. I know is sounds like a lot of chips, but it isn't compared to the size of the community. Also, remember these chips are from a sale many years ago. Plenty of time for them to be "lost" in the hands of people we likely will never see again.

So it makes for a worthy quest. Almost a holy grail sort of quest. Good luck to everyone chasing down their much wanted chips. You know they must be out there, if only you could find a way . . . . DrStrange

PS My PCA set was from the days that a 600 chip set seemed like plenty. They set in my closet, weeping tears of rejection. It has been over a year since they hit the table. Damn you Covid19. My babies are lonely.

You make good points. I guess the question is how many sets does on person need lol? I know the answer around here... all of them! Somebody new, as myself, has a limited budget. I can only buy chips I'm going use. Everyone is different, I get it. It does get a little annoying and ridiculous when you're looking for chips and you see pictures of people with a set of 2200 chips or something similar, and I ask myself. Does this person even use these? Are they just in a closet and something you can talk about and say you have? That part of the hobby is a little frustrating. Again, thinking out loud, everyone can do whatever the hell they want. It's just the way I see it. I'm probably going in a different direction here so I'll leave it at that :)

This is a tough hobby, that's for sure.

I have ~23 playable set. Precovid, I hosted 50 to 60 games a year. Every set got in play over the year. The sets with fractional chip got a lot more play time.

Do I need the full chip count of the larger sets? Nope. The only time I got full use out of a giant set was one three table session co-hosting All-In-At-The-Alamo. Woo, hoo that was a good time. Five levels of chips playing deep stacked circus games. making nut-nut to sweep a giant pot. We live to win a few hands like that.

One of the benefits of being old as dirt is I have plenty of money to fund my hobbies. I remember being young but relatively broke. There are fond memories from those days - playing till dawn, eating and drinking too much, chasing women. Young folk get plenty of perks. But they don't often get to have all the best chips.

But someday, YOU will be that old guy with all the best chips. And look back fondly on the years when you were young. -=- DrStrange

No, you are right...there is something ridiculous about this all...
I own a 3 table tourney set but never hosted more then 1 table....and own more sets then we could use in a year without using one twice.
Still, do you know someone that bought Paulsons or other clay chips, holds on to them for 5 or 10 years and sells them at a loss ?

I come from a time that it was hard to convince yourself to pay up to 1 or 1.5/chip.
Why, because there were so many options were out there...TRK, ASM, BCC, group buys & vendor lines (TRK, BCC, Paulson, ASM) and TCR sales.

Now we only have CPC left (for clay), TCR sales and what is for sale here & ebay.
Since TRK are beyond most members budget and there are not that many good BCC sets out there...not much left besides Paulsons.
The community today is ten-fold what is was back then (members & buying power)

Can you imagine if there were no more TCR sales ?

Everything is ridiculous right now.
When I put together my current go-to cash set, I was good with using just a single rack of PCA $5s because that's really all I need for an 8-max .25/.50 game. I don't buy more than I need, especially when we're talking about $450-$500 per rack chips. AND, I was fine with that decision, because people are ALWAYS buying and selling racks of PCA $5s. So if I raised the stakes and needed 2-3 more racks, I'd be able to find them without much trouble.
That was 100% the state of affairs at the beginning of 2020.
Times have changed.

This reminds me that I got into crypto and poker chipping at the worst times haha. But hey, even with the market so inflated I still love chipping so damn much. Do you all see a correction happening with the market like other markets do? I can’t imagine this price growth is sustainable.

Those seem like the golden years. I'm not young and I'm not old, I'm 42 and all I know is my arrival on the scene couldn't have been more poorly timed. I should've jumped in when I wanted to, which was about 15 years ago. It is what it is. I have some chips, even some nice chips, so I can't complain too loudly, but I certainly paid out the ass for most if not all of them compared to what I saw prices were even a year or two ago in some cases. My goal in all of this is to just have around 2 or 3 nice sets I can use. I'm lucky to even have what I have. There's some really great members I've had the pleasure of chatting with who have given me some solid advice, so I try to listen.

So, I'm not your typical collector I guess. I don't see a need to just have it all and deny other people the pleasure in owning something nice. This is why I have basically nothing left to trade. Anything I've bought and couldn't use I've sold back for exactly what I paid. Some might see this as a stupid business decision, but I'm not above being stupid :LOL: :laugh: Just look at some of my posts.

It depends on how many new members will be sticking to chipping once the covid situation is behind us.
That will release some sets & racks (HSI could suffer from that, Jacks too)...not so much the older sets besides the racks and sets that got scooped up by these newer members.

Only in case @Windwalker leaves the scene...we'll all be eating ramen for months to come to build funds ;)

Only because THC have not been available at normal prices.....and even then...not even close ;)
But modern THC chips have lost some of that 70/80/90's mojo...that's for sure

Best I can recall . . . . I paid something like $400 for 700 PCA chips. The secondary fives were $1.15 a rack. The rest of the chips were cheap. I think the ones sold for twenty cents each.

I know it is hard to imagine how things were a decade ago. Every month brought more chips from The Chip Room. Some of the 'left overs" sales were amazing. Way more supply than demand.

Yes, there were people who lost their ass on Paulson chips. I bought out a Bahamia chip flipper's inventory for a bit more than $0.40 per chip for 5,000 chips. He easily paid triple that. Those chips still aren't worth their original Chip Room price - the $25s don't go for a dollar a chip even now. Please don't get into this hobby expecting to get your money back much less make money.

Even Vegas chips are no sure thing. I bought three racks of 1992 Tropicana ones on Ebay lately for less than a dollar a chip. And the consensus here was a dollar was the fair price. 25 year old Vegas chips from a well known strip hotel for less than face value, go figure.

I buy what makes me feel good. I rarely chase the highly sought after stuff. Over the years I have gathered up more than my share, but I didn't pay that much.

I believe @Heavyball had the breakdowns of how many chips were originally released... but I haven't seen that chart in over a year 38k sounds a bit high but might be in the neighborhood. Remember many people want lots of $5s and not as many $1s or $25s... the casinos many times have pretty even breakdowns, therefore is its quite common for these sets to be short when it come to $5s... add in the fact that people murder chips for their customs (I don't know off hand anyone doing that to these but very possible) and just like the Jacks there is a shortage of $5s for the other sets out there.

@Thomacetti did you have the original breakdown chart of what was available also? Can't believe you guys didn't buy them all for those prices!! LOL curious what the sale prices would be now releasing leaded minty THCs into the comunity.
