State of the Current Union/Chip Buying Advice (1 Viewer)

I've only read this far and I want to say you now have my undivided attention. (Well except for the diversion to write this post.)

So "cocaine giraffes" are a chipset I don't know about?

Also I have no idea what this thread is trying to accomplish and I guess I am going to unfollow it unless someone wants to fill me in on more than vaguery?

What am I missing here? Have things changed lately? I read just about everything that’s posted, and I’m not quite sure what the issue is here.
I dunno. The only thing that is constant around here is that some people think things have changed.

But they really haven't. Some people are selfish, lying, cheating, profiteering, stupid, and mean. Some people are generous, truthful, honest, giving, smart and loving.

And guess what?

Nothing bad. The Mail Pr0n thread was getting derailed by people arguing over hoovering up chips and the current chip market, and it's like the third time a thread has gotten similarly derailed in recent days.

I thought it would be helpful to have a place where people could discuss if they so chose, if for no other reason than when people start chatting about it elsewhere, people could just point and say go talk about it there.

I myself was not personally saying anything has changed, or hasn't, was simply giving people a place who felt the need to discuss a place to do so.

Well, I went and read up on Bergs, but in my search, came across this thread and this specific post:

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/when-did-this-hobby-change.52144/post-988440

It looks like this place ebbs and flows and has drama like any online community in which a relatively large number of people share similar interests/passion, but are from all over the place and different walks of life. PCF has its core that mostly gets through all of this and trudges on. I suspect that will continue being the case.

**Just wanted to thank y'all as a newbie. I get PMs from long-time members and send off PMs as well, and have only had extremely positive experiences there. I am learning a lot, meeting new people, and having a great time while doing it. I appreciate you all.

As far as the Giraffes go, I’m not sure why anybody is surprised. Leaded Paulsons with textured inlays in near mint condition that are orphans routinely sell for $350-$400 per rack, or more. (Think about golden eagle $5’s or PCA $5’s or others)
But now you’ve got these dead mint leaded textured inlay THC Giraffes in CALI colors? In a complete set with fracs? These chips really are the best of the best in my mind. Does that make them “worth” $650 a rack? I dunno. But if they’re better than chips we all agree are worth $400 per rack, then, yeah, maybe they are. I don’t care what anybody says, with their lead and their textured inlays, these are UNQUESTIONABLY better than any of those boat chips or whatever. And those things sell for $5-$8 per chip or more, right?
Anybody who’s upset about the prices of the giraffe chips just isn’t seeing things realistically.

I've said it before, that if you put 800 family members in a room, there will always be sides. That will happen with a group full of friendly degens too... This is why I have a lawyer with me at all times when visiting this place...

That space existed/exists whether or not you started this thread.

I don't disbelieve anything you've said and I think you were well-intentioned here, but my experience with such brokering or speaking for folks who feel a certain way doesn't usually go as intended and it's often unnecessary.

If folks have an opinion, let them express it, stand behind it, and ask questions/invite discussion as warranted.

In my minds eye, people jump in here, go, "Ohhhh Barrie, smh", maybe drop some comments, this thread dies in a day or at worst week.

Meanwhile, I haven't seen any more comments in the Mail Pr0n thread, noone's calling for mods, and there's no cleanup!

We have this happen all of the time. Usually it is a great discussion with our HR department LOL!

I don't strongly prefer leaded vs. unleaded chips but I know many people do. I agree with everything you said and it is hard to say how the Giraffes could ever be over priced. Honestly, the chips blow me away and I never thought we would see a mint set like that in the wild. There are just so many dead ugly sets made or nice looking sets on RHC. The Giraffes really have it all and I won't begrudge any price being paid for them. Heck, last I heard BTP Blaze quarters were going for 1k/rack price range.

The lead is a big part, but the textured inlay is just as important. At least to me. I got some of those Jerry's Nugget $1's that everybody loves, because they're live THC's with a cool spot pattern, and I couldn't stand them. I had to get rid of them. The inlays feel like lame stickers. The chips just feel so cheap to me, compared to the real thing. I have no idea how people find love with those boat chips. Honest to god, they haven't made a Paulson chip in like 20 years that I want to own.
So that's why I have no beef with the price of those giraffes.
