A Raised Rail Build - Double Ring Design? [March ...delayed] (1 Viewer)

Like tnuts

Using threaded inserts instead.

It's a two-step process: 1) drill and 2) screw in the insert.

T-nuts are a four-step process (per my OCD): 1) drill bolt hole 2) drill recess with forstner bit 3) mount t-nut, and 4) set with epoxy.

I like the idea of being able to skip the forstner and epoxy parts entirely. We'll see how it works out.

What advantages do threaded inserts and tnuts provide over traditional screws?

Ahhhh, now I understsand!

By using bolts and inserts it's super easy to disassemble the entire table. Mainly for resurfacing the table, or reupholstering the rail.

My table has 8 furniture bolts holding the rail on. I can quickly unscrew them and easily clean the table under the rail... or replace the playing surface if I need to... or dissemble for easier transport to take the table to another game... etc. etc.

It's one of those things that you don't NEED to do, but once you realize the flexibility it adds, you'll be glad you did it.

This looks awesome! These bolts were something I was looking into but I couldn't find what they were called and the Home Depot guy looked at me like I was crazy.

Will have to look into this for my upcoming build

Here you go. They are in the long/flat drawers in the fastener aisle. Make sure you get the proper length bolts for your table+rail thickness!

You're very welcome!!

I also put fender washers on mine (same aisle) to distribute the load to avoid damaging the wood when the bolts are torqued down. I also think the two-tone silver/black adds a little sexy to the underside. Silly, I know. :p

Maybe a bit extra, but what does the top of your table look like?
Curious as to what those two black areas are

Is this build back on???

Back on --- got delayed by a pergola project, and now busy getting the house ready for a family get-together next weekend. This will probably push out to the weekend of the 4th. But it's happening. Gotta get it ready before the September tourney!

How did this jig work out? Looks sweet, considering it was 3D printed? Did it hold up?

Honestly... the jig made the circle cuts easy. I highly recommend the Bosch jig by @One Eyed Dollar — and would never make a table with a jigsaw again (that is - if I’m looking for perfection with the cuts).

Here are the three sheets after a quick sand, perfectly lined up...

Slight change before making the cuts today... went to an 88" long table (previously 86") to make everything fit a little better with the table graphics...

@justsomedude

Explain the cup holder rings? Can’t the cups just sit on the surface of the rail...?

Tons of debate about it here on PCF. You can search and probably find a dozen or so threads on the subject.

Very long story short... without the rings, the foam will eventually compress under the cup holders and you’ll get those notorious “dips” in your rail.

The rings avoid the dips and sags...

Updated the rail detail with a more accurate depiction of dimensions (for the spacer rails), and placement of screws/bolts for final assembly. Although the nuts represent threaded inserts that will go in top surfaces (not bottom surfaces as shown)...
