After this initial phase of "everyone stay at home" passes I think the next phase will be "return to normal life but wear a face mask".

Just listen to the first 2 minutes of the most recent JRE podcast

The reason hand sanitizer is such a hot commodity right now is because early on the narrative given to the public was "wash your hands and use sanitizer to reduce the spread". In actual fact washing your hands and sanitizer is a minor point of transmission relative to people talking, breathing, or coughing.

The coming narrative in the media will be that people should return to work and return to life but always wear masks. Given that is my premise, I am talking to a friend about buying some masks in bulk from China. I am scared however of quality control issues as recently several hundred thousands of masks were discarded in Canada due to poor quality control and masks were tearing and falling apart.

I was looking on Alibaba and there are loads of companies in China that make the cheap single use 3 ply masks.

Does anyone know about masks or have a reputable supplier?

What I got out of that exchange is basically just need any type of mask. Cloth. Scarf. Anything to block your exhale from scattering. The idea is your mask protects you from infecting others, not protecting yourself

the hard core PPE masks should be left for doctors and nurses who have heavy exposure to this stuff

let’s all wear a mask and do our part

You should try to find a supplier of these

Let me preface by saying I have no idea what I’m talking about, but that doesn’t seem to verbally stop others on here.

Face masks. Most of the ones people have, do less than 0. You’re wearing it on the off chance that you have Covid, and are unaware. So sure, wear it to the grocery store, keep that cough or sneeze in. Also please think for yourself. Stay away from people and washing your hands, much more effective.

Realize that any mask you get your hands on is not going to do anything to stop the virus, and instead you just created a nice warm, moist, enclosed space right in front of your breathing hole. So on the off chance someone sneezes, coughs, talks next to you, you’re giving the virus the best chance it has.

And hopefully all the back and forth has died out by now, but just a headsup that the post is a bit tone deaf, and please don’t be surprised when someone drops a line.

If you are interested listen to the rest of the podcast. Lex is involved with research that shows places that use masks have lower rates of transmission. It is also just common sense, if you have something in front of your face then you will disperse less saliva into the air via coughing, talking, or sneezing.

The main concept to be aware of is that my mask protects you and vice versa. Therefore, a society where everyone wears masks will be at significantly less risk than a non mask wearing population (thats the idea anyway). My hunch is that this research will be fleshed out and this will be the new normal coming in the next few weeks/months.

I am also interested in recommendations. I dont plan to leave my house for some time, by the time I do hopefully the doctors and nurses have enough of the masks they need. Which mask are effective against this thing, only N95?

I have been doing research into masks since I was interested in buying. The N95 and KN95 are both respirators that have high degrees of filtration and will protect the wearer against the virus. It is important to recognize the KN95 as it is much more readily available while not recognized as much by the medical community out of what seems to be just bureaucracy. You can look up lab tests and the performance is similar/identical and 3M who makes both masks also says they provide very similar performance.

Bottom Line: try and get KN95 since they are just as good and in less demand as people don't know about them.

In terms of using masks to protect other people it seems pretty much anything will work to prevent the spread of saliva into the air. The common surgeon masks that don't seal around the mouth still work fine but serve a different purpose than protecting the wearer. These loose fitting masks actually do almost nothing to protect the wearer as they don't seal around the face.

I see where you are coming from Grant and I think in the future people will be looking to stock up on N95/KN95 masks once supply becomes available. However, these KN95 and N95 are significantly more expensive than the cheaper single use 3 ply masks.

Ya only half way through so far. Love these, always super interesting.

And I don’t outright disagree with the above, it makes sense. I’m just saying, eberyone and their mother is doing home made masks for the workers needing them and this and that, meanwhile you have the WHO and CDC and whoever else saying let’s not get carried away.

Introduce masks across the board in a western country, I’m guessing Human Factors Testing would show an immediate uptick due to a false sense of security. But again like you mentioned, none of us know until research and data is wrapped up.

Interestingly, the WHO came out with a statement earlier saying masks don't help and then they changed their mind later and said masks do help. I trust these guys less and less every day.

I oddly had a bunch of N95 masks on hand which I used to pick up at my local Sears in the tool section but they were available at the hardware store too. I have been using those for years when I do yard work because I have really bad hay fever/allergies and research led me to them many years ago.

When this whole shit storm is over I should get some for yard work as well. My allergies in the spring/summer are horrible.

Can you answer the reasonable question to your OP? What’s the intent for the masks, resale, stocking local shelters, etc.?

This actually would make a difference as to the type of mask and such as well.

They honestly make a huge difference with allergies. I use them when working in dusty places like the attic or even just when doing deep cleaning too. They will probably be hard to find for a while but they last a long time so it’s worth buying some to keep on hand anyway.

Obviously, they are for resale otherwise I wouldn't be shopping in China I would be shopping at Walmart (China is also where Walmart shops).

This is basically what I have been reading too.

There are guides on how to make them out of bandanas, t-shirts, pillowcases, etc. If you are like me and can't sew, there are also templates to cut a t-shirt into a mask.

A bunch of Etsy sellers are offering washable cotton ones, with or without filter pockets, for $7-12+ apiece. Washing them seems like a pain, or at least a reason to need more than just one or two, but I guess that's where we are at the moment.

I can see a lot of people, particularly more macho types, using those turtle neck scarf things that all of the Antifa and Proud Boys wear at their little rallies.

Well I won’t say fuck off, but I certainly can’t wish you luck. I would assume if they’re for resale, you wouldn’t need worry about quality or actual effectivity.

If I sell something then I back it up. Of course I am concerned about quality and effectiveness. If everyone is going to be using masks in the new version of the future then we should have supply of good quality products that work.

I figured this was your reasoning, and it's why I didn't say anything more than I did. You're probably right that more masks in the market is a good thing. Just rubs me the wrong way.

I bought 90 masks from China at $2/mask.
I am donating 80 of them to my wife’s geriatric facility where she is an occupational therapist.
They are essentially with out PPE.
7 patients positive for Covid all over 70 years old. 3 already dead.
7 therapists tested positive for Covid so far with 5 pending results.
This is out of 23 personnel.
TLDR:
If you can get masks donate them.
Don’t prey on people with life saving PPE.
If you want to prey on people, just do another NAGB.
At least those prospective buyers are choosing to be prey.
