How long does it take to make a pizza? (1 Viewer)

My coworker has two legitimate homemade pizza ovens. I'm not sure how long it takes to make the dough--whenever we come over for pizza parties she has personal size balls made which she flattens out and we put the toppings on ourselves. I think she makes those the day before. Once it's in the oven it doesn't take any longer than 10 minutes.

I mean I make my own dough and that probably takes 20 mintues or so, cause I knead it a good amount. I then let it sit for about an hour and a half. But I've heard it's better to leave it overnight.

12 for extra crispy.
Yeah theirs definitely wasn't crispy. Amazing, but not quite crispy :D . But there were about 10 of us there each time I was over, so there's a line to think about.

Do you have experience making dough or breads? Do you know how to grow tomatoes, milk cows, or age salted meats?
Depends on your definition of "scratch." ;)

Honestly, making dough isn't too tough, and can be done usually within a half hour, but you'll need time for it to rise (and you can't rush that part of the dough making process). But like others have mentioned, the best way it to make pre-portioned balls of dough and then cling wrap it and put it either in the fridge or freezer for later use. Usually the day before is convenient.

My little brother had a science project, and he wanted to make pizza from scratch to demonstrate the different stages of ingredients from solid, liquid and gas. I thought we could do this in one afternoon. The pizza dough recipe he chose took 24 hours.

The reason for this post...

I called the pizza joint at 11:15am to put in my order (because they're slow as f*ck and I wanted it ready by noon). They asked for "30-45 minutes." I rolled in at 11:53 and the lady said, "looks like it has 10 or 12 more minutes to go."

I finally got my pizza at 12:17, more than an hour after I called in my order, and almost 25 minutes after I walked in the door.

I almost lost my sh*t on that poor girl.

Just did it on Saturday with the kids.

10 mins to make the dough by hand, less if you have a machine
at least 2 hours to rest
5 mins to roll
30 mins to rest
5 mins to top (more like 30 mins while the kids fight over the last piece of hard salami with me fighting to have them put some vegetables on there)
2 mins to cook (on my gas barbecue, preheated on full for 30 mins with two pizza stones on the grate)

I can do this simply by eating about 5 ounces of cheese....

My "scratch" is to buy fresh dough at the Publix a mile from my house. It's as good as we can make at home, unless I already have a batch of Jim Lahey's or Mark Bittman's latest tweak of "no knead dough" in the refer.

Once you have the dough, it takes much longer to preheat the oven or grill to 550+ with bakestones in place (above and below) than it does to bake the pizza.

My dough recipe is so simple and it always tastes great.

Wet:
1 cup of water, heat in the microwave for 30 seconds. Make sure it’s warm and not boiling. Add a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup if you’re Canadian and a packet of yeast or a teaspoon if you have a bottle. Stir well

Dry:
2 cups of bread flour and half a teaspoon of salt. Then add seasoning. We usually do something like small amounts of cumin, black pepper. This Saturday we put in some taco seasoning. I let the kids play and add whatever they want. I’ve done this since they were tiny and it helps involve them in the process. Even though they’re in their teens they still enjoy doing it. Mix well.

Once the wet starts to bubble, mix wet and dry. The proportions are right so you don’t need to worry about limiting the additions. Just dump it all together.

Mix until combined in the bowl then dump it on the counter and knead as best you can. Once you can pull the dough to about a foot without it breaking it’s good. Put back in the bowl with a cover (damp towel or cling film) and leave for a couple hours.

After the dough has risen, take it out, divide into four and roll out your bases. That’s it!

Mmmm. I love pizza. You go guys, bless this thread. Please share lots of pies.

Oh! Now you've done it! First we had the "Is a hot dog a sandwich" mega-controversy, and now you're just baiting to start a "Is a pizza really a pie?" brouhaha. I think I'll be headed for the nearest bunker.

There are ovens that cook pizza at 900 degrees in 80 to 90 seconds. http://www.canerosso.com/#main
