Worried about actually playing with my Paulsons? (1 Viewer)

I can totally relate to this topic, that’s why I’d rather my friends host games cause I don’t want to seem OCD. It would distract me from focusing on the game too haha

Wait... what? Is this serious or a joke? o_O

I just last month started handing out a cheap scratch off to ‘bubble boy’...
So. This is a issue of our creation. It'll be a story.

We add bounty games about, eh, every 5 to 6 weeks ..... Hell, now that I said it we will do one next week. But instead of a cash bounty, we do 5 or 10 dollar lotto tickets. Well, you get 8 guys with 17 tickets, they go nuts. A few did them on the rail, the flakes get near the chips, chips toss them in the pot. And once they hit cards, little black spots appear and wipe off. But, they keep appearing.... Like card herpies. Lost 3-4 decks before I figured out my numbnut friends were ruining my cards.

The problem is now I feel uncomfortable actually playing with them? What if people want to eat while we play? What if someone spills a beer at the table? I’d feel awkward telling people we’re going to play with my fancy ass chips- but no food or drinks allowed. Do you guys worry about this stuff with your Paulsons? Or you pretty much just clean them as needed and don’t worry about it?

What if the sky falls? What if aliens from area 51 break into your house and eat the chips so they can poop out diamonds to fuel their spaceship?

A set unused, is a useless set.

Play them and enjoy them.

I've been playing with my Classics once a month for the last 15 years and just found my first flea bite. Get those chips in play.

Play with them, but if you don't and decide to sell, they are not Mint anymore, at least the ones you used for a few games !!

I can at least relate to having had the same feelings of anxiety when I received my BTP tourney set. Did that stop me from getting those 43mm beauties into play though? Hell to the No!

Put those chips in play! :)

The first time would be worst. After that break in game I'd be fine.
Planning to keep my grail set clean and collecting dust, and just play with my second lesser favorite :)

I did some statistical analysis a couple years ago on thousands of listings from here and on eBay. I catalogued "new", "mint", and "near mint" chips and found that there was no significant difference in resale prices for any of those 3 conditions. People will pay the same for new chips as they will for chips that were put into play a few dozen times. It takes a ton of play for them to actually wear down enough to lower their value. However, once that occurs (probably at least a thousand hours in play) they will drop dramatically in price, often losing 30 or 40% of their value had they not been played with.

This belongs in the "Things that are bullshit" thread.
Hey I’m just being honest, obviously exaggerating about the collecting dust part. But when you spend upwards of $4,5,6 bucks/chip to buy a set, for some of us that’s a lotta money and you might think about preserving your set. Plus there’s a number of people like that here else there wouldn’t be any mint/near mint condition chips that go up for sale all the time.

When it comes to mint, I guess it's people with many more thousand chips than they could ever use in a lifetime.
When it comes to near-mint, I guess it's people with some alternating sets, playing with civilised (or, just well-disciplined :D ) crews.

You wouldn't be so mad if he won Lucky for Life, now would you?

Play with them... I am always trying to find new reason to pull out a different set... Working on more label from Chris to get more sets in play. Most of my buddies actually like the feeling of Paulsons so why not play with them...

If I was just going to look at poker chips, then I would just hang up pictures of the chips that I like. Or better yet, buy sample sets of the chips that I like and put them in a display case to look at forever...even touch them once in awhile. But there is no way in hell that I'm gonna spend a bunch of money to just look at chip sets...nope. Seems so foreign to me to even consider it.

I've spent $4, $5, $6, even upwards of $15, $20, $25 per chip for some sets -- and hell yeah, it's a lotta money. But it's also ridiculous to tie up that kind of cash on something that is just eye candy to be viewed but not touched or used -- I can do that for a lot less using sample sets and marvelous pictures.

I'm not buying a high-priced automobile and letting it sit in the garage collecting dust -- afraid to drive it, or worrying about depreciation -- nor am I about to do the same with my high-end chip sets.

Poker chips are tools, meant to be used and appreciated for the fine tactile pieces of art that they are. If I can't find a way to put a set into play, I sell it..... to give somebody else the opportunity to put it into play and enjoy it.

Unless you're hosting every single night with heathen barbarians, your chips won't see any appreciable wear, and certainly not enough to cause significant depreciation. And I'm just being honest, too.

I did the "unthinkable" and dipped into retirement savings to buy my grail set.

No way in hell I would delay my retirement by a year just to have something sit on a shelf. To enjoy them, that extra year was worth it. I do love my job though, so there's that.

I also have other sets as well, and they all get table time. More sets to rotate through reduces the wear on any one set. Like everything else on PCF, the real solution in always MOAR CHIPS!

Epic collection. It's hard to be sure given they are so far away, buy I'd say my favourite sample is on the very bottom shelf of the second case from the top on the far right.

Haha I looove that movie. I bought something last year from Amazon and saw that signed picture (by the actress not Chevy) as a cheap addon and had to have it.

@BGinGA I was wondering who was going to let him know that $4-$6 a chip is pretty average for nice chips... grail chips you're looking at double digits easily, worst I paid was $37 a chip

$37/chip?!!?! Pr0n please omg
This is what we define as 'raping' someone during a purchase lol
I'll take pics when I get home, they're just PCA secondary 500s (I bought before the recent sale went up, sadly)
