I’m guessing it had something to do with money and getting bought out by GPI.

Because they weren't making money selling to the general public. They pretend it's about security etc but it all comes down to $s in the end.

Note, we are not the general public, we're a special breed of chip obsessed idiot for whom the $ is barely relevant.
