I've been waiting to jump into this and I'm not sure if the heat has gone down since the OP, but I thought I'd give my two cents.
As someone who is friends with TONS of people on this forum, TheChipBoard, PokerChipper and elsewhere I know a lot of you guys know who I am, what I do and who I'm basically associated with.
When Danny originally showed me the CapDash chips, I was blown away. At first, I won't lie, I was hesitant about it because there have been people in the hobby that try to fake chips sell them for high amounts of money and what not. Then I took some time to think about the chips themselves.
1. They're ceramic chips, so they'll always have that nipple thing on the side of them.
2. Actual TRKs never had recessed centers.
3. You can tell ceramic printing colors vs powder mixtures of what TR King actually used.
Those are just a few points and I've made videos talking about this stuff before. I've posted on TheChipBoard talking and trying to make newer or older people in the community to help them figure out if the chip is real or not. You can tell if you look closely, but sure, you can get screwed.
Danny himself got screwed thinking he bought an older Hacienda chip off
eBay that turned out to be one Rich Burgel's fake relabel chips on a Kings Crown $1k.
Anyways, Danny is making a little bit of money off the mold sure. The mold isn't public and you can only order the chips through Danny. Danny has always been for the community, the people and making it a fun hobby. You see him at the chip shows here in Vegas, he is a massive helper in his community in WI and more. I just spoke with him on the phone yesterday and I talk to him all the time, but he mentioned selling chips to someone. If he bought them for $2 per chip, he'll probably only sell the rack for $3 per chip. If the next person wants to sell them for higher he doesn't care. I'm just trying to explain what kind of a person he is because I know that there are a lot of people on here that don't like him, care about him or what it may be.
Tina will print basically whatever you want on a chip. China doesn't care. Does that introduce the possibility that fake or reproduction chips can be made, yes. Like I mentioned above, you have to be careful and mindful when you go to buy something that you think might be of higher value. If that's the case, ask for more pictures. If the chip has a recessed inlay, automatic fake. If it has a nipple on the side, automatic fake. It's really not that hard and you guys make it seem like it's such a struggle to identify things like that. If you're even more scared, ask for samples, get them in hands and compare them to actual TRKs.
I loved the introduction of CapDash chips because it gives the opportunity to get
TRK sets that most people will probably won't be able to afford. I know everybody loves leaded TRKs. With that in mind, of course the price goes up! Leaded chips minimum like $4 per chip at least. I sold a rack of solid red chips that sparkled in the sun for $400-450 whatever it was. Instant sell because people know what leaded TRKs are all about.
Why don't you see Mapes or Money Tree sets for sale? Because people know what they are worth, they're harder to find and there's only a number of sets out there that ARE NOT going to be broken up once they're put together. I sure wish I had a set, but I'm much younger than the median age on here. I got into this hobby after the Mapes chips were sold at my work, had I been here a year earlier I would've bought a set more than likely and still have it. I'm not jealous, I have a beautiful Starlite set, a Desert Sands Cabazon set I'm working on and also a El Cortez
TRK set. Two sets are hot stamped, that you'll never be able to replicate. The Starlites could potentially be replicated, but can't because again... TRKs from factory never had recessed centers. Even if they were, it's nothing like the original chips.
The ability to have a
TRK like set for around 50 cents a chip is the best idea ever. You get the mold, the feel, sound and more for a fraction of the price of an actual set. Paying around $250-300 for a 500 chip set I'd buy any day of the week! Let alone being able to create a fully custom set from scratch, something you'll love forever and really design to the fullest is a steal. And I get
CPC has the SmCrown and LgCrown molds, but to me they don't feel the same as original TRKs. I personally don't have the money to get a full custom
CPC SmCrown set as I'd like, same goes for LgCrown. So, CapDash chips seem like a really good way to go for myself if I wanted to get a set that I don't mind people throwing across the table, splashing the pot, shuffling for hours or what not.
Everyone has their thoughts and opinions about these chips. Don't hate them if you haven't tried them. Give it a chance.
