What's up with all these sales? (1 Viewer)

Yes. The Boat chips were shut down. Also there was another order to go with the BT chips (including an incredible Hitching Post set) that was shut down by Paulson who stated "These chips are not for you".

What? After they both got massive amounts of chips they were shut down, still a success, at least partially?

I heard this was the initial intention of the first Star chips... Huge buy to be sold for profit to the members here. Pharoahs v2.

I have no idea if that was the case, so I won’t speculate on that. I also had no problem paying a bit of a markup to get in on Star chips on the secondary market. I initially got into my Star chips at around $3/chip, and if they cost around $2/chip to make that is very reasonable. It has blown my mind that prices have gone upwards of $5/chip on basically all of them.

The last buy seemed different though (the Sunset chips), that one seemed like a pure money making venture. Especially so after all the pics were taken down. Maybe there were friendly back room deals made, which would be awesome, but selling sample sets at $10/chip is not passing them on to fellow PCF members in a friendly way.

The prices on all the chips that have come via buys from Paulson are not sustainable imo. Normal working folks can’t pay that kind of money for a set of chips, so they will mostly circulate amongst the wealthiest on this forum. I know I can no longer compete, and that basically kills the hobby for me. I’ll enjoy the chips I own now, and I’ve got some nice ones, but the buying will no longer work for me:(.

advise me if I'm wrong but each time these sets are made extras are ordered and listed with a considerable mark up to cover some of the initial cost, design work... whatever the case maybe. I hope it is not simply out of greed and lining pockets with other members money simply because they went part of the established long term groups that understandably form over time.

This isn't meant to be rude, but you are obviously new to this (and maybe a little/lot naive). How else do you explain markups of 500+% in some cases? That's not to cover initial cost...

Again I'm new, not trying to stir the pot at all. I have seen people get angry talking about past buys... @hdgeno great response... this whole time I have been thinking... all of those boat chips couldn't have been $6 - $7 per chip when they came around... I mean to be fair, supply and demand always plays a factor... can you fault someone for asking $6 a chip if that is what people are willing to pay... to new members all we can do is work up to those over time...

I was trying to be nice... I think we all feel the same way. Not here to make enemies sir!! But yes you are correct, thought I could brush the subject without raising hairs

There were no "extra" sets ordered for resale during the Star Boat buys. People bought chips that were supposed to be for their own use.

There were obviously a few people who agreed to the terms and rules (for lack of a better term) of the purchase that had absolutely no intention of keeping to their word. That goes for buying chips specifically for resale and not discussing the buy until it was determined how best to reveal the chips.

I won't associate or play cards with those people. They simply can not be trusted. Based on my experience with them it's well within their mental wiring to cheat and think it's OK.

These boat chips and brand new semi custom paulsons are like the CrAcK cocaine of the chipper world.

We all kinda got into this for similar reasons, we wanted some unique casino clays for our home games...or something along those lines... and because of rarity.. the “hunting” instinct sets in... and we hunt and eventually we pull the trigger and get a set of Paulsons. All of our sets are almost 100% unique, in size, setup and condition. At least that’s how it used to be. (Paulson fantasy sets excluded) and we had something to show off, our little piece of the salvaged casino clays that didn’t end up in a cement foundation.

These Boat chips and such are a different breed of the same hunt, more like the safari that the extremely wealthy people go on, where the safari guides drive you right up to a fierce lion and all but shoot the beautiful beast for you. It wasn’t really a hunt, was it?

I am in it for the hunt, like the bargains and the searching and the scoring, and uncovering my little unique piece of the leftover dead casino chip world.
And I eat what I catch.

All these recent sets are beautiful, amazing chips that the designers and owner should be proud of, but the fact that you have to erase the talk about them on this forum says a lot about them.

Hopefully one day I can afford to go on a safari with the boat chippers of the world. =) I probably would... but seriously, what else would there be to do after that, the hunt is over, done deal, game over.

Sorry to hear this @ChipEnvy. For the record, if I you ever want to invite me to a future boat buy 2.0, I promise to play by the rules.

I guess you need to get your info from people that will tell you the truth or were better informed. This is entirely wrong.

This forum has gotten weird, I swear there's like 8 people who can't post anything but this stuff. The exact same threads, the exact same posts, the exact same jokes, over and over and over.

I get wanting chips. I get wanting Paulsons. I definitely don't get most of the threads I read these days that have anything to do with either of those topics though. Either give it a try, on your own or in a group, or give it a rest for a day or two. It's like every other post is speculating on stuff posters only have 25% of the information on or are deciding what other adults should do for them that they aren't willing to do themselves.

There's got to be more than this to chipping.

For the sake of transparency, not only the original buy members made some profits off the boat chips. I know I’ve made a few bucks selling boat chips since I got into them for a really fair price. The biggest winner in my deals has been PayPal, who keeps more than the exchange rate on purchases and sales.

I also don’t begrudge anyone some profit after they originally took the risk. All boat chip buyers I’ve bought from were very fair. The BTP and SB buys were clearly geared more towards making some quick cash.

Great to see you around!

There still is.

Some don't want to let it go, so they drag out it back out like there is some way that it can be remedied. It can't. Boats have sailed, the circus has packed up, the sunset has gone down.

What kills me is that if there was some way that I could initiate a new semi-secret buy, I know that there are many I would trust and there are a few I wouldn't. Those that whine constantly would never be included - because they are obviously out just for themselves.

I love looking at the the GB/Non-GB, VIP group, or whateverthefuck you want to call them chips, but I've come to the realization that to me, they are the same as fantasy chips (Le Noirs, Avalons, etc.) and the only thing I want is casino chips.

Initially I was mad not to be asked to participate in any of the buys, but I realized that I wasn't as active as I thought I was - I've been around forever, but mainly just lurk.

I also realized that selling a grail set (Dunes, Ritz, etc.) to buy fantasy chips would have killed me in the long run.

To be honest, I'd have had a hard time not selling them for the markup that they've been getting...especially if I bought 2 to 10 times the amount I "really" need. Part of me dreads the hit some members are going to take IF Paulson ever does open up the vault...

At the end of the day, we all have different things we like about this silly hobby, and different criteria we use to determine what we each want to collect. I keep that in mind whenever a new buy pops up - I look at the pretty chippies, think of all the things I would have done differently, and then move on with my day.

Lately this hobby feels much more toxic than it ever has in the past. It isn't the GB chips (although they are a scapegoat), it's the jealousy of some "newbs", some butthurt from "veterans" and an unwillingness for anyone to take a moment an consider someone else's perspective.

The boat chip debacle splintered the forum. I doubt folks will make the same mistake.

I hope you’re not insinuating that I whine constantly...if it comes across that way I need to learn how to articulate correctly, as that is not my goal at all. I believe I’ve played it very cool when it comes to all the different buys, mostly keeping my nose clean so I could eventually buy some of them if given the chance.

There have been a few times where I’ve posted some thoughts, most of which were on the mark if I’m not mistaken. This forum has changed to some degree in the last two years, but it’s far from all bad. I have many great interactions with members across the spectrum, and plan to keep it that way.

No man, you're cool.

As for "splintering" the forum, you obviously are new. Chiptalk was constantly divided.

A very close friend once told me "You hate with the same amount of passion that you love with". There can be no denying that the passion for the love of chips is extremely high around here. So when when we get upset, the anger boils over with the same amount of passion.

Eventually, you have to decide if you want to carry that anger or get back on the happy road. If you can't get over it, then throw my house keys at me and leave.

My friend did, and everybody is happier now.
