We call it pop, not soda (3 Viewers)

Welcome to the community !

Hi, guys !

I'm from Michigan and new here.

Coming from board games and now trying to widen my horizon with the best cards + chips possible in my budget.

Thanks for being here, I already learned a lot.

Welcome! Birmingham, MI here...

Welcome to PCF! Missouri is a steady mix of people who call it soda, some pop and still others soda pop. We even have some who call it “going for a coke”, like our friend from Texas. Depends whether you’re closer to St. Louis, Kansas City or Springfield for the most part. But, they all work for me. Maybe, because I moved around so much as a kid. 🤷‍♂️

Coke or Pepsi?
McDonald’s fountain Coke > everything else.
Pepsi can > Coke can.
Coke bottle > Pepsi bottle.

What up fellow mitten man! Where about are you from? I grew up in up in Ogemaw county but went to the city.

Stopped calling it pop when I got off the peninsula for a bit and saw the rest of the world.

Soda>Pop all day

Thank you, all !

I'm from Downriver Michigan.

But I'm born and raised in Lower Saxony, Germany.

I came to the States, because I got married to an US gal.

Yes, I know Euchre, BUT I played it only 1x time so far, with some Michiganders.

I'm more used to german card games and some italian ones.

Hopefully, I will play some Rook this weekend. (Kentucky Derby)

In Germany, you would call pop/soda/coke/pepsi, just "Limonade". Doesn't matter if it's an fountain drink, can or bottle.

Wiktionary says:
  • On the East Coast and Southwest of the United States, as well as in Wisconsin, Hawaii, and Alaska, 'soda pop' is abbreviated to 'soda', such as "May I have a soda?" Some, however, still use the term 'soda pop'.
  • In the Midwest, except for Wisconsin, in the Northwestern United States, soda pop is usually abbreviated to pop, such as "Do you have any pop?"
  • In the Midland United States, 'soda pop' is abbreviated to either 'soda' or 'pop' depending on the region.
  • In the Southern United States, 'soda pop' is sometimes abbreviated as 'soda' or 'pop', but is primarily referred to as 'coke' as a form of genericized trademark. Elsewhere, 'coke' specifically refers to the brand Coca-Cola.
  • In Canada, 'soda pop' is most often abbreviated as 'pop', but it is not rare to see it abbreviated to 'soda' either. Manitobans in particular frequently use 'soda' in addition to 'pop', while English-speaking Québécois primarily use 'soft drink' or sometimes 'soda', rarely using 'pop'.
Tonic means only "tonic water", and must contain quinine:

"A carbonated beverage containing quinine, originally used as a prophylactic against malaria, and now used as a soft drink or as a mixer in gin and tonic and other cocktails."

Welcome!

In Texas, it's all called Coke. Sprite is a flavor of Coke. Pepsi is a flavor of Coke. Root beer is a flavor of Coke.
IT CALLED BIG O, JFC

Welcome to PCF! In Indiana we call it pop. :)

That explains a lot about Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics fans. Oh, wait -- doesn't Boston have a hockey team too?
I hate hockey.
You can badmouth the teams with the most Super Bowl titles and most NBA championships at your own peril.
This is not the week to defend the Red Sox

Whiskey + splash of name your drink = coke.

Careful how you order.

Many chips to cover your tab
