Going to vegas in a couple weeks for my birthday. Will be staying at the Aria but was wondering if games change based on the day of the week. I arrive on Wednesday but didn't know if I should wait until thursday or friday to play based on other players skill level/action?

How early should I get on the wait list? I have heard that the wait times can be long.

Also, what rooms do you guys recommend in general? Do certain rooms tend to be softer than others?

The big rooms all have action all the time. Play when and where you want.

Generally the best time to play is the evening and late into the night. More players, more players drinking for more games and more action. Daytime games generally have less action.

Aria is close to 4 major rooms so you have a good selection - Aria, Bellagio, Caesars, Horseshoe (formerly Bally's). Aria seems to have long waits - don't know why. Bellagio has the most regular grinders I think. Games are generally a little softer at Horseshoe and Caesars. Softness is primarily just a matter of the table you end up at. That's the great thing about Vegas - lots and lots of tables to choose from.

Get the Bravo Poker app on your phone. It has a live list of how many tables are running at each Casino. Also provides phone numbers for poker rooms so you can call ahead to get on the list. I think most places only keep you on the list 1 hour, maybe 2 hours so that's the farthest you can call ahead.

Aria is a great room. Wait lists won’t be horrific if you’re in there early afternoon.

best part about playing cards in vegas is that if you find yourself at a boring table with no action or a bunch of mis-regs, just rack up and find yourself another table. You can throw a stone at 50 other low limit games.

All great advice from everyone so far. If you have the time, try to visit at least two different rooms or more. At the very least you'll have something to compare after your trip.

My first poker experience in Vegas was at the Mirage and now it only lives in my memories.

I only use bravo during WSOP for registrations. I prefer Poker Atlas for finding daily tournaments and the cash game stakes you're looking for

Call in to reserve a spot then check in at the poker room when you get there so they know you're there and move you from the call list to waiting. Day of the week and time doesn't matter, games are always going.

I stay at Aria so I just walk to the poker room and look at the board, sign up for the tables that you want to play. Ask them how long they think the wait will be. Games are softer (nittier) there due to many tourists and convention people just playing for the experience. Make sure to order food from Posh Burger or Lemongrass before they close. Otherwise you're stuck with sandwiches from Patisserie, not that it's a bad thing but the other places are better.

I would also check out Wynn, the WPT Championship is there.

Thanks for all the replies! Ended up playing three sessions; Aria, MGM Grand and Caesars Palace. Aria had a very nice room and action was good. MGM grand was the worst of the three rooms i played. Chairs were uncomfortable but action was good and the 1/2 game has an uncapped buy-in. Caesars palace had a nice room but my table had some regs and was super grindy. Hindsight I should have table changed but oh well. Overall a good trip for being new to live poker I finished up $400 for the weekend.

Nice, can't complain when you book a win. When is your next trip out?

I remembered my MGM experience last year was mediocre as well. Just a bunch of OMC and two 1/2 game open so not much to choose from. The vibe was lacking compared to the other rooms like Aria and Bellagio. I don't like to seat change or table change either.. might be an ego thing or I'm just lazy but I think its +EV to switch when I feel like I'm the fish at the table.

At Caesar's, I've had great tables and a table full of regs. As you say, table change is the way to go. Or room change - nice thing about that area, you can walk to another room under 10 minutes.

Highly recommend you give Horseshoe a try if you get back out there. It's a really nice room with a casual vibe - just seems a little more mellow than the other 3 you played.

Last time I was in Vegas, the dealer and guys at my table at Horseshoe were saying MGM was the best action game in town after midnight. So much variation in players showing up, you just never know.
