After running into several different chips not fitting inside the 39mm air-tites, I became curious about the difference in diameters between the various molds that are out there. This is no where near a comprehensive list of all the molds that are out there, but it's all the molds I could find in my collection. Enjoy...

TRK scrown mold chips - I was pretty amazed by how consistent all of my old school mint TRK chips are. The newer TRKs (made from the mid 80s onward) are a hair smaller. Perhaps the difference is with the leaded vs non-leaded chips? Either way, the old school leaded TRKs are pretty much all 38.91mm +/- 0.02mm, which also happens to be the tolerance of my digital calipers. So there is quite literally no statistically significant discernible difference at all among my sampling of old school TRKs. Pretty awesome! And just one more reason why TRKs reign supreme.

Paulson THC mold - a little more variability with these, but still pretty good. The one on the right might be a C&J chip, but I'm not certain.

All your CPC-values perfectly match my own measurements - to be expected though. (y)
Whereas when viewing the microscopic mold pics over here I'm not as inclined to take them as overly strong reference. Tendencies are pretty solid but there seems to be some variation in photos of recent sets ...

Would you mind measuring the recess diameter of the scroll mold?

The scroll mold doesn't have a recess (FDL is the only CPC mold I can think of that has one), but if you're just looking for the diameter of the center, here's a pic. It looks like it's about 23.8mm.

I love all this analysis, but I wonder how much it actually means, in this case. Aren't the edges of the chips lathed after they come out of the molds? So wouldn't that affect the diameter of each batch, independent of the mold?

I have a batch of CDM $5s (mustard base) which appear to be a hair under 39mm, whereas all the THCs measured by the OP are ~.1-.3 over 39...

I never noticed this until I mixed them in racks with some other THCs. It’s not a huge difference, but when racked perfectly it’s apparent that they are a tiny bit narrower.

Just wondering if this is a common variation, or specific to CDMs?
