About to start building a cash set for a homegame. Normally don’t have more than $1000 in play at any one time. Instead of buying a set, I was thinking about just buying a variety of $1 chips at an assortment of casinos. For example, go to Bellagio and get $100 in $1s, go to Caesars and do the same. Do this a few times until you get 10 sets of 100. Can always cash the chips back in and it makes it kinda fun. Has anybody done anything like this? Would love to see a full set. Any downsides that I am not anticipating?

this is an excellent idea. Surprised more chippers don't do this already. I wouldn't call them downsides, but there are a few things to consider. Condition of most live casino chips are used. If you don't mind a little wear on the chips, then its no biggy. Another is just the filth that is on most chips. Be prepared to clean all the chips really well to get all the nastieness off them. As for getting the chips, most poker rooms shouldn't be a problem. It's tougher to get chips out of casinos that don't have a poker room. Main cages don't sell chips, so you have to get them by buying into table games and grinding them while pocketing the 1's. It is definitely doable and a fun project. It will take some time and hustle, but worth it imo. And you're right, best part is, they are good as gold. Cash em in for face value whenever you are done with them.

@Godzilla28 and maybe a few others I have seen have what you described. If you’re playing $1/2 you’re going to want some $5’

I wouldn't call it a downside but the obvious one would be dirty stacks. :D We did play a bigger game once and the green Tropicana $25s would get lost in the mess. So we had to switch to blaze starburst chips mid game to prevent dirty stacks. Good luck with building your set.
