Hi everyone, I’m in the market for a new set of chips. As of right now I only have 1 set of poker chips & I am looking to upgrade from it. The set I own are a 500 PC Tournament Series that I purchased years ago from Discount Poker shop. I wanted to ask everyone’s opinion because I’m sure many of y’all own the sets that I’ve narrowed down. The sets I have my eyes on are Majestic’s, Lucky Monaco Casino, & the Lucky Casino. Of all 3 the Majestic’s are my favorite because they resemble Aria’s poker chips. Of course, later on I plan on purchasing another set which will be better than these 3, but as of now I’m going with what I can afford. Y’alls opinion is greatly appreciated!

Get samples before purchasing in numbers!
The Majestics (and the 43mm Royals) are considered to be probably the best "china clays" available today.
Edit: they can also be custom-labelled by Apache.

If those are the only three you are looking at, go with the Majestics. They are the only ones in your grouping there are are actual casino weight. While metal slugged chips work, once you go with something that gets the weight right you won't go back to metal slugged chips again.

Oof. Everyone will tell you to buy samples.

If you're going to start with China Clays (which is absolutely fine), maybe put out a wanted ad and see if anyone has what you're looking for on hand. The moment you buy these their value will plummet, as normally noone will want to pay full price for those. Still not a bad way to go if you plan on buying one set and just playing with that for a year or more.

I would also take a look around first. There's a sample set for beginners going around. Not sure where it is, @Forty4 do you by chance still have that going? (I'd also like to donate or buy some chips for it, since it seems like everyone and their mother needs to check it out).

By taking a look around you may find some other options that are at the same price point, or a little higher, and provide way better product or held value. If you do tourneys, you can spend just an extra $250ish and get something like the WSOP tourney set below
https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/presidents’-day-weekend-sale.51696/.

I just sold BJ roulettes at .35 a chip that could be relabeled https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/6-jack-roulette-chips-35-a-rack.60210/.

Way more importantly, check out the chips below. These are full customized CCs that are available for around or LESS than the majestics. If you're a new chipper some designs may not speak to you, but there's more. https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...om-artwork-group-buy-us-can-cards-mold.59277/

Big group buy that some of us here are doing, orders going in this week. If I were you, I would ABSOLUTELY consider this route. If you have any questions about the above, please don't hesitate to reach out. This isn't a decision you want to rush, but it's also not one that you want to waste $250 on and decide that you want to go a completely different direction in 2 months.

I dont think china clays are a good investment. They arent really durable and are also smelly. Id rather use slugged chips, dice or other plastics - Bud Jones, Matsui, or Abbiati.
From my experience, Milanos do smell; Majestics don't.
Anyway, he 's not talking about investment for the time being. Let's not press people into buying vintage Porsches or Ferraris upon joining the forum "'cause they 're a good investment". People might be happy with less.
Let him get his samples and smell for himself:)

While I agree that china clays are not all that good, looking at the price point Majestics fall into is making me wonder if this guy isn't a candidate for ceramics? Hum ............. @Texican_007 check out www.brpropoker.com they sell sample packs of ceramics they make you might find something you like there.

I am not saying spend more thats why I included dice in my recommendations alongside slugged chips. Ceramics are also durable. I just dont like cc chips in terms of value. People are better off spending more money OR less.

I’ll definitely check this out. Thanks for the help!

@Jeff, I know this has been brought up quite a bit in these threads, but I don't know if we ever actually asked a Mod. Any chance to get an overview written up and stickied somewhere or used as a resource? (Not asking you guys to do the work, we could put something together, pass it around for review, etc.)

I know of course people normally start trying to tell people, don't buy china clays, do this not that, and most of it is personal opinion they're pushing on them.

But if we had some objective information, regarding chips, price fluctuations, vendors, etc., it might be nice to be able to point new chippers to that instead of the same song and dance with every, "Hi I'm new here, thinking of this, what do you guys think about those?" We have a glossary, but I literally don't see any other resource useful to new chippers.

(I also have no idea which mod to tag with something like this, or if it should be a PM, sorry)

I may be in the extreme minority here at PCF, but I won't consider value of chip when I make a chip purchase. I want chips I am happy with that look good and I can be happy to put in play on my table with my friends. Chip value is meaningless to me.

Ceramics are indeed considered more durable than china clays, but it takes time and experience to choose what and from whom to buy.
China clays from Apache is a guaranteed, easy and fast off-the-shelf solution, including with custom labels, if desired.

Any info is good info & all opinions are appreciated. I’m novice in this poker chip game compared to y’all.

I dont mean value in the collector sense. I mean value as in getting good value for your money. Dice chips are 50 bucks and they will last a lifetime. China clays look pretty when oiled but they dont hold up well to use. Recipes n such change so YMMV.

Ceramics, dice, slugged, and plastic chips are good value because they dont flake/chip/break easily.

In terms of durability, clays, particularly Paulsons, are a pretty awful deal too. The can chip/brake/warp, and must be shielded from extreme temperatures at all times.
With just durability in mind, you don't ever bother about anything else than fully plastic, be it filthy-cheap slugged ones like "Dice" or high-end ones (Matsui, Abbiati etc)

If you want to live dangerously, there is a sample set of Paulson clays of various molds and conditions that are available for free evaluation. Just sign up for them in the thread near the top of the Poker Chip General section. Be warned: if you like what's there, you might never want to consider China Clays or ceramics again....

While definitely a bargain and an very good choice, note that these are not china clays. These are customized ceramics.

Believe me if there wasn’t a budget, it would be Paulson’s all day lol

Dibs

Also - have been planning to write up a PCF welcome thread. Working with a few other members on it

Make sure to get people not in your circle, so that you get an outside/opposite point of view to look over it. Doesn't help if it's an echo chamber. (just in case you haven't)
Yah would run it by some peoples first
