Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is the difference between TRK and the CPC Small Crown mold? Visually they look the same.

The real TRKs have a different clay formula which results in a different feeling chip.

CPC Scrowns have their own clay formula and while it’s great, most feel not quite on par with TRK

but just by looks it would be hard to tell the difference.

The original crown mold chips were made by TR King. The molds used to make those chips were later sold to a couple of poker chip collectors after TR King stopped making chips. Those collectors later went on to purchase the American Standard Molding chip-making equipment and molds, consequently starting CPC and making new chips that were essentially the same as the old ASM chips. However, ASM and TRK had different manufacturing equipment and processes, so the new CPC chips were quite different from the old TR King chips... and, in fact, CPC couldn't use the TRK crown molds because of those differences.

A while later, CPC managed to use the TRK crown molds to produce new molds which could be used with the existing CPC equipment and processes. David Spragg, one of the people behind CPC, wrote about that here.

But that means that the new crown mold chips from CPC are essentially ASM chips, and not TRK chips. They use the ASM equipment, processes, and materials. All they have in common with the original TRK chips are the shapes that are molded into the chips. However, those shapes are in fact identical, because the shapes were created from the same mold (indirectly) rather than being re-created from scratch.

The only thing in common that they share is visually they both have the scrown mold.

Make it to one of my games and you'll be able to feel the difference. I have a full, playable set of TRK Scrown chips and a handful of samples of on the CPC scrown mold.

Let me revise that: David Spragg somehow modified the existing TRK molds in order to make them work with the existing ASM/CPC equipment. I don't think David has publicly described the nature of those modifications, as chipmakers (including CPC) prefer to keep the fine details of the chip-making process a secret. I suspect the modifications were something along the lines of removing the cups from the TRK molds and securing them into the "shoe" (the frame) of some existing or newly-fabricated CPC molds. But that's just a guess. I'm also guessing that David didn't have any new cups manufactured, and there could be a couple of reasons for that - the master die to make new cups might be lost or destroyed or unusable, for example. But again, that's just a guess.

One significant difference is the availability. You can have pretty much whatever you want made by CPC on the scrown mold but since TRK stopped producing years ago, you can only pick up TRKs that have already been made.

True, casino TRKs have a lovely feel due to the lead included clay formula but you're looking at paying prices that are comparable to CPC level 5 chips and up with some chips commanding prices way more than the most expensive CPC chip.

Thanks for all the background, always amazed at the knowledge base here. Interesting background on the molds.

I always see the TRK posts here and am building out a custom set through CPC. Originally started with the A Mold but then saw small crown and it clicked that it was almost exact to the TRK design.

Don't forget about large crowns! A great and underappreciated mold - also available in both TRK and CPC!
True, I do like the Large Crown also because it has the outer ring.

I ordered a mold sample set from CPC to check out the feel of each. I also just completed a set of Rounders CSQ, just need to be able to host some events to get them broken in.

How did you get a color sample with colors labeled, with inlay on the s-crown mold? Is this still available?
I got my set shortly after CPC announced that they would be offering the mold. Contact CPC to see if they are still an available option.

is it safe to say thickness will be off as well? I have five plastic chip spacers per hundred TRKs in a 1000 chip case that came with my ASMs .
(the spacers are catalox, but I imagine that's for a different thread)

WOW, that's GOLD RIGHT THERE!!

I played with @wonderpuddle Jack Rabbit Slim’s CPC scrowns this past weekend and was thoroughly impressed. The colors and feel were better than I expected. I think the top tier older TRKs with shaped inlays and more weight are still on the Mount Olympus of chipping, but those CPCs were as good as 90% of the TRKs I’ve seen and handled.
