Regarding the bolded, the thinking seems somewhat contradictory. Doesn't it show more skill to reach the "plateau", ie. put yourself in a position to win, twice than to only get there once and happen to have luck assist you to the win?

I think field size has a lot to do with it. In a 10-player field, the 2/3 performance far outshines the 1/5 showing. In larger fields -- where 5th place may be in the top 10% of finishers -- I think it's much closer.

True but I think you slightly redefined your definition of “plateau”.

Defining it as a top 10% finish, in a field of 50 we are talking more a 4th and 5th place finish vs a 1st and 9th.
