My Pharaohs have been cleaned, oiled, and in play for almost a year now. They sometimes tend to slip off stacks. Nothing crazy but it still happens. I feel like maybe it could use a very light sanding. What's a safe way to go about this without ruining my chips? Maybe I can sand down a barrel and see how much I like it.

Simple to do. A few swipes on some medium grit sandpaper and they will be noticeably less slippery.

Hey Rainy_Trails, I was having the same problem with my Apache Pharaohs, couple rotations on 1200 grit worked really well. The sandpaper took out the high spots and made them stack easier as well. It also gave a slightly more “worn” look but this is okay because the Pharaohs already come with a pre-worn style (bit thinner than Paulson and beveled edges unlike mint Paulsons) Be warned this is an extremely tedious process and the chips will probably need a fresh coat of oil as well. It took me several hours and many many sheets of sandpaper to do my 600 chip set but Harbor Freight sells large sheets of 1200 grit, 5 in a pack in the ~$4 range. As others have said you could always just get better chips, which is my plan but for the time being I just don’t have the funds to put together a whole set. CCs are still gonna be better than a majority of home game sets non-chippers are use to. Good luck In whatever you decide to do and I’m here to help if you need any more info on the topic.

thanks so much !

It's unclear to me how to accurately rank various categories of sanded chips in the chip grading hierarchy.

Where do 'sanded but unplayed', 'lightly sanded', 'wet-sanded with 7000-grit', and 'rock tumbled using sand medium' all fit in the list below?

-- mint/new
-- near-mint
-- excellent condition
-- good condition
-- used condition
-- casino-used
-- bicycle tires
-- thin wafers

You can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig.

I think you should save that money and time you’ll use on sanding and save up for a better set of chips.

Sanded prefix that signifies a drop of one category?

Seems to me you have a temporary minor inconvenience solved in time by saving for a better set. Just put up with it.

Yeah you’re so right. In my process, I was thinking of some method to test the slippery-ness of chips. Haha maybe i’ll come up with some weird device for funsies and post it on here

I just don’t think I’ll ever spend more than .49c per chip — at least not for a long time.
It seems like the price jump from china clays to higher tier chips is exponential. Let’s say I could afford $1 per chip. What kind and what specific chips would that open my budget up to?

*side note, the slippery chips isn’t a huge inconvenience. I’m just experimenting with the idea

Around .50 per chip gets you into Majestics or Royals which I think are a step up from your current set, and for less than that you can get ceramics of many different kinds from the Tina vendors or a group buy, again a step up and a chance at full customization.

what's tina vendors?

@justincarothers better known as Broken Arrow. Look in the vendor forum for him. Great deals there.
Lmao dude I am happy with my set. Fast forward, I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on the current tina group buy. I forgot about this thread, and it's become clear that you have pushed me down the tina cliff! Good thing though. Those chips are sick. I'll be getting a sample soon before I make my decision

Sorry, not sorry.
