Thoughts on having a set with chips in varying condition? (1 Viewer)

Hi All!

I was thinking about putting a specific cash set together and was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on a set with varying chip conditions. In this case, each denom would be in the same condition (i.e. all of the ones would be in the same condition, all of the 5's in the same condition) but the $1 chip I plan on using is not really available in minty condition while the others are or could be (although it will be a tough one to piece together in general).

If there are varying conditions I prefer if the condition of the chip increases as the denoms increase.

After putting together a set of Jack's I don't think I could mix a set of mint/new chips with used chips (maybe only a few of the top denoms being new).

This. In a tourney set mostly. I like that the beat up chips are removed for nicer chips with color ups.

Cash sets I prefer to be equal across the board. I have a well worn mixed set with nothing but bike tires but it sort of tilts me when I have a cash set and the fives are by far the worst of the group, even though that's how it typically is at the casino.

I voted no. The exception would be a set that is all from one casino. For example, say the Tropicana set has mint 100s but mostly used 1s, obviously it makes sense to keep all the chips together as they are from the same casino.

If you are building a mixed set then I am strongly opposed.

Thanks for the replies so far! For a little more context I'm looking to build a Nevada Club TRK set and planning for this to take a pretty long time . The 1s I want to use are definitely in used condition but I know pretty much every other denom exists out in the world in excellent condition.

My concern is thickness and stacking. Worn chips can be significantly thinner than less worn chips. There’s nothing worse than cutting checks against another stack and

I have an Empress cash set with varying degrees of wear across denoms. All the individual denoms are similar wear. I think I works fine. You just always stack like denoms against each other.

For me, you take what you can get. Sometimes there's not a minty chip to be had.

I like to have the same condition, but when it's not possible, then mix is ok

Half my Riverside $1s are mint and the other half are...not. Not even close. Like a full chip shorter in stacks. But what do you expect? They’re 55 years old.

Yes, I prefer all my chips to be the same condition, but you gotta work with what you got.

Yes, the problem is less remarkable if the denoms are similar. Agreed that you live with what you got. My custom set isn’t perfect as far as stacks, and it annoys me then I have to break down a barrel to double check it. I put depends on the set, and really mean “depends on the degree”
