Things that make you say hmmm... or ask why? (1 Viewer)

Regarding artificially inflating chip prices to recoup shipping costs...doesn't this community often speak of market value, and the correct price being what someone is willing to pay? And if so, is the price really inflated artificially? Or are the chips (if sold) worth that price to the buyer?
From what I see, not much sells over here, or at least instasells. If it doesn’t sell at all, they move it to PCF where it sits for weeks or months.

Here’s an opinion, though: If I as a EU citizen buy from within the EU, I would completely expect that the price of shipping from the original US owner is added to the EU sellers price. A part of the value of EU chips is that they are located in the EU.
I don’t disagree with this aspect. For sure, get back what you paid. But then there’s the issue of extremely lower demand in the EU compared to the US. I know it’s impossible, but as your own isolated area, why wouldn’t the EU try and reset their market. Initial buyer takes on additional costs or just brings them back during travels and passes them off at normal prices. Would increase trade (buying and selling over there), probably making buyers more comfortable bringing chips into EU knowing they can move em (but I get that this takes everyone to buy in and isn't feasible). FWIW between the move and three subsequent US trips, I either sold or helped someone bring over about 300 racks total.

This would be great, but it's more along the lines of "PCF community working for the greater good", which would be awesome.

My question was more along the lines of whether or nor one can, from an economical viewpoint, consider the prices being artificially inflated because someone paid a premium receiving them (shipping, import taxes), and is reluctant to sell at a loss. From a supply and demand perspective, I guess you can say that the US supply got lower. But if someone buys them anyway, then the demand was strong enough and the price was, in that sense, "correct".

(FYI I am way out of my comfort zone here)

A chips value is its value regardless of the shipping cost.

My wife sometimes asks for a $100 or so if I spend some of by bankroll on chips. I don't count that bribe as part of the cost of the chips lol.

I consider shipping cost and any possible tax as rake. And it's not like it costs nothing to ship within EU either... If a chip normaly cost 2$ plus shipping in north america, that is what it should cost here as well.

Because we can't have any nice things

When you need about 20-30 sugar free halls menthol per day just to keep a cough in control during conference calls. And it turns out sugar free halls have similar body effects to sugar free haribo gummy bears.
And sugar free Jolly Ranchers. When our Boy Scouts go camping and get backed up/“nervous”, we gave them a handful of those to “calm them down”. Works every time.

Here is a thread for those things make you say hmmm or just ask the question, WHY?

I'll start it off with a small pet peeve that makes me question why.

When a new for sale thread comes out and the posting member posts chips for sale at $X.xx but then say "first dibs goes to @xxxxxx".

Why? Wouldn't you just pm that person and say, "hey I know you dibs on these chips. I was getting ready to post them for sale but you have first shot." That would effectively honor their dibs and you wouldn't have to a waste a for sale post. They say nothin you post a for sale thread!!!
I'm guilty of this but I've done it because I've taken all the time to put together the sales thread and I don't feel like waiting for the person to respond. I don't want to break my word about giving dibs but I also don't want to wait to post the thread. If the amount dibsed = the amount that's available, then I'd probably wait.

Rant: The only time chips are MINT is when they have never been touched by human hands, and placed into boxes in Mexico. Minty is usually a type of TEA, not a chip description. Minty is also not Flamingo $1 chips you harvested from the cage. I personally don’t use EITHER Mint or Minty, not only is that subject to opinion, it’s false advertising.

If you had to use 1 word to describe chips that came from say… TCR… secondary chips that were never used by the casino, placed in a chip box by Jim and sent to you… what would that 1 word be?

Depends, if they were dumped and shipped in metal drums (HSI), the term mint shouldn't apply.

TBH, the terms mint and minty have lost their meaning. When you see it used in ads it now means 'I think these chips look great and I want the top end of market value for them'.

I like @jpietrella “uncirculated”
But it really depends on one thing. Reminds me of this

“I could guarantee you all day long, but we both know a guarantee is only as good as the man who writes it.”

Big Tom Callahan

"If you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time."

Big Tom Callahan's son

Seriously though, I try to not use "mint". I've bought Boat chips from Mexico and called them "new" or "uncirculated". I'll usually say "excellent" and follow that up with plenty of pictures.

My view is that when I’m buying chips, I’m buying them to play with them. So, dead mint, uncirculated, unplayed, unoil-barreled - none of the crap matters to me, as long as the edges look sharp, that’s good enough. But as a seller, you have to be careful, because some buyers are picky.

Limit poker :cool

Edit: i understand pot limit
I’m sure this has been discussed/debated elsewhere, but have you tried playing limit? If you want to say limit holdem is boring, I’d have a hard time arguing with you. But if you haven’t played a night of fixed limit mixed games, you should try it.

Yeah, I'm in the same camp. I'm planning on using chips I buy. Even though I haven't hosted forever. As long as they don't have crater sized chips/dings, I'm ok. But no bike tires.

As a seller, I try to avoid descriptions of the chips. I try to let the pics speak for the condition of the chips.
