The Watch Thread (1 Viewer)

Paid a visit to the Hamilton Boutique Store in Lancaster, PA this weekend. The shop is blocks away from the old original factory, and showcases every model of Hamilton watch and lots of movie memorabilia from films where Hamilton watches played a role. During World War II, the company made over 4 million field watches for U.S. soldiers, including one for my own father.

Several display cases in the store showcase the company history, and enshrine early railroad watches form the 1800s, a Navy ship's clock, two WWII-era military field watches and watches from several movies. They have the actual Hamilton Bolton worn by Harrison Ford in the last Indiana Jones movie and an early Hamilton Ventura that was a favorite of Elvis Presley.

Hamilton are great watches at great price points. I wore a paneurop as my daily for 5 years. The indices faded but otherwise no a problems

I don’t think that’s a “good” price. But more importantly are you sure you want to gift your wife a 40 year old tiny Rolex? Like. For that price you could get her a brand new one. Women’s Rolexes are excess supply vs demand.

31-35mm is normal dial size for women’s watches today.

She definitely has a smaller wrist. I went to check it out in person and wasn’t put off by the size. I guess for me I really wanted it to be all yellow gold. From my understanding price goes way up the newer you get… understandably

Is the bracelet solid gold? I doubt it for that price. A gold bracelet is 20-25k by itself. If you’re just looking for gold tone I feel you have better options at that price point.

I used to be able to say get a $600 Chinese tungsten clone but those pathways are increasingly not available.

it all solid yellow 18k gold. Prob around 90-100 grams of gold total if I had to guess

Local jewelry store asked me if I wanted this. 1987 26mm Ladies yellow gold Datejust box and papers. Model number 6917 I think he said. Has a tight band. They were asking $8,750. Too much? Good deal? Talk to me. Would be gift to wife.

Good price for the seller.

I would only consider it if it’s a birth year watch for your wife.

Can buy a brand new Cartier for less.

I don’t think an $8k watch is going to have 90-100g of gold content.

3 ounces of gold alone is $12k today.

So if that’s what you’re thinking I wouldn’t buy it for that reason. The case might be 18k gold but the bracelet is going to be plated steel.

Yeah was just a guess on how much it weighs, but it definitely is all solid 18k. Nevertheless, it wasn’t an investment because I would make money off the gold. More of a hedge for retaining value.

I have a question. Has anyone ever handled a faux Rolex? Curious what they feel like.

I’ve handled several. They all look really good. The cheaper ones you can tell on inspection. The best ones are almost indistinguishable even when you have both in hand. The two below I included pics of are not top tier.

It probably does contain some amount of gold but I doubt the jeweler is dumb enough to sell something that is worth more if they melt it down.

I weighed some of my “Rolexes”

Even the stainless 40(?)mm clocks in at 126g.

Tungsten weighted will be much closer to gold.

Stupid display. Says 170g.

Bottom line I wouldn’t judge the metal content or the value therein by just heft.

Is that a substantial weight and overall decent watches? My citizen is my daily driver and I have an old 80’s styled Armetron (lol) which is my in the yard timepiece.

Even though my wife doesn’t understand, I plan on adding a few watches over the next year or so. Especially if I run well on Fridays.

Anything 100g+ is going to be substantial. I don’t notice anything when I’m wearing a 70g case. Matter of personal preference. If you want to get started learning about these “Rolexes” just visit the Reptime subreddit. It’s definitely more difficult these days to source them fyi. I maintain they’re a great way to try out different looks and styles without a massive commitment. Just don’t expect them to have the longevity of the real thing. Like Tinas.

Went to LA yesterday to fix an oopsie I made. The independent watchmakers available are world class.

Rodeo drive is such a dream to walk through. Wish I had more time to look around. Had a blast at MB&F.

Got a nice parting present.
Alright...I've waited a week and it's killing me. When is the reveal for the parting present? (:

It was just a nice hat unique to Beverly Hills location and extremely nice catalog. I’m shopping for a big milestone present for myself in a few years so looking very broadly. MBF says they have a total of 1600 customers worldwide. I don’t know that I’m cool enough to be #1601. But I am looking for something crazy. For some reason Chronoswiss Purple Rain really appeals to me  :ROFLMAO:
