Just read recently that the Mirage was sold and will become The Hard Rock, along with the famous volcano being torn down.

Can’t believe I didn’t hear about this sooner. Very sad. Was probably my favorite place to play and the first place I stayed In Las Vegas. Glad I was able to see Siegfried and Roy many years ago. Loved their poker room, too.

Sad to see it go.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I've always found the Hard Rock brand to be completely fake, like a gold plated turd. Don’t know why. The whole brand just rubbed me the wrong way. This definitely doesn’t help change that.

Imagine a giant guitar next to Caesars. I imagine a giant eyesore where the volcano once was.

The writer of the article does a great job describing the feelings.

Is the hotel really going to be as big as the artists render? That is insanely huge

Regardless of the size, there will be a time when the cage does not mind selling the soon to be useless $1 chips. When that time comes (not sure of the exact timing) someone should show up with a large wheelbarrow and lots of $ to buy them all.

Maybe there are more recent re-brandings that I am not thinking of, but the last big one that I recall was when the old Hard Rock in Vegas changed its name. I know all about the whole destroying chips thing in Nevada, but what about all the live $1's the last day they are live? Can't be too hard to buy $1 chips from the cage on that day, right?

Yes, this makes sense to me. I've seen this same question asked in other threads though, and I haven't heard anyone reply back saying "Yes, in the week before the XXX casino rebranding the cage would gladly give you 2 racks of $1 chips."

I’d be afraid they get a message from management to tighten up to prevent that from happening. Accounting wise iirc I’d think they’d want to get out as many chips as they can given they’ll be unredeemable in the near future. Hope they don’t care and someone can grab ALL the $3s, they’re gorgeous.

@Potsie1 already has all of their $3's I think :p

I feel the same way. When I lived in Vegas, the Mirage was my favorite strip casino to hang out in. It was still my go-to place after I moved and would come back to visit. Aside from the sportsbook and poker room, the deli was the main reason I went there all of the time. I was so bummed when they closed it, and when the poker room went away, I was done with the place. It's sad because it is such a nice casino.

I loved Carnegie there. Won my first poker tournament ever there in 2008. $60 entry, 64 people, was stuck $1500 for trip and had just started playing poker.

Got drunk before the tourney (9a) and bought a stack of $1 chips and told the waitress to bring my crown and gingers and take a dollar off the stack.

20 drinks later I am shatteringly intoxicated and end up HU with the big stack. He makes a chopping hand gesture and says something I can’t understand. I don’t know what he’s talking about so I just ignore him.

Look down at A6 and he has a 4-1 chip advantage. We get it all in on A55 flop and he has AK. I spike the 6 on the river.

Now he has a 3-2 advantage. I look down at QQ and we get it in pre. He has Ax and I hold.

Last hand I look down at A4 and open jam. He calls with TT. I flop an ace.

Won $1600ish. Tipped the dealer $400 because alcohol. They made an announcement that I had won, had a little rail there with some friends celebrating, it was great.

Went to the bathroom, threw up, called my wife and drunkenly yelled “we did it honey”. She told me the next day that I provided no context whatsoever, just kept repeatedly yelling “we did it”. So the call the next day was interesting.

I’ll miss the Mirage. Great place all around.

I found it to be the least smoke-filled casino on the strip.

im on it.
You were definitely in my thoughts when I made that post.

I have not done this or seen it done for several years, but I still have about a rack out of 4 that I bought right after westward ho closed. There was some guy on e-bay that had bought a few dozen racks selling them for about $125/rack. He had done exactly what we are talking about with the Mirage.

Great story. This is what I’m picturing…

Imagine that, but I’m in the bathroom trying to not pee on the wall with one hand and yelling drunkenly into the phone on the other.

And there wasn’t anyone else there.

Or, come to think of it, maybe there was. How the hell would I have known, lol?

The Mirage was great.

It's my understanding that they will not be tearing it down though. The Volcano will go (but really, who really spent much time looking at it), and the Guitar will be a new tower built it it's place.

MGM properties really isn't the best thing going in LV - and neither is Caesars. The two companies have basically held a duopoly on the south and center strip for 20 years and nothing though there has improved in that time.

With any luck, Hard Rock will bring some competition to the area.

Volcano is being torn down and the hotel section of the existing Mirage to be gutted and completely redone. part of resort to be torn down to make way for the Guitar.

It is far more than a rebranding of an existing resort/casino

Totally sucks. I despise that giant guitar.
